NRS v1.4.8
« on: January 11, 2015, 09:53:58 pm »

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1

Release 1.4.8

https://bitbucket.org/JeanLucPicard/nxt/downloads/nxt-client-1.4.8.zip

sha256:

253b2b2cdafbe80627997bfebc3c667ec4df80d0435f8e5e5e472cb27d9bbfe4  nxt-client-1.4.8.zip

Change log:

Removed some validations and logic no longer needed after the Monetary System
block.

Added a checkpoint at block 330000.

Various minor UI bugfixes.

Fixed currency search. Fixed handling of very high minting difficulties.
Fixed concurrency issues with Scrypt minting, can use multiple threads now.

Allow use of https for submitting minting transactions, set
nxt.mint.useHttps=true. Note that this will accept any SSL certificate as valid,
therefore will not protect you against man-in-the-middle attacks when minting.

Allow no more than one unconfirmed minting transaction per account and minted
currency to be accepted in the unconfirmed pool.

Improvements in translations handling, documented in DEVELOPERS-GUIDE.md.

Better validation of hallmarks for peers with multiple addresses. Do not
blacklist peers with invalid hallmarks but just treat them as not hallmarked.

Blacklist peers with versions older than 1.4.

As more than 720 blocks have passed since the MS block, nodes older than 1.4
are now on a fork that will not be resolved by itself. To fix that, upgrading
such nodes from a version older than 1.4 to this release will cause deletion
and full download of the blockchain.

It's CfB  ;)
Enter the IP 188.138.33.10 in your browser and you will see.
It's a tool to see who will likely forge the next block.

Would be nice to have a 3-letter|4-letter|5-letter currencies filter on the currencies list.

Would be nice to have a 3-letter|4-letter|5-letter currencies filter on the currencies list.

Since it doesn't overlap, it would also fit in the "All Currencies|My Currencies" navigation.

Is...

Quote
Added a checkpoint at block 330000

...achieved by...

Quote
Blacklist peers with versions older than 1.4.

?

If not, can it be said the former is a centralised checkpoint?

The checkpoint is achieved by calculating a checksum of all transactions up to and including that block, just like the previous two checkpoints we had. It is not achieved by the blacklisting of older versions, this blacklisting is just for performance reasons, not to waste resources feeding blocks and transactions to peers that cannot accept them anyway.

Yes, it can be said that it is a centralized checkpoint. It is more than 720 blocks in the past though, so this block is not going to change whether there is a checkpoint at it or not.

Are you sure your node http://192.168.178.28:7876/ is up and running and is accessible from your workstation (not blocked by a firewall for example) ?
What response do you get if you paste http://192.168.178.28:7876/nxt?code=SILVR&requestType=getCurrency into the browser address bar ?

There`s no connection in the Browser.
nxt Server and mint Terminal are on the same MacbookPro, server started successfully.
It worked Properly without any Changes in 1.4.7.1
Router is forwarding ports 7874-7876, 192.168.178.28 is the MacBooks local IP.

"Next page" in My Currencies is still not functional.

I don't have a test case for this on the testnet, just from stepping into the code with debugger I don't see any obvious problem.
Do you mean that the "Next page" button appears but does nothing when clicked or it does not appear at all ?

When I click on Next page, the Previous page link appears, but I still see the first page filled with currencies, and the currency that didn't fit in the first page doesn't appear. This bug is only present in My Currencies, not in All Currencies.

Here is the mint worker controlling the default server address:

Code: [Select]
String host = Convert.emptyToNull(Nxt.getStringProperty("nxt.mint.serverAddress"));
        if (host == null) {
            try {
                host = InetAddress.getLocalHost().getHostAddress();
            } catch (UnknownHostException e) {
                host = "localhost";
            }
        }

Perhaps you have a typo in your hosts file which makes 127.0.1.1 your localhost ?

Minting with more than one machine/worker, when one of them makes a mint, does the other one receive a notification of this event in the blockchain and increment the counter? My guess is it is not notified, and produces this "error":"Counter 19 has to be bigger than 19". Is this a known issue?

Yes, every mint transaction for currency/account needs to have a higher counter than all previous mints or otherwise you could just submit the same hash again and again.
If you are minting from two machines setup each machine to mint on a different account.

Seems like it.
I minted an ELEMS on another machine on the same account when the worker was still searching

But always the transfer Window keeps open and nothing happens for at least 1 hour.
Any Idea what to do?

What does "counter" mean?

BTW, can I mine 2 coins at two computers with the same account? Each computer mine one coin.

POW miner generally detect when a block is found and automatically search with the new hash

Is it possible to make the same  things for the minting? Having the same account for different machine is a lot easier to setup.

Is there any plan to improve the mint tool or you 'll let that for  3rd party?

