Completely revamped Nxt Whitepaper draft
« on: July 05, 2014, 08:07:46 am »

I have what I hope is a pleasant surprise for the community.

After picking away slowly at what was already written, adding new content, and editing existing content, I am pleased to present a complete, ready-for-review draft of an official,release-candidate Nxt Whitepaper based on v1.2.0 features and implementations.

It is on Google Drive now and is ready for comment (Google Drive features a "comments" and "suggestions" feature which anyone can use to provide feedback on the document) at this link:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1BWVPUsyS6G4gIyPXNO_XFoszhzP6jJRGe8t--RtpMkY

So that I'm clear about my goal and intentions here, let me make a few statements about my methodology:
  • The old draft is conspicuously-focused on using Bitcoin as a baseline for defining Nxt.  I have steered away from that motivation as much as possible.  There was a great deal of "Bitcoin problems vs Nxt solutions" content that was excellent, though, so I moved it all into an appendix
  • Another issue with the whitepaper is that I believe it has to settle on a moment in time.  Since new features are always being added, transparent forging is still being worked out and implemented, etc., we run the risk of never finishing a whitepaper at all.  As a result, I have based this draft on the features and implementations of the upcoming v1.2.0 release, and have avoided outlining "planned" features wherever possible.  I have suggested that this version of the whitepaper is tied to a specific Nxt version, and therefore it will be updated, amended, or supplemented in the future.
  • I have restructured the entire document in a way that I believe aligns logically: Abstract, Intro/Overview, then Core Technologies, then Core Features, then Concerns, then the Bitcoin Appendix.  I have kept feature details light, but have attempted to reference implementation examples wherever possible (I'm sure more can be added)
  • I have tried to provide as much technical detail as possible without getting into the weeds.  I hope I've arrived at a document that is technical enough to adequately explain how Nxt is built and how it works without devolving into proofs and formulas (I've simply referenced those where possible).
  • Unlike some other "whitepapers", which read more like blog posts, I wanted this document to be comprehensive.  Formatted as-is, with current content and references, I've filled 20 pages.

Finally: while this has been a great deal of work over many evenings, I have preserved as much draft content as I possibly could.  The "author" is listed as "the Nxt community", and in the footnote attached to that statement I've attached as many names as I could find.  I would be proud to atach my full, legal name in connection to this document, but I do not want to steal credit from where it is due.  In the spirit of decentralization, I believe this is a sound approach and I hope you'll be kind about omissions I may have made.

Please, PLEASE, please review and comment on this document.  Let's get this thing finished and published all over hell by the end of July at the very latest.

I have reviewed and processed all of the edits and suggestions made so far, and added comments for myself on things I don't have time to do at the moment.

Thanks to everyone (QBTC, Brangdon, Sebastien256, and several others) who have been looking at the paper so far!

I am not sure why my name is listed when I had nothing to do with this document or (as far as I can tell) any of the content in it.

I found your name listed as a contributor elsewhere in the forums, so I added it. I can remove it, unless of course you'd like to provide input :)

I think that my name is probably not of any benefit (considering the recent *issues* to do with the AT project) so I think it would be best just to remove it.

Parentheses are me explaining my reasoning behind my suggested changes. Not to be included in a final draft. :P

Feedback received   ;D

I can correct section 2.5.1 if I get accurate information supplied.  The info there now is from a very old BCT post (January/February?) by CfB.

what and where is the last version of the whitepaper?

https://www.dropbox.com/s/cbuwrorf672c0yy/NxtWhitepaper_v122_rev4.pdf

The Whitepaper PDF link given in the General Discussion subforum

Nxt Whitepaper
https://www.dropbox.com/s/cbuwrorf672c0yy/NxtWhitepaper_v122_rev4.pdf

is the same version, so this must still be the most recent authoritative version.

The Wiki version Whitepaper:Nxt was finalized on July 13, just a few days prior to this comment, so it is probably nearly the same or the same version. Version 1.2.2 of NRS is mentioned, but I could not find a revision number (rev4 in the PDF link).

I noticed that the Wiki whitepaper is not linked from the Wiki home page or any other page, so it is somewhat buried in the Wiki, yet it has close to 15,000 views. And the PDF link on the forum is also a bit hard to find.

I want to suggest a correction to the Whitepaper, and this raises the question of how, where and by whom such ongoing changes are made. Since the PDF can't easily be edited, perhaps ongoing changes should be made to the Wiki version and a new PDF published periodically. Perhaps proposed changes should first be discussed on the Wiki discussion (talk) page for the Whitepaper, and then included in the Whitepaper by a designated editor (JoeFox?) who would also create a new PDF periodically.

I have suggested a change on the Whitepaper Talk page, but I guess that no one will see it there since the previous entry was made in January.

Another approach would be to create a topic in the forum for proposed changes to the Whitepaper. Yet another approach would be to use bugtracker software (e.g. create a bitbucket account just for the Whitepaper). It is probably best to have just one such location for recording suggested changes.

I have all the raw text for the whitepaper in LaTeX and it can be updated any time. It's due for a revision, and probably should be brought in line for the 1.4.0 release.

The wiki location was where all the info for the whitepaper was originally put together, and it was initially set up to be a place to collaborate on it.

I'd suggest that edits can be made there; those can then be tidied up and used to create an updated whitepaper in LaTeX markup.

Is there any effort to maybe shorten this version to fire it up to wikipedia?
