University of Nicosia - Master’s Degree Program in Digital Currency Offered Online and On-Campus

- I am one of the 615 students who attended the first semester of Free, Open MOOC Led By Bitcoin Experts; “Introduction to Digital Currencies” Course

first course: http://digitalcurrency.unic.ac.cy/free-introductory-mooc/course-statistics#Demographics
Quote
According to a demographics survey that each student had to complete, the first MOOC in Digital currencies had 615 students registered in the online course, coming from 76 different countries from all continents. 89.9% were men and the majority of the participants were young, between 25-44. Younger and older age groups have also been represented.
Regarding their educational level, the vast majority have completed a Bachelors’ degree, whereas more than 50% of students are above post-graduate educational level and around 5% hold a PhD. Furthermore, more than 65% of the participants are currently employed and another 20% are students. Additionally, 56,6% of students expressed interest in participating in the full MSc in Digital Currencies.
What is also worth mentioning, is the previous experience and involvement of the first cohort of the MOOC with Digital Currencies, before the course started: 80.6% of them had already used a digital currency wallet in the past, 75.8% had already bought or sold an amount of digital currency, whereas 54,2% had already transacted with the use of digital currencies, in terms of purchasing goods or services using this means of payment. An amazing 23.3% of them had already sold goods or services and been paid in digital currency whereas 8.6% had already been involved in programming or scripting on Bitcoin or any other alternative coin.

Another semesters: 2nd course just ended, 3rd is planned for May 2015.

About:

Quote
The course is designed to provide an introductory understanding of decentralized digital currencies (cryptocurrencies) such as bitcoin. In particular, the course will survey the theory and principles by which cryptocurrencies operate, practical examples of basic cryptocurrency transactions, the likely interaction of cryptocurrencies with the banking, financial, legal and regulatory systems, and how cryptocurrencies could be viewed within a framework of innovation and development.
The course will consist of four general topics:
Theoretical introduction to digital currencies: This will include the history of digital currencies, the invention of decentralized consensus through proof-of-work, and a technical overview of cryptographic currencies such as bitcoin, as well as alternative/advanced uses of the blockchain.
Practical introduction to digital currencies: This will include practical, introductory exercises in utilizing and constructing cryptocurrency transactions.
Banking, financial and regulatory implications of digital currencies: Overview of how cryptocurrencies map to the existing monetary and banking system and possible approaches to regulation and development.
Innovation & development: How cryptocurrencies can be viewed through innovation frameworks and what possibilities exist for cryptocurrencies to accelerate development.

Learning Outcomes
After completion of the course students are expected to be able to:
Understand the technology components of blockchain-based digital currencies, the process of currency issuance, proof-of-work, consensus and distributed ledger
Demonstrate an understanding of digital currencies and be able to conduct transactions from a digital currency wallet
Understand more advanced uses of the blockchain such as escrow services, asset registration, attestation and smart contracts
Understand alternatives to bitcoin, such as alt-coins, IOU-based systems and Ethereum
Understand what parallels and differences cryptocurrencies have with the existing monetary and banking systems
Understand likely frameworks for regulating cryptocurrencies
Be able to place cryptocurrencies in the context of disruptive innovations and understand their potential for growth or development

How it looked:
- courses needed a lot of time, there were many exercises, homeworks
- biggest advantage was a discussion, you could talk to all 615 students, tenths were active
- half of the courses were lead by Andreas Antonopoulos! We were asking him lots of questions..
- their videos were really very long

possible cooperation:
a) using gained know-how, methodology
b) advertise Nxt-courses via forum
c) provide textbooks, resources (theses, articles via e-library), basically hand the teaching materials to their teachers and provide Nxt-related articles to the students, they can decide to use them
d) true cooperation with the course leaders and the University, they have a Masters programme, so Nxt-related course could be optional course at the Masters programme (for example Hassen is trying to spend an internship there)

Czech Universities
This is current state of planned events. Number of Universities and lectures here could be larger very easily, if the crowd funding would be successful, add Slovakian Unis...

University of Economics in Prague
- Nxt for students project
- Hassen is starting an official 12-week course about Digital currencies in English, in few weeks http://digimeny.cz/prvni-ceska-vysoka-skola-bude-vyucovat-o-kryptomenach-2/ (so he could mention Nxt :D ) but I could also go there, make videos and place them to Nxt Academy to have some original content and invite more users to the whole platform

Charles University, Faculty of Humanities, Social and Cultural Ecology department
- I am planning one workshop for the students of Environmental Economics I in March.

University of South Bohemia, Faculty of Economics
- same as above
+ maybe additional lecture for more participants

Faculty of Electrical Engineering
- planned lecture

Bitcoin meetup at Paralelní Polis
- Czech largest Btc community
- planned lecture

Coin Academy
- simple video-aggregator, but widely oriented = more users
- it should be easy to implement Nxt-related courses here

The College Cryptocurrency Network (CCN)
- way more than just a video-aggregator
- closed environment :(
Quote
The College Cryptocurrency Network (CCN) was formed as a hodgepodge of "Bitcoin Clubs" at Stanford, MIT, and the University of Michigan in early 2014 as a means to properly educate young people about the potential of this incredible new technology. The Network has since spread to every habitable continent, with well over 100 chapters, from Kenya to the Philippines, from middle schools to PhD programs. We even have a network of academics as to provide cryptocurrency and blockchain researchers with the best means to stay connected.
Quote
CCN provides students, academics, and faculty with guidance, administrative and academic resources, job and internship opportunities, industry connections, and a network of like-minded individuals seeking to bring blockchain technology to the masses.
Goals:
- provide them educational materials, so the students of College Cryptocurrency Network could use them
- press/media/marketing cooperation, chance to be mentioned in the articles..
- contacts, advertisement, projects..

Coursera
- = TOP platform for online courses, 11 million users, I attended few of them
- currently offer only Cryptography and Cybersecurity programs, nothing more cryptocurrency related
- very difficult to get there, we will need intermediate steps (1st make courses at real universities, then bring online version here / provide teaching materials to existing teachers)

similar projects: edX, SkilledUp, OpenU, Udacity, aggregator: class-central.com

Bitcoin-friendly Universities

Princeton UniversityBTC-Tech: Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency Technologies Online course
- textbooks
- planned videos
Quote
How does Bitcoin work? What makes Bitcoin different? How secure are your Bitcoins? How anonymous are Bitcoin users? What determines the price of Bitcoins? Can cryptocurrencies be regulated? What might the future hold?

After this course, you’ll know everything you need to be able to separate fact from fiction when reading claims about Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. You’ll have the conceptual foundations you need to engineer secure software that interacts with the Bitcoin network. And you’ll be able to integrate ideas from Bitcoin in your own projects.

Lectures
There will be 11 video lectures, at the rate of 1 per week, starting Feb 16.
The lecturers are Arvind Narayanan, Joseph Bonneau, Edward Felten (Princeton University), and Andrew Miller (University of Maryland).
Each week there will be a Google hangout with that week's lecturer.
