Password Mistype Recovery
« on: December 27, 2017, 08:46:47 pm »

Hello,
Back in June I bought 3,361 NXT form Poloniex and created an NXT account on the client (NXT-HZWA-YMF6-JUH7-9HEZD). When I logged in to send the funds from Poloniex, I believe I miss-typed my password, and sent the NXT to the wrong account (NXT-QJZJ-3BHJ-5GD2-9Z8BB). I recently discovered this, and was instructed by the NXT support to use the PassphraseRecovery tool:

https://nxtforum.org/general-discussion/passphrase-recovery-took-coming-soon/?PHPSESSID=n022s4o66s2llrem41ekrhfq23

I set this up and used it with no success, but since it searches through the public key directory, I am not surprised. This (NXT-QJZJ-3BHJ-5GD2-9Z8BB) account has no public key assigned to it since there has never been funds sent from that account.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can find the miss-typed password for that account?

Thank you.

Hey Rex, we have the same problem.  I've just posted in the General discussion section a solicitation for someone who can brute force my mistyped passphrase.  I'm now going on to the dark web to find a hacker that can do this as well.  If I find someone I'll pass it on.  I'm offering a reward as my NXT locked up is quite substantial.

In the section about passphrase problems from the Jelurida support desk they recommend a simple web based tool to figure out typo errors in passphrases.

https://ardor.tools/typo/typo.html

Enter in the left field the passphrase that does not work and seems to have some error, the Nxt address you're trying to access in the right field, and click for "Start search for 1 mistype" (if you believe there is a typing error somewhere) or "Start search with 1 incorrect word" (if you believe that the error was made when typing or writing down the passphrase words when you generated the account).

Edit: working only for accounts with public key in the blockchain, so not for new accounts. Thanks for the reference @JesusJames

Whoever can build Eclipse Java projects can use this old tool from Jones - https://github.com/jonesnxt/typo

Or send me a PM to try it.

There's no way to fully recover your secret passphrase starting for scratch (or almost from scratch); Keep in mind that if someone else were able to discover your passphrase, they would gain access to your account. That's why your passphrase is made out of 12 random words separated by blank spaces between the words, to make it impossible to bruteforce it.

There is a Passphrase recovery tool included with the NRS since version 1.11.6, which may become handy only if you have a pretty good idea what your passphrase is but perhaps you made a typo while entering it or used a unicode special character without realizing it.

The NxtWiki has an article dedicated to this utility with more info about how to run it > https://nxtwiki.org/wiki/Passphrase_Recovery
