Decentralized Forum
« on: July 17, 2014, 03:49:48 pm »

I see that moderators on this forum r not very consistent in their judgements. Sometimes their decisions r "balanced" not well enough. It's not the 1st time when I'm upset by deeds of the moderators. I think it's human factor, we r not perfect and some bias is always exists in what we do. Maybe it's even me who is wrong...

...Anyway, I'm going to write a decentralized forum software and move to it. It will "eat" a piece of my time that is being spent on Nxt core development now, so some new features will be added a little bit later. I'd like to remind that we need more core devs, DevFund has some money for bounties, the community should spend more resources on the search of new devs.

It's not related to Nxt. It will use Hashcash (PoW) to fight spam and "ignore" function to block propagation of bad content.

You really think Nxt needs another split right now?

Why split? And what was the 1st one?

You'll be splitting Nxt across forums if you create another one, no? Do you mean to communicate about Nxt on the new forum?

You're disregarding the work done in private and in the moderation board. There might be information you don't have.

That said, if the community is not pleased with the work I particularly do as an admin or moderator, I have no problems leaving the role to someone else. No drama intended at all, I might as well invest the little time I have in other activities within the community.

The problem is not u, I'm just a prisoner of my promise. I promised to move to a decentralized forum if I see the 3rd time moderators do something wrong (from my point of view). So u contributed only 33% and u shouldn't resign only coz one member of the community is not happy with something. U can't please everyone.

Yes, precisely.

Trying to find balance often lands you in no man's land. There's always someone upset. Because you're too harsh, or because you're too soft. And since a lot (more, actually) happens behind the scenes, the picture is always partial.

If you manage to pull off a code that can moderate automatically a community like this and be at least as efficient (including personal liaison) I'll be the first to give a standing ovation in relief, and I'm sure other staff members would join me.

Do we have a job ad text somewhere I can post?

Yes, we do - but it's largely unused by the community as of now.

I can't see a forum without mods working very well. All it takes is a very determined trolls and suddenly the whole forum is unusable. Early internet forums tended to not have much modding, but due to lessons learned, everyone has moved away from that model.

Forums already have an ignore button, so that's not going to solve the problems.

I think the mods here do a great job.

Ignore button here works only for u. On a decentralized forum if will work for everyone if a certain threshold is achieved.

I would like to suggest a feature.  I figure this is obvious, but just in case....

Forums should be encrypted on the blockchain by default.  There should be a minimum of two public keys for a set of forums.  One key will allow one to read.  The second would allow one to post.

I'm afraid this is not possible for a decentralized forum.

So, basically, no one will see the posts of people whose karma to smite ratio gets too bad.

I don't believe this is true.  A post is just a delta in the blockchain.

Think of it this way by analogy: when sending NXT from your account, a transaction must be validated.  If you don't have enough funds, for example, you cannot send.  That is, a miner/forger won't include your transaction.  In a decentralized forum, a miner/forger won't include your post if it is not signed with the forum's post key.

Only some of their messages won't be seen.
