Someone please help me recover my coins
« on: July 21, 2014, 04:51:24 pm »

When i started this process the NXT Client showed my account to be X

I sent coins from cryptsy to account X

Then the blockchain stopped auto-loading.  (3 hours waiting)

I restarted the blockchain.

The Client gave me account Y

Now my coins seem to have disappeared into the ether.  My account Y shows zero balance.

Several thousand blocks have transacted since this all happened.

password1 -> account X
password2 -> account Y

You are entering a different password. Please try to find out what could have changed. Like I said, text editors can mess with things.

If you feel safe enough, you could share your current password with a trusted forum member that would try to break into your old account and save your Nxt.

How many Nxt are in there? Maybe we can send you some.

It's the same password. (At least I think so.)

Should I try to use a different computer, download the client, enter the password and see if I can access the coins from a different installation of the client?

I am not panicked. 9,999 NXT just slightly perturbed.

It has to be a different password. Maybe you added a space at the end one of the times you entered it and not the other. Any discrepancy at all and you'll get a different account. Did you copy and paste or type it in?

This happens all the time with new users. We should have a FAQ link for this.
Users not accustomed to copying passphases it seems.

The same password always leads to the same address. Always.
If you get a different address, the most likely problem is that you used copy paste, and an extra space character is added to your string. If you are entering it manually, then you misstyped it.

Just think it through methodically, I'm sure you will figure out the problem.

Someone had a similar issue in another thread.  A suggested solution that recovered the passphase is to check if  a "c" or "v" character was accidentally added at the end during the cut/paste (ctrl c/v).  I you have a c or v at the end, try removing it.  Or try adding it.

Thanks everyone

Thanks everyone.

I guess it boils down to a password issue.

Funny thing is though, when you initialize the client it asks you to input the password twice.  They matched at that point.  I can't seem to think of any alternative password (w/typos or whatever) that yields the same account # to which the coins were sent.

Out about $1,000 in today's fiat.  Totally sucks.

I'll keep trying I guess.

It coul've happened when you closed the text editor  and saved your password. Nex time you opened it, the editor messed with a special character?

KeePass2 is the solution to such problems and protects yo against keyloggers. (Or Lastpass)

That was me, who suggested to add "c" or "v" in the end of passphrase. While NXT in account looks like lost, You can PM me with your passphrasse and Account No., I could try to play with it and recover real passphrase. For small bounty, if you trust :)

I did the same mistake.

Entered my password correct where I were asked for it twice and I did not think about what was my address. The next time I logged in I did a spelling mistake while entering my password.

So my first transfer of NXT went to my account with an unknown spelling mistake.

I'll keep trying I guess.
My plan is to just leave them like this and maybe one day I write the same spelling mistake. If that does not happen, then I will make a brute-force program that use my password as a starting point.

After reading that new users had to enter the password twice the first time, and that went without a problem, here are some of the causes I can think of:

INVISIBLE CHARACTERS
- There may be some invisible characters copied from the GUI into the clipboard. This could be a carriage return, or a new line, or any other invisible character.
- When this password is pasted and then saved into a text editor or word processor, these characters are either stripped, malformed or converted into another characters.

SPECIAL SYMBOLS
- I am not sure if there is any suggested word using any special symbol. If there is, this could also be converted or malformed when saved in a Text Editor using an encoding different than the browser.
- Some rich text editors such as Microsoft Word added extra information when you copy a chunk of text from it. Such as meta information, or HTML like tags, or software specific things.

AUTOCORRECT
- Some of the words may be automatically corrected when pasted into a smart text editor or a word processor such as Microsoft Word or Apple Pages. Or this programs tries to make sense of the sentence (the password) pasted into it.
- Autocorrect may be enabled at Operating System level and it affects all elements where text can be placed and edited, including browser's text area or a simple text editor such as notepad.

TYPO
- Extra characters, deleted characters, placed in the wrong order in a word, etc.
- The suggested password contains a typo which then later autocorrected.

If I am not mistaken, there is already a bulleted list as precautions when creating a wallet. I am not sure where, it could be in the wiki though.

Maybe it can be a standard procedure to use the wallet opened by using the already saved password?

To clarify, I didn't cut & paste nor use a text editor.  I typed it directly into the text boxes.

I am mystified because it's a passcode I have used before.

Like I said...

Thanks for the input.  I won't stop trying new variations because the coins WILL be worth more in the future.

Then you maybe made a typo when you entered it the first time.

I forgot to mention; we cannot leave out any possibility that there is a bug in the client. =)

Try writing the pass phrase with CapsLock!

What are the odds that I mistyped it EXACTLY the same way twice?  I used a 75-character passcode. (I tried with CAPS lock, thanks though.)

Don't know much about these technical matters but...could there be a bug in the client?

10,000 NXT is no small amount.  Very frustrated.

Did you test the new account with a small deposit first? And then its wise to log out and in again, maybe twice or three times to be sure you have full control, before you fund it with more.

Bit of a long shot, but if you are using a different keyboard (you mentioned other PC's), could a different key mapping be in play?  :-\

Please confirm that you really typed 75-character passcode, but didn't copy paste.
Also, do you use the same PC? Sometimes it could happen, regarding different key mappings on different PC's.
