Dividends+ Release
« on: July 31, 2014, 11:01:37 am »

Latest Update: Dividends has been integrated into the latest superNET release. So the best way to keep up to date is to download the latest software from multigateway.org or from supernet.org or from https://nxtforum.org/lite-multigateway-releases/

Latest Update: Dividends has been integrated into the latest MGW release. So the best way to keep up to date is to download the latest software from multigateway.org

Note: When doing dividend payments, make sure to copy the log (from both stages) into a text editor/excel sheet to review. If you see any problems, send me the log. Thanks.
Release version 1.1: https://www.dropbox.com/s/pfkeq7af9c8taby/ui_v11.rar (depreciated, see above)

Recommended to use the standard NRS client (1-click installer not yet supported)
Instructions: Merge the ui directory with the one from the client download (this only ends up replacing index.html and adding one javascript file.)
Note to MGW users: Unfortunately this and MGW won't work at the same time. You have to use a different directory or swap in or out Longzai's index.html with this index.html.

If you have installed correctly, you should see NxtServices>Dividends+ in the side menu. Clicking on this gives the options of Dividends or Automatic Asset Distribution. Both are a two step process. Click on calculate and the results box will outline what the plugin intends to do (Password not needed for this section, you don't even have to own the assets). Click on Activate to send out the Nxt or Assets. Record the results of the calculate stage, because the results aren't always reported for the activate stage.

The dividend calculation can take 10/15mins for assets with lots of assetholders.

Before actually sending dividends, check that the output from the calculation is correct. For sending, you could first try it out on less serious assets (I bought a few fake litecoin assets (9545582885005657403) and used those to test it.)

Please post bugs in this thread as well as successful dividend payments.

ToDo list:
1. Allow dividend payments in assets.
2. Implement timestamp feature.
3. Try and speed up dividend calculation.
4. Improve result reporting. (At the moment, final report is only a list of TXs; should report Nxt rather than quant)
5. Include loading bar for dividend calculation.
6. Include option to allow some accounts to be excluded from dividend payments.
7. For Automatic Asset Distribution, include option to pay out Nxt, and allow paying out of variable amounts.
8. Test and get working well on 1-click installer.

Note: This new release doesn't use any 3rd party software just interfaces with the core (It doesn't use the old NxtServices dividend script).

Thanks to Coinomat for doing some testing, I've caught a few bugs and made a new release. Version 0.3 is now in the OP.

This script was just used to make its first dividend payments. (A whopping 50K Nxt for MPFiatGate.) So it now seems to be working well.

Is there an API way to interact with this via curl?
I would like to use it to just calculate the shareholders at a given block height
or possibly input the total amount of dividend, the asset number, and the block height and have it return a json array of the shareholder's NXT account numbers, the amount of dividend each should be sent...

There's no API interface. However, the second part is possible.

This is a 2 stage process. After the first part (Press Calculate), you'll get an output that looks like:
amount1,NXT_account_number1,asset1
amount2,NXT_account_number2,asset2

You can copy that information and paste it into an excel sheet or text file. That would allow your third party program to pay out the dividends.

I am looking for a way to do this programatically, so that i can integrate the dividend calculations right into the hashrate.org pool code.
I guess I'll have to tear apart the actual javascript and try and write the same sort of functionality in node.js tomorrow

Ok, well I guess once dividend functionality comes out in the core, there'll be an API then but not sure when that's expected.

James has written dividend functionality in C, and there is an API to that. You'll need to be running the NxtServices module (which takes about half an hour to load up). M09 is the latest version of NxtServices, not sure where the latest thread on that is since not many people are using it now.

do you happen to have a download link that works, for that nxtservices module? for linux -  I saw a mac and a windows downloads, but I didn't see anything about linux.

http://209.126.70.170/NXTservices_M09_unix (Thanks to VanBreuk for finding it for me.) Once NxtServices is running, do to localhost:7777 and you should be able to see the API calls.

Thanks for developing this module.
My experience of using this module to distribute my asset was not very pleasing.
First try was 250 addresses in one go only 59 got shares.
You can see the log of using this application at the nxtblocks.info at the asset's address NXT-2J43-PSJT-QTFF-HWHDV starting at 2014-08-02 15:35:24 and ending at 2014-08-02 19:07:08
Generally if you go for 10 or more addresses at one go something brakes.
I admin I did 30 in one go and 20 instantly but I could not repeat it.
I think you should add a bigger delay between sending each transaction.

