Title: Download the Blockchain from peerexplorer.com
Post by: Tosch110 on March 23, 2015, 06:57:14 pm
A small guide how to get the Blockchain from HTTP Download as offered from Peerexplorer (http://www.peerexplorer.com/)

1) Get Nxt. Download the zip from the latest Nxt Version: https://nxtforum.org/nrs-releases/

2) Unzip it. In the extraced folder, you will find a folder called "nxt".

3) Now, before you start Nxt, go to http://www.peerexplorer.com, browse to the bottom where you see a link "Download the Nxt blockchain".

4) Again, you will get a zip file, unzip it to find again a folder called "nxt" with another folder "nxt_db". Place the whole folder "nxt_db" into the (step 2) "nxt" folder.
(if there already is a nxt_db folder, delete it)

5) Run Nxt if you are on Windows run.bat or on linux run.sh

6) Open your favorite browser and guide it to: http://localhost:7876

That's it, maybe you are missing a day or some hours, which should be caught up within minutes.

How to start with minting? after successfully downloading the Blockchain and How to configure with mint batch file?

5) Run Nxt if you are on Windows run.bat or on linux run.sh

Note: It may happen that the NRS used is not up to date with the blockchain. This did happen to me on OSX as the download file from nxt.org is still provide an old version of the NRS. In this case before step 5 the user should download the latest NRS from https://bitbucket.org/JeanLucPicard/nxt/downloads (https://bitbucket.org/JeanLucPicard/nxt/downloads) and replace the NRS from the OSX app package.

To do so once downloaded the app, right click on it, select show package contents, go into contents > resources and replace the nxt folder with the latest one downloaded from bitbucket. Then the app will start with no issue in reading the blockchain!

I think it is not need anymore with the new official client. You can now use the client while downloading the blockchain.

That is true! However, I've been off the blockchain for quite a while, and I still need to download ~286k blocks and somehow it won't progress. So is there another mirror to download the blockchain manually? Because that would save me heaps of time :D

According to peerexplorer.com, the blockchain must be around ~730mb in total. I've been downloading the chain for 1,5 days straight. My connection is not crappy :). And for some reason, after downloading a few hunderd blocks, it just adds a few hunderd more to the total count. So it must be bugged, since it would be theoretically impossible to ever download it like this :P

The blockchain download link hosted on Dropbox is again down for some days now:

Quote
Error (429)
This link is temporarily disabled. The person who shared it hit their daily limit of traffic or downloads. Learn about traffic limits.

Can this be fixed by maybe moving / adding another hosting service?
And besides would be nice if the link could be kept the same so that I can use it in my scripts  ;)

Warning: You are most likely on a fork (base target is very high).

What should I do?
Thanks

This message is usually a false alarm, but take a look in the client at the most recent blocks (Settings>Blocks, top right corner of client screen):

If what you see matches up to this, then we are on the same blockchain, and you are probably not on a fork.

Thanks, but this is not a link which can be used in a script, need to click download manually?

Besides, how do we know we can trust you  ;)
I think it would still be preferred to have it fixed on the official nxtportal.org domain, no offence  ;D

Not that I know of, I'm not sure who runs that site, but they would need to upgrade their dropbox or move it somewhere else.

In the mean time, I will host a backup of the NXT chain here in the footer: https://ardor.tools/

Edit:  It looks like crimi runs that site, so they will be the ones to contact :)

Are you referring to your link?  I think people's issue is that people don't know who you are  :)  You're a brand new account.  People have trust issues, especially when it comes to money

Peerexplorer's download has been offline for a while now, I ran into the same trouble while creating a new node. I've put up this https://blockchain-db.tk/ (https://blockchain-db.tk/) for the time being. Will try to keep it updated as long as peerexplorer's mirror stays unavailable :)

Don't edit that - edit nxt.properties instead. Otherwise your changes will be over-written when you upgrade.

I posted a thread but figured I'd post here as well.

I've been trying to download the blockchain from two different PCs and it keeps stalling once I get to around the timestamp of the block to where I started my download. Then it will just hang and stop and the blocks to download will start building up. I downloaded Wicket's backup last night and was able to sync the blockchain fully for the first time, only to have it stop at that point and start hanging again and falling behind. My node keep seems to be switching on and off as well. It's been pretty frustrating I just want my blockchain to sync and I've been trying to download it for several days. Any help would be appreciated. About to try on a 3rd pc. Thanks.

Before install the extracted zip files you must shutdown all the clients or servers
Here some screenshots how to do it.

First shutdown the nxt client
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0Bxil1u8dt_kvUk5TTGNDOFRobk0 (https://drive.google.com/open?id=0Bxil1u8dt_kvUk5TTGNDOFRobk0)

Then remove all these files
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0Bxil1u8dt_kvWEN6aVdsZzdkTWs (https://drive.google.com/open?id=0Bxil1u8dt_kvWEN6aVdsZzdkTWs)

Then copy the extracted zip file to that directory
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0Bxil1u8dt_kvRDUtZlJLOVVrbmc (https://drive.google.com/open?id=0Bxil1u8dt_kvRDUtZlJLOVVrbmc)

Start your client or server and give it some time to synchronize the missing blocks before you install it on the other nodes.

By the way i'm not so familiar with the Windows platform. But i have download and tested my own blockchain file with Windows 7 under Virtualbox and it works.

Question?

Would downloading the blockchain from peerexplorer constitute running a full node??

Follow up....If I am asking this question, I probably shouldnt be running a full node? Or give it a run?

Yes. A full node is a node that keeps its own copy of the blockchain, while a light node gets blockchain information from another peer.
