What is the master password ?
« on: April 03, 2017, 07:55:12 am »

I do not remember having registered a master password when creating my nxt wallet ?

Or perhaps the "master password" is the same thing as the "passphrase" (a list of 12 words) ?

If yes, why my passphrase is not accepted when I try to send some nxt to another address ? (I proceed by cut and paste and I don't think that I have added or removed characters by accident)

Hello patrickus,

when you registered an account in the MyNXT wallet, you had to enter an email and login password, and a master password, which is used in MyNXT to encrypt your wallet data in the site. This master password is only used in the MyNXT wallet, and is not equivalent to the passphrase for a Nxt account in the core Nxt Client. This was the step in the wallet creation process:

The actual Nxt passphrase for the account/s you have in the MyNXT wallet, which you could use to access the same account/s in the Nxt Client, can be exported doing a wallet backup - but for that, same as to sign any transactions, the wallet information needs to be decrypted, so your master password is necessary. Hopefully you can find it.

Thanks for these explanations. I have been able to retrieve my Nxt using the passphrase and the Nxt client.

It seems however that I have not any master password. Rather strange as I am usually very cautious with passwords.

It seems however that I have not any master password. Rather strange as I am usually very cautious with passwords.

I think there's simply a confusion between the Nxt Client and the MyNXT wallet.

The core Nxt Client, which apparently you used to create your account, requires the actual Nxt passphrase in order to operate with an account. When you generate a Nxt account using the core client, you either take the suggested twelve words random passphrase generated by the Nxt Client or introduce your own secure passphrase, which unlocks a certain Nxt account number. Then you save the passphrase to unlock the account again in the future, since the Nxt Client does not store it anywhere.

The MyNXT wallet is a third party development, which uses a different access scheme. It is a web wallet that runs in the client browser, not requiring the user to download any software or to synchronize with the Nxt network since it uses its own nodes. But for security reasons MyNXT will not store the Nxt passphrases for accounts created by users, nor transmit them over the network. It will only save an encrypted version of the passphrases/wallet (remember that a wallet file is basically a list of private keys for accounts; in Nxt, passphrase and private key are essentially the same thing). A master password is then required at registration in MyNXT, to encrypt the wallet information. This master password will be required every time the user wants to decrypt the wallet in order to sign transactions.

So the MyNXT master password and Nxt passphrase are different things. You cannot access a Nxt account in MyNXT using the Nxt passphrase.

Thanks. That is clear.

It seems that MyNxt has followed the same evolution as the web site Blockchain.info for the bitcoins.

Before, a Blockchain.info wallet was defined only by one private key. Now a Blockchain.info wallett is a set of private keys and there is a master password to access them.

Perhaps, when I have started using MyNext, a walette was defined only by one private key (passphrase), which would explain why I have not registered a master password.

Hi there,

Is it possible to access it the other way arround, opening MyNXT in the core client? I can enter my address but don't have the passphrase, I do have the walletfile. Im asking because I can't transfer my Ardor to Bittrex because I can't add a message transfering Ardor from MyNXT. Please assist.

Hi John,

indeed it is possible to open the account you use in the MyNxt wallet using the core Nxt Client, by exporting your MyNxt wallet data to a file. Steps are described here.

Hello, and keep calm.

This has been already said earlier in this topic and in other support topics in the forum, but repeating it again won't hurt:

The myNXT master password and the passphrase for a Nxt account are different things. You cannot unlock in the Nxt Client the account you operated in myNXT using the myNXT master password.

You can see your Nxt account introducing the address in the Nxt Client, as most of the account information is public in the blockchain. But in order to access private data (like encrypted messages received) or to send any transactions from the account, you need the passphrase for the account. In order to obtain the passphrase for the Nxt account you have in myNXT, please check the myNXT Wallet FAQ.

I have exactly the same problem. I do not remember having picked a master password. I do not remember having received a passphrase either. And I am usually extremely careful with passwords too, so I cannot understand how this is possible.

Slight panic here...

Registering an account in the myNXT web wallet always has required introduced a master password to encrypt the wallet data with, as explained here[/i]. You had to introduce a master password in order to have an account in myNXT.

If you have created an account in Nxt, using the official Nxt client, it generates a passphrase for you (equivalent to the private key in Bitcoin or Ethereum) and asks you to re-introduce it in order to make sure that is correctly saved.

Thx for the very quick reply. I create my passwords based on a fixed calculation. I've got different passwords for everything, but there is a certain logic in it. I've tried all possible combinations several times. Yet no result. I haven't got a clue about what could have happened. I have never been asked for the master password uptil now, since I want to backup my myNXT wallet.

If I find out what happened, I will report back. You never know it helps other users.

This is however a horrible experience...

So if I understand this well: if I don't find the master password before myNXT closes down, I can never retrieve my NXT coins?

Soon I will have a great collection of NXT and IGNIS for everybody to look at.

Maybe I could gain my money back asking entrance fees for my IGNIS and NXT expositions.

If you lost it, it is no different than losing a Bitcoin private key, or a Nxt account passphrase. See https://nxtforum.org/index.php?topic=14603.msg239065#msg239065

Yes that's clear.

But myNXT is closing down in 8 days. Does this mean that I have only 8 days left to find my Master Password in order to retrieve the passphrase? And after that, I will never be able to find the passphrase, even if I should find the Master Password back later??

You will understand that I am very frustrated right now. I seem to have forgotten a password of which I don't even remember I have picked it.

But don't get me wrong, VanBreuk, your help and replies are very much appreciated.

I understand. And I suppose you understand too that we're helping as far as we are able to.

If you believe there is a chance that you can eventually figure out your master password, send me a personal message. Maybe we can send you an encrypted copy of your wallet so you can have more time to try yourself. Note that we might not be able to do this until the myNXT wallet site is offline, but any NXT/ARDR you have in that account will participate in the snapshot so no worries in that sense.

Sir, I have written Dec 2015 for support for the same problem, and trying to find my password since two years now. For a meticulous person such a myself this is hard to accept that this was the only password over thousands I did not note. Same problem, I do not recall any master password at the time of registration. I may understand this is my problem, unless a coding mistake or a "nul" value has been set by the code.

However, I am also writing to request your kind support in downloading my wallet to secure it with me. I'll try to recuperate myself the password off-line. My situation is getting QUITE serious, you can check my account (or I can share details with you).

Can you please contact me privately. Than you !

Hello atan,

About the master password, please check this post that may clarify any doubts about when and how you introduced it.

I'm contacting you in personal message, but please keep in mind that myNXT has no copy of the users master passwords.