Best Regards.

Thanks for using it and letting me know. I've just made an update which slows down the sending out of transactions. Better to be slow and make sure they all do through.

All: Make sure to update to version 0.4 is you are distributing to more than a handful assetholders.

any chance there's an updated version of NXTServices?
also, is the source for NXTServices available anywhere? it must have a GLICC dependency >2.13?

I just get
./NXTservices_M09_unix: /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.15' not found (required by ./NXTservices_M09_unix)

You did it.
I sent shares to 520 address in one go. It works, but it locks the ui for the time it takes to send the shares.

If you know it you don't bother. But if you are doing it for the first time you might think something is not right because the interface doesn't respont to anything. It also pops a message saying that the application is not responding suggesting that something is wrong while it is still working.

Thanks anyway.
You saved me from alot of coping and pasting.

I made a new release and updated the OP.

Version 5 has the ability to choose the timestamp for dividend calculation and the ability to pay in assets.

Greetings Valarmg

I used your dividend plugin last week and liked it very much  :D

Since I have updated the nXt client on my mac to version 1.2.4 and I am unable to use the client.

Can you please confirm if your plugin is working properly with the new client!

Thanks

No, it shouldn't be used with the new client. I'm planning an updated version later today on 1.1.6, then I'll port to 1.2.3 (hopefully also today).

New release for NRS v1.2.5

Note: When doing dividend payments, make sure to copy the log (from both stages) into a text editor/excel sheet to review. If you see any problems, send me the log. Thanks.
Release version 1.0: https://www.dropbox.com/s/9gogqq2jtmtex9i/ui_v10.rar

Improvements:
1) Allows control of accounts to avoid paying dividends to (Can pay to issuers, can avoid paying to liquidity bot, secondard issuer...)
2) Advanced features disabled by default
3) Improved reporting, doesn't use quant anymore. Now the assetholders are ordered, so you can use nxtblocks.info/#section/assets_exchange/stakeholders/ASSETNUMBER or nxtreporting to check assetholders (if done at present timestamp.
4) Better error handling and more robustness.

Bad news, I found a small bug (sending only works when you store password on login). New release: https://www.dropbox.com/s/pfkeq7af9c8taby/ui_v11.rar

Good news is that I did two dividend payments, including one with 196 assetholders and seemed to work fine. Slow, but fine.

Note that progress percentage may not always go upward, sometimes repeats, but at least it shows you something is happening.

Hi,

Thanks for your good job,

Do I need to NXT Services separately?

If so please mention it in first post!

Doesn't need NxtServices.

Mentioned at the very bottom of the first post:

Note: This new release doesn't use any 3rd party software just interfaces with the core (It doesn't use the old NxtServices dividend script).

Yes. It should overwrite the index.html and index.html.gz in that directory, and add two files to the nxt/html/ui/js directory. It isn't tested for the oneclick installer, just for the NRS core release.

Do you see NxtServices in the sidemenu?

The only problem I found is that I'm using NRS 1.2.6 now and it seems that it's not integrated with it yet.

That is super weird. Someone else had the same problem today, so I downloaded a new version of the NRScore, downloaded my files from the link, and I had no problems. (On version 1.2.6).

There's very little that can go wrong. Could you open the index.html in a text editor and do a search for the string "Dividends+"? If the index.html has been correctly overwritten there should be several references to it. You could also try deleting the index.html.gz file to see if that helps.

Ok. Try this. Rename index.html to something else. If you can still access localhost:7876 then it means that you are accessing a different index.html.

Then it would be a matter of figuring out which index.html you are accessing and why.

I have done some dividend payments today with NRS1.2.6 The only problem I saw was that the progress % wasn't updating. However, everything worked fine, just had to leave wallet in background and wait for calculations/payouts to finish.

Apparently there are problems with Chrome display of Dividends+. I don't see the issue, so it's hard to debug but I'll look into it.

Hi,

With NRS 1.2.5 when your version of the dividend plugin was released, everything worked blazing fast. I tried a few times today but even after waiting for more than 10 minutes could not complete the dividend calculations. When you get time, will it be possible to update your version also.

I will add a bounty of 100 NXT.

