Public Nodes / VPSs / Decentralizing network over countries
« on: November 12, 2014, 09:01:53 am »
Just wanted to raise awareness, it's not a good idea to rent most of the VPS in US, here is a useful link that lists VPS hosts all over the world:

https://www.exoticvps.com/

peerexplorer.com shows which countries have very few or zero NXT nodes.

Nxt Asset Exchange / List of possible ways to use tokens
« on: September 03, 2014, 05:12:47 pm »
As a currency

What is the advantage of creating tokens?
Tokens operate as a meta layer above the existing dogecoin blockchain. This means that anyone can create a new currency very inexpensively without needing to create their own network of miners.

A new currency could be...

something that appeals to an existing group or fills a specific niche
used as a risk free educational tool for new users
    a collectible
a replacement for pre-paid cards and gift cards
a form of digital souvenir (ie. a coin that you can only get from landmarks or geocach locations)
    an in game currency
a decentralized fantasy sports draft budget
a decentralized way to allocate attributes or stats points in a Role Playing Game
a receipt or proof of purchase

As a token of ownership

Why is using tokens better than what we have now?
Because it allows users to trade or sell shares without your involvement. It also keeps track of shares without depending on a centralized database or additional verification. Could be audited by the public.

    As a software license.
Used in place of stock certificates
Used to claim weekly share of CSA (Community Supported Agriculture)
As a way to distribute ASIC shares (expensive mining hardware)
Used to distribute timeshares on vacation/holiday homes
Used to access rental cars or other vehicles
As a way to subdivide shares of ownership; as in a share of a share.
As a way to fairly distribute use of laundry facilities in an apartment building
As a way to dole out cell phone minutes/data

As a ticket or access pass

Why is this better than what we have now?

Because it is cheaper and easier than using a ticket service or making your own paper tickets. It can also be sent digitally anywhere with internet access.

Used get into a party, concert, amusement park, ect...
    Automated road and bridge tolls
Used to get past a pay wall, such as those often used on news sites. (ie have three free tokens to read our stories. Additional tokens can be purchased, bulk discounts available.)
Used to enter a raffle, sweepstakes, or lottery
Used to access Recording Studio time
Used to participate in an event like a yacht trip
Used to access an online game
    Used to access a webcam
Used to access a wifi hotspot
Used to open a locker or storage unit
Used as a factor is 2 factor authentication
    Used to access online storage
Used to join a web service
Used as a form of identification?
The key to open an encrypted message?
Used to access single servings of a TV broadcast, like payper view. MMA and other sporting events, maybe be able to buy access to a single show or movie without a full subscription to say... Game of Thrones (hint hint)
To activate an app (ie. bartender can give you a token that validates the remote control app on your phone for the TV in the bar)
Used to board a train, bus, airplane, or boat
Used to board a rocket to the moon. ;)

Customizable memberships or subscriptions

    pay per use exercise equipment
Issue tokens with membership purchase and put a token cost on each option that your service offers
Allow users to customize timing of services

Crowd funding

Real world example of a farm raising money by selling tokens

    Issue tokens for donations
    Redeem tokens for rewards
Use tokens as a way to verify refunds in crypto if needed
Presell music, movies and other art

As a rewards program

Issue tokens as rewards points for purchases
Offer cool things or discounts in exchange for getting the tokens back
Offer rewards for advertising; time spent in a store, proximity to ads, views, ect...
Offer rewards to customers for being inconvenienced, waiting in line, giving out info, ect...
    Free drink tokens
Replace those tickets at the arcade
    Family chore chart app
    School incentive program
    As a digital trophy
A reward for participating in a network, like torrent

Peer to Peer Betting

I don't really understand this one, but I hear it is possible.

Financial Instruments

    Bond issuance
Derivatives? Credit Default Swaps? It all sounds like betting to me :p

As a Tool for Developers

Used to track resources without the need for a centralized database
Used as a state of being for a larger system. ONNN, OFFF, COMPLETE, ERROR, SENT, START, STOP, RETURN
    As login credentials

As a system of voting

Distribute 1 token to every eligible voter or only accept 1 token from each valid address
Setup an address for each option, and the address that receives the most tokens wins
Figure out how to prevent selling of token votes
Figure out how to keep it anonymous (if needed)

Group Activities

Used to facilitate active participation online, as in the example of a democratically played game of pokemon on Twitch TV.

Nxt General Discussion / NXT vs Bitshares/Ethereum partnership
« on: August 16, 2014, 02:24:00 am »
Bitshares and Ethereum are banding together, Vitalik thinks DPOS is the future (this is going to undermine beliefs of some in PoW world).

Source: https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php?topic=6990

Does it mean both Vitalik and Dan are so afraid of NXT that they have to join efforts now? ;)

Infrastructure Fund Committee / Supporting NSC with InfFund
« on: July 20, 2014, 03:14:12 pm »
I propose InfFund create a large buy order for NSC asset.

100 000 x 1 NXT would be a reasonable price that wouldn't hurt InfFund balance and would last a few months, giving more boost to decentralization of the network. Buy orders are drying up, someone has to step in, InfFund seems like that's what it was designed for. Thoughts?

Nxt General Discussion / private pool
« on: July 16, 2014, 08:11:48 pm »
If any stakeholders with substantial stakes (1M+) don't forge on their own and are willing to lease their coins to a small private pool to help strengthen the network and make their coins do useful work, please pm me. All forging and NSC proceeds will be paid out to lessors on a weekly basis.

Nxt General Discussion / exchanges, volatility and risks
« on: July 08, 2014, 08:13:20 pm »
The more you keep your NXTs at exchanges and don't withdraw, the more chance exchanges can use your NXTs to create fake volumes, effectively trading against you. They know they can be sure that a certain number of users don't withdraw and they can do with those funds whatever they like. They can dump large amounts of NXTs and then buy them back at depressed prices, because people panic and sell into dumps.

Now, I don't claim certain exchanges do that, but with large enough reserves it's more than possible. Don't keep your NXTs at exchanges, withdraw, this will ensure less gut-wrenching volatility and more stable price growth. Exchanges will know that they have to meet their obligations and will be less inclined to act as fractional reserve banks.

Besides, your funds are at risk when you rely on third-party to keep your funds. Crypto currencies were designed such that people can act as their own bank. Well then, be your own bank, what are you waiting for?!

Public Nodes / VPSs / Public nodes + DNS = possible security issue
« on: June 20, 2014, 03:00:26 pm »
If DNS server is taken down (we don't discuss here why or by whom), then public nodes that are visible as hostnames, not IPs, become inaccessible. Perhaps it's a good idea to address this attack vector by setting up public nodes as simply IPs, that's minus one weak link in the chain of connectivity.

Nxt General Discussion / Betting with NXT

How can decentralized betting be coded into NXT? Here is a link to Counterparty and xbet.io doing this. That should add more users to NXT.
