Forging....
« on: October 13, 2014, 07:22:18 pm »

I'm forging.....what now? I'm trying to find my way around but still very new and overwhelmed. What does forging do and should I just leave it running?

Don't expect to earn a lot by forging, unless you've got a LOT of NXT sitting idly in your account. In which case you should invest it in assets anyway ;)
Forging is more about getting a small reward for helping secure the network. I don't think it resembles PoW mining at all.

if you have not big amout of NXT think about this http://pool.nxtcrypto.org/

it's best solution for small forgers (but anyway it would be good if you could run your node, it helps secure the network)

Don't take this calc too serious. According to it I should forge 7 blocks per month but so far my avg is >20

"Forging" means your node is helping to secure the network by offering to validate transactions. It uses bandwidth, but it helps the community if you leave it running.

Transactions are grouped into blocks every 100 or so seconds. "Forging a block" means validating all the transactions in it, and then broadcasting it to the other nodes. The account that does this is chosen at random, with the likelihood of any given account being chosen depending on its effective balance at the time. In practice that chance is vanishingly small, unless you have over 100k NXT. The account that forges a block gets a small reward, from the transaction fees paid in the block.