I had send manual dividends for 5 weeks, without much complains but after using your tool 2 weeks I am spoiled and doing the manual dividends today I found it very cumbersome ;D

What exactly are you seeing? Coinomat reported slow calculations as well but eventually it worked. I am using NRS1.2.6 and Dividends1.1 and it calulated the dividends for asset 2504568464748765731 in about a minute.

Thanks, appreciated.

Good news is that now the Dividends functionality is integrated into the MGW release. So the best way to keep up to date is to download from multigateway.org.

Nxt Services Plugin BETA v1.4.5 + Nxt Client 1.2.7 from multigateway.org has version 1.1 of Dividends included.

Worked well with the new release on the MGW install for Mac.

When I calculated payouts everything worked fine. Then when I went to execute the payouts I got a couple that returned a time-out error. I then verified them manually and it seemed that the payment was still processed. So other than that everything worked great and saved me a lot of time.

Thanks valarmg for all your hard work :)

Is there any way that this could be modified slightly so we could interact with it via API call?
I just want a way to have it return JSON that tells me the asset holders at a particular block height - I don't care about it even being able to distribute the NXT.
I will make a 1000 NXT bounty to get things started off.

Latest dividend release uses the 1.3NRS improvement to make the dividend calculation almost instant if the timestamp is within 1400 blocks. If you go back in time more than that, then the old way is done which can take 20mins-ish, depending on the asset.

Also, a message is sent along with the dividend specifying the asset doing the dividend.

Finally it went through,  ;D
Leaving the post, apparently sometimes it can take 30 minutes for confirmations.

I am seeing a strange behaviour.
I have distributed 54000 NXT dividend to ltc2nXt asset holders, the NXT amount has been deducted from my account but none of the transactions have confirmed after 30 minutes

Yeah, that's nothing to do with the dividends module, occasionally Nxt can have super long blocks. There is a known fix for this, hopefully devs will implement it before too long.

It is an characteristic of the current retargeting algo, full implentation of Transparent Forging is the fix.

Mthcl and Sebastian256 did some excellent technical maths and suggested an improvement but it was decided to wait for TF.

Well that's been reopened a bit since then by kushti doing more work on the algorithm. https://nxtforum.org/general/nxt-forging-algorithm-simulating-approach/

No conclusion from the thread, but it's no longer clear that just waiting for TF to magically fix everything is the best option.

valarmg,

Thanks for your efforts,
I want to send a message to all my asset holders.
We can either edit the default message sent in Dividedns+ and send a minimum dividend to them, or initiate a new thread for just sending a message to all asset holders.

Please let me know what is your opinion. we have discussed this with james also in slack/supernet-faq and you can join there.

Thanks

I have thought about this, and it's a relatively easy add-on to Dividends+. However, it'll probably take a day or two, and there hasn't been much interest indicated, so I haven't coded it up.

I'm on holidays for the next week, so I can't work on it now. When I get back from Christmas holidays I'll look into adding the feature.

Question on the Multigateway version... does it only cost 1 NXT per dividend disbursement (regardless of the number of holders), or 1 NXT per holder account? Thanks!

haha, not many here because of the holidays, so its me again :)

the dividends are distributed as regular nxt payments, so it is 1 nxt per person sent to, its daily expensive if your sending to a large amount of people.

Once again appreciate the help. I suspected as much, so weekly div's would probably be more practical. Still awesome that the Multigateway can accommodate!

After successfully installing the plugin, I click on Services / Dividends+ / Automatic Asset Distribution. Then I click the Calculate Distribution button after filling in the salient details. I then see the calculation details show up in the appropriate field, with the "Calculation Succeeded" message.

However, when I click the Activate Distribution button, I get a "Password not specified" error.

Strangely, I see nowhere to enter one. Any ideas on how to get this function properly working? So far, my experience with the NXT wallet client has been extremely trying... not nooB friendly.

Anyhow, many thanks in advance for any ideas how to get this working!

Do you see a Secret Phrase box? This is where you put your password.

There are two 'modes' in terms of passwords. One is that the password box is ticked on the opening screen. When it's ticked, then the password is saved internally, and doesn't need to be specified again, so no password box is displayed. The second is when the box isn't ticked, in this case a box is displayed called Secret Phrase. The secret phrase/password isn't required for calculation, just for activation.

