How to find my public key
« on: February 26, 2016, 02:19:03 am »

The first time I logged into myNXT with my passphrase i didnt save my public key because i assumed i would just be able to access it whenever i needed to. Now I'm trying to buy some NXT from coinimal and they require my public key, but apparently the only way I can now access to it is by looking at a transaction detail, the only problem being that having 0 NXT i can't send any transaction.
Bottom line: can someone send me like 1 NXT so that I should be able to get to my own public key and so proceed to buy myself some currency?

Of course if there's any other, possibly less cumbersome way, I'd be happy to hear about it.

Thanks!

Beikeni

Hello beikeni,

As you perhaps know, now it is not necessary to enter the recipient public key when sending NXT to a newly created account. But some services or exchanges may still ask for it, for additional safety reasons.

I've sent you a few NXT to get you started. Now, if you need your public key anyways, if your account was already completely included in the network, you could enter this in your browser while Nxt is running:

http://localhost:7876/nxt?requestType=getAccountPublicKey&account=NXT-2QNJ-GJ8X-N95Q-6MKA4

Until your account is fully known in the blockchain, which will happen over the next blocks, one instant way for you to know an account public key (in case you need to introduce it in a form right away) is by knowing the account passphrase. While Nxt is running, you could type this into your browser window:

http://localhost:7876/nxt?requestType=getAccountId&secretPhrase=PASSPHRASE

replacing PASSPHRASE with the secret passphrase for the account you want to know the public key from. This will return in the same browser window a response with both the account ID and the public key.

Edit: I just realized you were talking specifically about the myNXT wallet. In this case, the passphrase you are using to access your myNXT wallet is not the passphrase that would unlock the account running a Nxt client, so the second method I suggested above would not work so easily. You'd need to export your wallet from myNXT and read it locally in under to obtain the full passphrase for that account... probably easier to wait until your incoming NXT receive enough confirmations. Then your public key will appear visibly in your myNXT wallet.

Thank you VanBreuk, I immensely appreciate your help.

I was wrong, the wallet I'm using it's not actually myNXT, I guess myNXT is the web version while I've downloaded the one that runs in local. So the link to complete with my pass phrase worked perfectly.

I didn't receive your transfer yet (which I'll happily send back to you, since its only purpose was to help me see my public key) and if I'm understanding this branch of technology correctly, its because I haven't finished downloading the blockchain.

I got a notification saying I should send some kind of outgoing transaction to incorporate my public key in the blockchain and so improve my account's security, so i jumped on the opportunity and sent you back your friendly transfer minus 1 nxt which went into paying the transaction fee (i'm having a temporary issue with my bank, they've just renewed their system and I have to go through an authentication procedure before i can authorize foreign transfers (again)), so i didnt manage to load up my wallet yet.

Again, thank you fellow stranger!

I'm getting the following warning on my dashboard:

Quote
Warning!: Your account does not have a public key! This means it's not as protected as other accounts. You must make an outgoing transaction to fix this issue. (Set account info, send a message, buy an alias, send NXT, ...)

I was able to find my public key with the following URL:

localhost:7876/nxt?requestType=getAccountId&secretPhrase=PASSPHRASE

However what to do now with it? I don't know where to put my public key now. I basically want that my account is properly set up. I didn't find much infos about what to do not having a public key. Seems this is usually done automatically when creating an account, but I don't know what went wrong there.

It's not a good idea to write your passphrase as part of an URL in your browser. Not if you are keen on keeping your passphrase a secret. It will be stored in your browsers cache, and if you are using a modern browser it's likely that it will be sent to the cloud.

Better to click on the Account info:

Thanks a good point, I was wondering about this too. But didn't find another way. Actually account info doesn't show the public key for me (just: "/"). So, it's not just that my public key is not published but somehow my account doesn't recognize a public key altogether. I'm wondering if in this case the following suggestion helps:

Make an outgoing transaction, send yourself 1 NXT.

Or do I need to tell my NXT client what the public key is before I do the transaction? If so, how? It's quite confusing that the software keeps saying:

Just send 1 NXT to yourself, the warning will go away and you'll be all set to go :)

You need to login using your passphrase. I should have mentioned that.

Ah ok, I was not aware about the option to login with passphrase. It makes sense, thanks a lot.

The possibility is not obvious :) I edited my last post on how to do it.

You have to make an outgoing transaction (anything, set account info, send NXT, ...) from that account to publish the public key.
