Hi Karl

Never used that piece of code and probably I'm not the only one... therefore cannot help directly.

Would you mind telling us, what the task is you would use it for?

Cheers LiQio

I am assuming you are on linux, do not know if it would differ for other OSs.

This is the procedure:
1. Download the file and unzip it.
2. Open a terminal. Generally it is under Accessories > Terminal.
3. Move inside the unzipped file
Code: [Select]
cd /home/yourname/where/you/unzipped
4. Compile the code:
Code: [Select]
javac nxt_account_id.java
5. Now you can start searching. Let's suppose you think your passphrase is: "password12 ". However when you try it on the client it does not open the correct account (18161724644051137604), it opens something else. In this case, what is causing the problem is that "extra space". By issuing the command:
Code: [Select]
echo "password12 " | ./remove_a_letter.awk | xargs java nxt_account_id
It will return you:
Code: [Select]
'assword12 ' 11353526894274784949
'pssword12 ' 5818812456346808695
'pasword12 ' 1235016523988140450
'pasword12 ' 1235016523988140450
'passord12 ' 16673039731417142391
'passwrd12 ' 3758574129693181259
'passwod12 ' 624185865338108882
'passwor12 ' 17566519075947734402
'password2 ' 3243235647119920395
'password1 ' 4951785561765969561
'password12' 18161724644051137604

In other words, it will make some minor modifications to your alleged passphrase and it will calculate the corresponding account number. So, right now, you check the list to see if your account number appears. If it does, like in this case as the last entry, you can figure out what was wrong with your password.

How long is it?
Are there spaces or line-feeds in it?
Are there words in it which might have been auto-corrected by Word (e.g. capitalizing first letter or the like)?

It's about 50 characters; no spaces or line breaks; random collection of digits, so there shouldn't be any auto-correction. The first digits are symbols (% and &), so there shouldn't be any capitalizing of a first letter.

Could you try without the leading "%&" ?
Could you try with a trailing space ?

Try to put 1-2 spaces to the begining of password and 1-2 spaces to the end of password. Play with spaces.

It should be stressed somewhere that people need to use plain text editor to save their pass and not some feature rich text editors with autocorrection. Especially not M$ Word. Just use notepad or even better notepad++

Still doesn't help if your OS based auto correct is on, though :p

Better even: Everyone should use KeePass, Lastpass or 1password. Plus print out the password on paper and store it somewhere safe.

I hope you'll recover you password Karl! How much is in the account?
