NXT-friendly crypto news site
« on: June 18, 2014, 10:00:52 am »

Apenzl recently noted that the major crypto news sites seem to ignore NXT. It's like there's a conspiracy of silence. So there was a suggestion to start one of our own. The site would cover all the major cryptos to provide broad interest (and funding opportunities) but would give NXT due weight and could be used to showcase some of the cool stuff that's going on.

This thread is just to pull together some ideas, find out whether it's viable, and so on - Discovery Phase for Lean lovers. If it's got mileage, great. If not, also fine.

Nxtcoinmagazine.com and nxtcoinmagazine.org as well as nxtpresscenter.org are all available to develop as well. I cannot pull it all off myself either. We need some Nxt coordination.

We could start turning nxter.org into NXT coindesk. But I need help.
We could push our news + articles to global mainstream media, while making money. Well, that's just an idea.

Let's do it then. I have some things on my to-do list, then I can act on it.

drop the 'coin', just nxt.  much cleaner. lol  ;)

First person hired!  ;D

This is a great idea BUT I think we could do better...
What if it was a general crypto news site that simply gave due place to NXT? That way it doesn't look like an official NXT mouthpiece, and thereby ignored by people who don't want to know about NXT. There would be better funding options, too.
I don't know the state of the market and whether it's too saturated for anything new like this. Maybe there are other ways to add value. But I think a semi-autonomous but NXT-friendly venture has a better chance of engaging mainstream audiences than something focused on NXT - which is after all what we're already doing. It would have a far better chance of soliciting content from other crypto writers, too, if that became necessary.
Either way I'd be interested in participating. :)

Noted!  :)

And I tend to agree. We might even want to aim beyond the "crypto crowd".

Still on my "to-do's"...
But feel free to discuss: What would be your dream newssource / magazine / site. Or your GF's, because we want her too!  :)

Suggestions:
Lots of sites do daily news, often in the form of poorly-written articles. Let's aim for quality over quantity.
Major stories, clearly. Trends, new developments etc. But magazine-style rather than high-turnover news.
Market analysis of different crypto trends. Plenty of people could help there.
Humour. Where do you see that in crypto?

Definitely interested.
I was planning to get back to blogging, but just lack the time to do everything myself these days.
6 months ago with a small site seems so far away these days!

If there is room for articles focussing on more general topics often not touched upon in crypto like community building etc, I am definitely interested.  :)

I have zero overview of what exactly is done at the moment - but what about press releases?
Most news writers are lazy (+ simply get paid next to nothing), so they love copy paste. They might be hesitant to do it from blogs and such - but if there is a press release, they'll go for it.

So:
- Have press releases easily accessible and searchable place to keep them.
- Send them to the noteworthy pages on feature release (or other events).
- That means of course: prepare them before release of any feature for impact. For these pages a day old news is not news anymore.

I don't like to be a wet blanket, but... I hope this site will be neutral, not friendly. This is enough.

Rather frustratingly, people in Cryptoland seem to be rather intelligent. I suspect they would see through an advertorial site in a microsecond. So it would need to be genuinely neutral, yes.

As critical as content is a business model. I don't have a lot of experience there.

Hi again.

@Cassius: My day wasn't bad actually, and I work on bad days too. :) I meant bad timing for me (because I had other stuff to do).
And then I suddenly got caught up in some threads about psycho's and attacks...

Well, the thing is, that I've written down my vision for nxter.org, in order to present my idea of a 2. gen magazine to you. I never took the time to write it down before….. and now I can't stop! I want to get it out of my head. So I will probably hit you with a megapost bomb tomorrow. About the magazine idea we're discussing but also about some related possibilities. I hope you'll find it interesting, and that it will help to move us forwards. If not, at least clearing my head now will give me a better sleep tonight.  ;)

Brainstorming is still allowed!

I could help with editing and also authoring articles - especially articles on more general topics, as per Damelon's suggestion, so that the site is also providing valuable content for people who may be (currently at least) outside cryptocurrency altogether.

Awesome. I only have ideas, not a vision.
One of my thoughts was that some kind of feature would be useful to attract readers/users and distinguish it from the competition (other than the sheer quality and insight of its material) and provide revenue to make it viable from a business point of view. Affiliates/ads are ok, but there's no guarantee they'll do it alone.

Maybe someone could translate it too.

I think you are right. This will be necessary in order to get a decent ROI.

---

I'm working my way through old threads right now, to see if something was posted that still makes good sense.

Following quotes from the past still makes sense to me:

A mix of information on what has been achieved (this feeds the feeling NXT is moving forward) and if possible some human interest stories.

Also giving some of the regulars on the forums a "face" will help. Putting in some characterisation on well known people helps make NXT more "human".