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I read it on the wiki that the mint restriction is that there can only be one mint transaction per account per currency per block while the amount of minted currency units is not exceeding the 1/10'000 limit.

I am guessing that the development of improved minting tool is stressed to the 4rd party. Unless in case of urgent matter (such as bugs fixing or adding new essential features).

Counter prevents you from submitting the same nonce multiple times its unique per currency/account and always increases

And for two currencies on two machines - yes you can

Just wanted to inform you guys that we now have a new subboard on the forum for NRS Client Development, since non-feature related topics like UI, translation, navigation,... where before scattered across different boards like "General Discussion" or the child boards for new releases:

https://nxtforum.org/nrs-client-development/

Feel free to use if you have a certain client topics in mind which are under-discussed right now! :-)

So great, well under 24hours after announcement, we have already three language translations for more or less complete (Portuguese (Brazilian), French, Russian is the winner for now :-)), thank you so much for this, here an overview of the current status:

There is also translation effort going on for Lithuanian, Dutch, Spanish, Turkish, German, Italian, Simplified Chinese, but all these languages can also still need help since there are a couple of hundred strings additionally to translate.

Regarding the size of the languages there is especially expertise for these languages needed, since they are still not yet (enough) covered:

  • One or more of the different Indian languages (Hindi, Bengali, Marathi...)
  • Arabic
  • Korean
  • Hebrew
  • Polish
  • Turkish

So, again, translation takes place on Crowdin, everyone feeling comfortable translating is welcome to join! :-)

Cheers

Two different accounts have the same 0.6 rate, one buying, the other one selling in the EGOLD booth. I suspect only Exchange Requests can match them, but it still looks weird. In real life two banks wouldn't buy from each other if they agree on the price, it's an interesting question? :)

Just answered some context requests on Crowdin, if you have got questions around strings just write a short note ("Context needed" or similar is enough), I'll try to figure that out.

There seems to be also a specific functionality "Request Context", then it is even better if you use this for the purpose.

This version and the Monetary System are really exciting! I'm a fan of the shiny new toys :)

But, a line appeared in my terminal saying I was on a peers fork. I've never seen that and immediately shut down. Do I need to re-download the blockchain?

"switched to peer's fork" ?

I don't think that you have to worry, I see that too once in a while. Looks like a peer had a block with higher cumulative difficulty, the client is usually good in resolving micro-forks.
It's mostly forks of just 1-2 blocks

It is a new logging output. We use it to get an idea how well the network behaves and how many forks we (at least the observer) have in a while.

Those are additional debug messages used to diagnose various node failures.

Nodes are blacklisted when they misbehave, which means your node won't try to contact them again until the blacklist period ends (default is 10 minutes).  The most common cause is a peer which is down-level and is sending transactions that are no longer accepted.  Another cause is your clock is not synchronized with the network, causing your node to reject blocks/transactions because of a timestamp mismatch.

A hallmark error means your node doesn't accept the hallmark of the peer node, resulting in a weight of 0 being assigned to that peer.  The most common cause is the host name/address in the hallmark doesn't match the peer connection address.

Just updated from 3.x to this and it deleted my whole blockchain. I am downloading the blockchain now but when I try to go to the wallet, the connection simply times out. Can you not go to the main page and see the progress of the download in the API interface in the 4.x series?

http://localhost:7876/nxt?requestType=getState returns (among others) "numberOfBlocks" (which is currently around 332285)

I updated the official documentation to explain this, see: https://bitbucket.org/JeanLucPicard/nxt/issue/207
"To prevent minters from submitting the same mint request more than once, NXT peers maintain a counter per currency/account and make sure that this counter increases with every mint request. Since the counter is part of the hashed data this ensures that the same mint transaction is not accepted more than once. The mint worker takes care of increasing the counter with every mint, however, if you are minting the same currency from more than one machine, setup a different NXT account (i.e. passphrase) for each machine so that your mint counters won't overlap."

Seems like a disk or a disk driver problem, I think Java is simply echoing a Windows error message.

Also check your windows event log for error messages.

Thanks. So this post is somewhat inaccurate?

and the mint process stops.

Looks like you are greedy and mining with multiple instances at once.

True.

This happened the same with me, but I'm minting with one instance.

Just updated from 3.x to this and it deleted my whole blockchain. I am downloading the blockchain now but when I try to go to the wallet, the connection simply times out. Can you not go to the main page and see the progress of the download in the API interface in the 4.x series?

Things to try:
Did you get a message like "API$1.run: Started API server at 0.0.0.0:7876" in the console ?
Are you able to connect to port 7876 ?
Restart your browser, restart your node. If you still have a problem, look for either a JavaScript error in the browser or errors in the nxt.log and post them here.

Thanks. So this post is somewhat inaccurate?
...
and the mint process stops.

