MtGox - possible explanations

This story makes more sense to me than any hack (nobody can be that stupid). Your take?

They were seized due to "suspicion" of money laundering.
At Mt Gox, your Bitcoins were pooled and your coins were mixed with those of Ross Ulbricht and Trendon Shavers and Charlie Shrem, all of whom are under criminal investigation. In a normal bank, those particular accounts would simply be frozen, but at MtGox there was no clean way to separate "dirty" and "clean" coins. Evidence such as USB-sticks, paper wallets, disk drives were seized, forcing MtGox out of business, without being able to properly explain why. The funds remain inaccessible, but not permanently lost. Since these and other criminal investigations are ongoing, the involved law enforcement agencies remain mute on the subject.
If Mark Karpeles was suspected of cooking the books, or theft or embezzlement of HALF A BILLION DOLLARS,
he would be in police custody from day one, and held in remand today, awaiting his trial.
And that explains how Gox 'lost' 650,000 BTC.

Although, the stealth USG scenario seems equally unlikely. I've seen other sting operations by governments in the space though, which have gone un-reported. Did some investigate the matter more closely?
