Newbie install problems
« on: April 21, 2014, 06:22:31 pm »

I'm having trouble getting a NXT install working.

I'm running Windows 8.1 Update. I've installed from http://www.nxtcommunity.org/nxt-coin/install-nxt-software-your-computer, to my Program Files. When I run run.bat a console window pops up for a few seconds and then disappears again. Enough happens that I'm pretty sure it has found Java and is executing. I tried editing the batch file to add a pause at the end, but all that gives me is "Press any key to continue...". It seems Java is running in a different console window to the batch file.

Also, when I navigate to https://127.0.0.1:7875 in Firefox, NoScript has a hissy fit. When I click Options, it shows me an ABE (Applications Boundaries Enforcer) panel. I'd rather not disable ABE or NoScript entirely. I have no idea what I'm supposed to click to enable NXT only.

Someone has pointed me to http://nxtclient.org/. I tried the recommended client there, which is either called NXTRA or NXT Wallet, I'm not sure which. When I run the executable, it complains that the NRS server has executed. I never ran a server. I tried running the run.bat in the nxt sub-folder, and that failed the same way the other run.bat failed.

I have to say, my first impressions of NXT are very poor. Even the suggestion I found to edit the run.bat was hard, as Notepad refuses to save it. I had to save it to a different directory, and then move it to the right place manually. Also, it was a struggle to find some place where I could get support. Most of my searches found useless or out of date information. I only discovered this forum by chance; Google didn't find it, nor do I see it linked from any of the pages Google did find. If it happens that I'm posting this in the wrong place, please tell me the right one.

Hello Brangdon,

the last version of the Nxt software (you can find it also linked on top of this forum) should run in Windows out of the box by executing the provided run.bat - as long as Java is up to date, that's why LiQio is asking.

Also, the last versions of the Nxt client do not work by default through https anymore. To access the client interface you should go to http://127.0.0.1:7875 instead.

About the difference between server and client, they are both part of the Nxt software. The process that runs in the java window is the server, in charge of communication with the Nxt network, and the client is the web interface the users access to operate.

The Java version is 1.7.0_55-b13. I had installed it from a link on the nxtcommunity site.

Hi Brangdon,

We know that the current client is not an easy way to open an account.

We are working on a one click install/open client so we can finally get rid of this negative first impression of NXT.
it will be released very soon!

The Java version is 1.7.0_55-b13. I had installed it from a link on the nxtcommunity site.

And just to make sure... you made sure Java is updated, downloaded the last client (currently 0.9.9), unzipped it, executed the included "run.bat" as is, and the command window closed after a few seconds?

And to be able to see any errors, you added pause at the end of the run.bat file, saved it, ran it again, and the only thing you saw in the command window was "Press any key to continue"?

Something doesn't add up here.

I think I found the problem myself, and have a working client now. Some of what follows is thus moot for me, but I'm posting it anyway so you can see how my experience went.

And just to make sure... you made sure Java is updated, downloaded the last client (currently 0.9.9),
I had downloaded from the links I gave in my first post. The version from nxtcommunity.org was 0.9.7-1.zip. The version from nxtclient.org was called NxtWallet-Win.zip. I've now downloaded the 0.9.9.zip version from your link. It behaves the same way as the other two versions.

When I run the batchfile, I get a window for the .bat, and then another window appears with the JAVA output. The pause only affects the console window, not the "NXT NRS" one.

Later...

OK, I think the problem is that this program won't run from "Program Files". I copied it to another directory and run.bat runs from there.

To access the client interface you should go to http://127.0.0.1:7875 instead.
That has the same NoScript problem. I get "Request GET{http://127.0.0.1:7875/ ...} filtered by ABE: local DENY}" What ABE settings do I need?

Later....

OK, I've now copied Nxt Wallet out of "Program Files", and that seems to run too. It looks like it wants to use its own version of the server (and won't connect to one that's already running), and it was failing for the same reason, but giving even less information about it. This client is showing a dashboard, so I think I have a working system. I'd still like to know what NoScript/ABE settings I would need to use FireFox.

I have NoScript and ABE on Firefox and they have no issues with it. The only thing I had to do was to allow 127.0.0.1 on NoScript, nothing else. Does it give any error or something?

Can you reboot the computer then try Nxt Wallet.exe ? Let it load it completely (it can take a while waiting NRS to start).

The problem seems to be with where the link comes from. If I click on the link in #2 it doesn't work. If I type http://127.0.0.1:7875/ into the browser address bar by hand, it does work. ABE is about establishing the boundaries of applications, and it seems to think going from nxtforum.org to 127.0.0.1:7875 crosses a boundary, and that GETting the URL into my browser might have some side-effect.

Anyway, the solution seems to be to copy and paste the link, rather than just click on it.