So going on the info you provided (after upgrading to 1.4.6), I completely cleared my entire browser history and proceeded to log in with the box unticked. Then I went to Services and proceeded to transfer some assets... Voila! Worked like a champ. Not quite sure what went wrong prior, but I'll definitely have to check it out again, except with the box ticked and see if it still processes.

Thanks!

Sorry, you are right, there's a bug in asset distribution when password box is ticked. I'll fix. (Hopefully be fixed for new release of SuperNET from MGW)

Note that asset distribution (and other dividends+ modules) have not been tested for version 1.4.6. yet, but seems to be working for you, so great.

All I know, is that your Kickass plugin made sense out of an otherwise high-tech quagmire. Keep up the good work, as I continue to diligently test under 1.4.6 (ans thank you, once again)!

Can be done with Dividends+ plugin as well. Just use the Asset Distribution module.

Can a message be sent in this manner without actually assigning any assets (i.e. asset amount = 0)? If so, that is simply brilliant!

I have downloaded and installed SuperNET v1.4.7.1 it seems very good that messaging is embed in both dividends and asset dist and you can message them simply now!

It's a very interesting feature you created valarmg.

I have downloaded and installed SuperNET v1.4.7.1 it seems very good that messaging is embed in both dividends and asset dist and you can message them simply now!

It's a very interesting feature you created valarmg.

Some taNXT on your way man!

Thanks, glad you like it.

@valarmg: Is it feasible to create a patch that will enable both the NXT Services / Dividends+ tab and the Monetary System tab to show up simultaneously? Here's the issue I am experiencing, from a previous post:

OK, I think I figured out the anomaly ... I did finally get it to show up after (yet another) fresh install. However, where the prob occurs, is when attaining to add the Dividends+ plugin. In other words, if I do a fresh 1.4.7.1 download, transport the db file over, and reload the localhost page... the Monetary System tab shows up.

However, upon installing the Dividends+ plugin, the Monetary System tab disappears and the Services tab shows up.

Sadly, both cannot coexist at this exact juncture.

Many thabks in advance!

We need Longzai to update his latest SuperNET based on JeanLuc's newest update.

So do you anticipate this to be days, weeks or ...? Ironically just prior to posting this, I was already going back to SuperNET. Does the most current SuperNET version accommodate both Dividends+ and Monetary System? (my main reason for switching over)

Accommodating both isn't a problem. It's just that this is built on top of the Nxt version with a bug. Just need to update to the latest version of Nxt and re-release. I'll PM Longzai and I'm sure it'll happen when he's next online and has an hour.

valarmg, if you could change the default date for dividends to pay as today it will be great!

And the default time as 12:00

I need to update day, month and year everytime! but if it was today, I may need to update just day.

Thanks

Why not leave it blank, so as to pay out immediately? I had a day and time in there to make it easier to modify, but I kept deleting it whenever I used the function, so thought it easier to leave it blank, since that will be what most users will end up doing.

Also, do you realize that dividends are now available in the core, and that you can do all the transactions for a single Nxt now using that function?

Because I want to pay dividends to my asset holders on 12:00 gmt on every Monday.

I read that core will support it but did not pay attention that it's out. Where is it?

Ok, well for me it was handier having no date, than having today's date, I'll wait for feedback from other users before changing.

Core dividends is available but I haven't used it, or seen it in the UI. Can only be used if you are the issuer of the asset, I believe, so maybe that's why I haven't seen it.

If I am to understand you correctly, it no longer costs 1 NXT per dividend account, but rather 1 NXT grand total (regardless of number of holders)? If so, that is batshit crazy awesome. And thanks for the update btw!

Also, if the default is blank and left as such, payouts occur immediately? Double batshit crazy awesome, if so.

Dividends via the core has just been introduced for version 1.4, not sure it's used much yet, and I haven't. Should be 1NXT for whole transaction, however, I believe that those receiving might not easily realize it. You don't use Dividends+ module, instead, I'm not sure, it's somewhere in the UI.

In Dividends+, if the time and date is not specified, then dividends are processed based on present time.

I just went poking around in the SuperNET ui, and the only obvious option is Dividends+ for distribution (i.e. 1 NXT per asset holder +1 NXT for the transaction). Is it an API call, perhaps, that allows for a 1 NXT dividend distribution? (I'm code-illiterate, so I really don't know much about these things)

Also forgot to mention that I installed the Dividends+ plugin with the standard NXT client and it still blots out the Monetary System tab.

