I'm seeing some really great guesses as well as some really great ideas in this thread. I've been working on a small technical document which lays out what ATOMIC is, why we need it and how the community is going to help which you should start seeing bits and pieces of very soon. As far as the buy orders go, I imagine that once those initial orders are filled the price wont be going back down anytime soon.

Edit: Looks like you can buy some ATOMIC shares starting at 800 NXT each right now!

I think it is safe to say that 1000 NXT is on the high side regardless of what ATOMIC is.

Please calm. In less than a day I will post a high level summary.

I think Thomas Veil was closest to guessing what Atomic is. Unless anybody objects to this, I will award him the 777 Atomic assets

Ok, so I guess (just to take a shot at the 777 atomic ) it doesn't solve volatility or has anything to do with fiat.
As it is supposed to solve something, maybe it's volume/liquidity: By creating a merged currency, that is automatically several in one.
Bigger trades would be possible and entering/leaving easier. Note that mining still works... though also not directly.

For others, the collection of info we have - so they have it easier to make good guesses:
Atomic solves "one thing in particular" that's "preventing crypto-currency from becoming the standard form of exchange"

 -volatility
 -missing market cap for big trades
 -entering/exiting via fiat
  -- registering at an exchange
  -- getting fiat in
