Whitepaper?
« on: April 28, 2014, 05:39:32 pm »

Is there a NXT whitepaper? I'm looking for information at a higher level than reading the source code, but a bit more detailed than most of the end-user level stuff. For example, how does NXT deal with the problems of denial of service attacks, someone gaming the pseudo-random number generator, or secret-mining?

I've been learning a lot about proof-of-stake recently, and some of the objections to it, and I'm not sure how to apply what I've learnt to NXT. At the moment I am thinking PoS is really hard to get right.

Where? I've looked at, for example, http://www.thenxtwiki.org/wiki/Under_The_Hood, and some FAQs, but I don't see answers to the kinds of questions I asked.

This is a work-in-progress. It is currently being built by the community.

I think we should write : Since BCnext was so decentralized with his thoughts that he did not finished the white paper - "so let it be."

I believe OP raises very important questions.  These and other questions about the PoS implementation should be answered and understood by the community.  We also need to understand the PoS road map and who intends to contribute to its development.

I also think that PoS is really hard to get right.  Other PoS coins seem satisfied with a basic implementation.  They seem ok under basic conditions but are probably vulnerable to sophisticated attacks and gaming.  They are probably susceptible to large parallel forks which may cause issues on a true commercial setting.  They are certainly nowhere near as battle tested as bitcoin PoW.  They are probably also not capable of rapid confirmation times or thousands of transactions per second.

So what are the answers to OP's questions?  What are the plans to develop PoS further?  Nxt has a chance to be THE PoS coin.

What do people think of the idea of offering bounties to people who can successfully attack the PoS system?

mthcl posted a pretty good mathematical paper on NXT forging, I think it should be linked to from prominent places