For purposes of accurately reporting on the plugin, is it safe to say that a standard NXT client user can only have one function or the other (aside from SuperNET)?

The dividends plugin listed here is an old version that isn't supported any more. The official dividends+ plugin is now part of the superNET plugin, as here: https://nxtforum.org/lite-multigateway-releases/supernet-v1-4-7-2

Just copy the ui files from that download on top of Nxt and you'll have MS, and when you click on the superNET sidebar, you'll see dividends+.

Okay, I issued an asset in testnet to look at core dividends.

Guide:
1. Click on an asset that you issued. (You don't see this functionality unless you issued the asset from the account you are signed in for. You can only issue dividends for an asset you own.)
2. Under the asset description and above "Buy ASSET with NXT", you'll see a Pay Dividends link
3. Allows you to specify a certain amount of Nxt per asset, and a recent block height. (If you specify 0.1 and a person holds 1000 assets, they will receive 100NXT)
4. Click on Pay Dividends and you'll see a message such as "A total of 300 NXT will be distributed among 2 accounts which own a total of 3'000 shares". Click Pay Dividends again to proceed, or Cancel to cancel.
5. As issuer, you will see a dividend transaction in your list of transactions and amount dividended is subtracted from your Nxt. Fee for the whole transaction is only 1NXT regardless of number of shareholders.
6. Dividend receivers will have correct amount of Nxt added to their balance but will not see any transaction. Receivers can be made aware of their dividend by a)knowing their previous balance and seeing that it has changed or b)looking up the dividend transaction in a block explorer.
7. This functionality can't dividend out assets, only Nxt.

So, how to do accounting of dividends paying assets if there will be no separate notification, no transaction, no message that dividends ere received? Or do I miss something?

There's a dividend transaction. By tracking those, you'll be able to see how many dividends the asset paid out.

Hopefully block explorers start making those easy to scan through those for each asset.

That is really tight, and as you pointed out, definitely not obvious. Thanks for the tutorial!

[Edit] It occurred to me that the standard Dividends+ feature is still useful if you wish to include an AM to each holder; whereas the link manner of dividend distribution appears only to allow a "note to self". Options are always a good thing.

I can see that API is available. http://wiki.nxtcrypto.org/wiki/Nxt_API#Dividend_Payment

Didn't issued any asset, can't be sure.

EDIT: I guess, one could also use/fill form here: http://localhost:7876/test?requestTypes=dividendPayment

This is big. It threw me for a loop and I came here to check it out. There must be a way for the client to check that he has received this, no?

Edit: Hmm I'm very disturbed by this. I can't find a record, anywhere, of who has been paid in this type of transaction. And the fact that it does not show up at all in the client is very disturbing, because I cannot identify the source of a payment. I assume this will be fixed in an upcoming release?

Well it's not straightforward to include information about it (as I understand it) but I think there was talk of adding some kind of notification system to an account which would include core dividend information. You'll have to ask the core devs for more info. Seems that a lot of people are still using Dividends+ despite the extra fees, and this is probably a big reason for that.

You can find information about who has been paid by looking up dividend transactions (not sure if block explorers have included that yet or if a manual search is needed). Matching the dividend transaction to the asset distribution at that point in time will reveal exactly how much everyone got paid.

It doesn't work for me, whenever I try to calculate the dividends it shows this error:

"Asset ID is invalid."

Even though i triple checked the asset ID and the amount was ok it always shows me this error. In fact it shows it for all assets, not just 1. I correctly copied the asset ID without spaces, so I think its a major bug.

I didn't had the ADVANCED checkbox checked in.

I searched quickly through the files and I found the error notice in this file:
....\supernet-lite-2.0.5-beta\ui\js\nsv.dividends.js

So Please fix it :)

I haven't seen this problem, but someone else did and they used incognito mode and it worked. Maybe change browser or use incognito mode and see if there is still a problem.

Maybe an issue with a Privacy-/PopupBlock-/AddBlock-Extension in the browser. Chrome disables these extensions in incognito mode by default.

I have taken over this part of the supernet lite client development. I have neither changed nor had a look at dividends. I will have a look at this

Yep, I had a look at it but could not yet fix it. I will focus on this tool now and include it asap into 2.0.8 release which is close.
