I just got nxt wallet. I tried to go to a faucet to get some starting coin and it said Invalid request when I entered my wallet ID. I cant forge, I cant buy, I cant send. Anyone know how I can receive from a faucet? Also do I need to have a public Key to receive? This seems extremely confusing for first timers. ??? any help would be awesome, my ID is 18017640589343434102

In order to forge, you need at least one outgoing transaction. You can still receive.
You automatically get a public key when you have an outgoing transaction, to do so either send 1 NXT to yourself, create an alias, send a message.
Keep in mind that you will not be able to forge until the outgoing transaction has at least 1440 confirmations.

does anyone know why this change was done?  I know you used to be able to forge w/o having a public key, and your first forged block generated this key.  but not anymore

You still get a public key by forging a block, but it is highly unpractical. If you have 10 NXT you would have to wait ages until you get to forge a block.
Having a public key also boosts your account protection from 64-bit to 256-bit entropy, so definitely good to do it as soon as possible.

You didn't say which faucet you were trying, but in any case, I just sent you 10 NXT. With that you can do a first transaction and your account will receive a public key.

I guess you are using freenxt.org since this is the only nxt faucet right now as far as i know.

You can contact me or info@freenxt.org . You can also click to get payed out anyway to a new account (see referrals)

Depends on the block. Some blocks are less than a minute, others can take a few minutes. But the transaction I sent to 18017640589343434102 already has several confirmations in my client.

Is your wallet blockchain fully downloaded?

does anyone know why this change was done?

That was added in one of the steps to TF. It's necessary for TF to get rid of an attack vector.

Dont you already verify that its your account with forging? Why the extra addition of using a public key?

The peers must know public keys of forging accounts in advance. If u don't reveal ur public key and then suddenly add a forged block then u break normal forging queue. This is why 1440 blocks delay was added.

Once you make your first transaction (register alias, send 1 NXT, set your account name, a message...) the network knows you and you'll have a public key. Then, once your first incoming NXT have received 1440 confirmations, which takes around 1 day and a half or two at the most, your balance will become effective and you can turn on forging.

Please note that if you want to forge in order to actually gain transaction fees, it's not going to happen with just a few NXT.

Personally, and for as long as you have few NXT, I'd forget about forging and explore the community and the Nxt features.