Proposal:
We should establish an online "writers room", and have a weekly meeting. We could post possible headlines. Meet online, pick stories and delegate them. Based on interest and knowledge of the relevant issues. We will soon find out what kind of stories/articles fit who, and if we need more man/woman-power to the team.

The "writers room" is already established on nxter.org.
But a better way of organizing our work on the magazine / site could be this tool: https://podio.com. I have a friend who can help set it up for us.

Agree there are two main type of information we can provide:

1. collect and organize all current information as  brooklynbtc  described

2. more in-depth and new information such as: interviews, analysis etc.

We should set up a separate site which could have an independent life later on. No need to bloat the block-chain unnecessarily.

Just a little comment on Bitcoin. When introducing NXT to Average J, let's not forget, that the mainstream media didn't start covering Bitcoin massively before last year. Let's not assume that everybody has heard about it. To most people BTC is still just some "internet cash", possibly used for drugs, a commodity, something new and dangerous from the darknet and hard to get. Article writers and news hosts still need to explain ppl what bitcoin is, before the news come.

Adding to this: We'll soon have all the features of 1. gen. coins. After MS is implemented and put to use, we'll have coins built on top of Nxt to talk about, then there's not much need for BTC anymore? We can make reference to our forefather when necessary, and compare Nxt to other 2. gens, when necessary, but our main focus should IMO be on Nxt. I'm being bullish here, and everybody should of course feel free to disagree!

Especially a business / trading section/blogger could add value to the magazine by proving me wrong.  ;)

The thing is, Nxt is beginning to gain momentum. There's a huge interest in following Nxt news in the rest of the crypto world. They will come to us.

I'm at a café with bad internet connection  :(  Hope this post goes through...

I want you to know why I hope you will (and think we should) use nxter.org as domain and magazine title.

I initially bought the domain + created the site in order to make it a community project. Then as it turned out, I've been running it single handed for 6 months, with private life, full time job + other Nxt projects on the side. Thus I haven't been able to find time to develop it much, and various ideas have just become notes. I haven't even had time to fill out an application for MC in order to ask for compensation for the bills or the work.

The newsletters have currently 600+ readers, 100+ email subscribers, with numbers growing every week. Nxter.org feed is included in the official NxtWallet. Updates and articles are some of the most socially shared content in the Nxt Community, with prominent readers following it from outside Nxtville.

I've never made a serious effort to grow followers, add SEO and so on. When I do reach out, it has immediate effect, so I believe the interest is there, and it's a matter of taking action.

Newsletters are currently translated to Spanish and French.
The translators have shown interest in posting directly on nxter.org (maybe have a national subpage), so the site could be multilingual.

I think we should build on this 6 months effort, instead of starting a new site from scratch.

If more people (like you) will join and help, I believe we can build it to something extraordinary.

Thoughts? Please argue against it if you have a better idea or another opinion.

When I bought Nxter.org back in December, I didn't feel the tiniest disappointment that I couldn't get "nxt.org" or "nxt.com". Because I wanted (and want) to target people, the nxters, and describe the innovative solutions Nxt offers. I think we should have tech-talk, but IMO the main focus, and a way to reach the mainstream, should be the "human face" of Nxt, usecases and RL stories, and through this the Nxt protocol may become understandable to people. I hope these words makes sense to you.

What categories / sections should we offer in a Nxt-friendly crypto magazine?

I don't have a lot of time this weekend but I have a lot of ideas about this "NXT news site".

I have an idea for the "business plan" for a site like it.

We should organize an Hangout with the interested persons.

---

I think that is better to ground on the actual nxter.org website.

Interested persons, that I'm not already in contact with:
Please PM me your google acc, and I will set up a hangout after the weekend. I guess that's how it works?  :)

Hey apenzl,
here are a few thoughts:
1) I'd love to be involved whichever way this goes, but I'm probably not the right person to take the lead on this and don't want to hijack anyone else's idea.
2) I can certainly provide content, and a few ideas. I'm not experienced with the business side, though happy to learn.
3) It makes sense to build on existing work on NXTer.org.
4) But will the NXT slant alienate other readers? Or is it worth taking the hit from losing the majority of the bitcoin community and searching for newcomers to crypto? I like both the idea of going for general crypto audiences and giving it a NXT theme and showing NXT as leading the way. (If you're right about 'they will come to us' then that's the answer, I guess.)
5) Multilingual is great.
6) How to make it financially viable? Ideally that would mean paying contributors for their time as well as for hosting, etc. And it would be great to look outside the community for that, even in the short term. Other sites have ads for (e.g.) CoinSummit, trading platforms, mining companies. BitScan has a directory of businesses. These would be of limited help without a large bitcoin or real world readership. Is there scope for partnering with a NXT exchange, featuring it prominently and permanently somewhere? (NXThaus?) Or another NXT business? I'm not saying that potential revenue streams should dictate the direction taken, but on the other hand there needs to be some kind of stable income.

Anyone else have any thoughts?