Currently the mint worker stops whenever the server sends an error response to a currencyMint transaction.
There are two reasonable errors that do not require stopping:
1. Non increasing counter
2. Duplicate mint transactions in a block

In 1.4.9 we'll make this behavior configurable so that by default the mint worker won't stop on error but keep hashing instead.

Try to disable the password manager you use in the browser. Some password managers pre-fill the hidden referenced transaction field, it is a known bug we need to fix.

Can't even do that... The blockchain is done downloading and still nothing as far as connecting to localhost goes. I keep getting a "connection was reset message" in Firefox... :(

....

Seems like a disk or a disk driver problem, I think Java is simply echoing a Windows error message.
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_programs/error-0x8007045d-the-request-could-not-be/17d085c8-bab4-4d31-9a2b-e7a4ba38d387
http://techchannel.radioshack.com/fix-o-device-error-1693.html

Also check your windows event log for error messages.
Thanks, layffe. That's what I was afraid of; there has been a couple of crashed reports due to a failed hard drive (bad sectors) to my computer lately. I'm afraid my HDD is simply dying. :<

Do the difficulty change everytime a coin is minted, or is it more?
What happen if the difficulty change when i'm minting? Do my hash is not accepted?

The checkpoint is achieved by calculating a checksum of all transactions up to and including that block, just like the previous two checkpoints we had. It is not achieved by the blacklisting of older versions, this blacklisting is just for performance reasons, not to waste resources feeding blocks and transactions to peers that cannot accept them anyway.

Yes, it can be said that it is a centralized checkpoint. It is more than 720 blocks in the past though, so this block is not going to change whether there is a checkpoint at it or not.

I have been thinking about this a little.

Kushti has proved (and no one has produced any counter evidence) that the long range attack (Kushti's definition: Long-range attack - attacker can start fork hundreds or thousands blocks behind current chain) isn't possible.

As you say, you put the checkpoint in after 720 blocks had passed so it was behind the decentralised rolling checkpoints.

So why put the second checkpoint in at all? 'Just in case', maybe similar to having two deadbolts on your door?

Thanks

Certainly an interesting case, always jumping back to the same block height.

Jean-Luc was mentioning something about a popoff API call in the changelog of release v1.4.0e
Quote
The popOff debug API now allows pop off of more than max rollback number of
blocks, triggering a full rescan in such case.
Would be interesting to know if this could solve your issue. Unfortunately I couldn't find out how to trigger it.
Input from devs welcome!

You were offline but forging, and forged 486 blocks during that time? Can you post the json of your last block for example, using getBlock or getBlocks from the /test page?

Kushti has proved (and no one has produced any counter evidence) that the long range attack (Kushti's definition: Long-range attack - attacker can start fork hundreds or thousands blocks behind current chain) isn't possible.

As you say, you put the checkpoint in after 720 blocks had passed so it was behind the decentralised rolling checkpoints.

So why put the second checkpoint in at all? 'Just in case', maybe similar to having two deadbolts on your door?
It is just in case indeed (and I have 4 locks on my door, not two). It is to prevent history rewriting attack where somebody buys no longer used early stakeholder accounts to build a complete alternative blockchain, regardless of what the theory says if such attack is possible or not.

A practical use of such checkpoint would be also if people provide for download a full copy of the blockchain, ending just before the checkpoint, then a node starting with such a copy and passing the checkpoint can be sure that blockchain is the same that other nodes running 1.4.8 or later use, up to the checkpoint at least. When downloading a compressed archive of the full database, a rescan is also needed if one wants to be sure that all tables containing account balances, assets and so on are populated correctly, but the checkpoint at least guarantees that the transactions up to it are the same.

Offline and not forging. But now i see in log that when i started client i forged a block in that process of syncing just at height 332641 ::)
I remember there was a bug of starting forging before full blockchain downloads, is it the case? ???
Can you post the json of your last block for example, using getBlock or getBlocks from the /test page?
I'l try to reproduce that state but no guarantee - i already successfully run another copy of client with full blockchain on that node :-\

The problem with starting forging before full blockchain download has been fixed, it should not longer interfere. But if you were not forging, where did this 486 block fork come from? This is why I wanted to look at the last few blocks, to check the difficulty and base target and see if it was the main chain or indeed a fork.

Hm...
Looks like it was correctly downloading blockchain while i was logged with "123" passphrase.
But when i logged with my >1m account i got:
Code: [Select]
2015-01-15 19:09:22 FINE: Account * started forging, deadline * seconds
2015-01-15 19:09:37 FINE: Account * generated block * at height 332761
2015-01-15 19:09:46 FINE: Found a peer with better difficulty
2015-01-15 19:09:48 FINE: Will process a fork of 446 blocks

At height 332315 I also have block 6710474410940538250. What block do you have at 332760, before the one you forged, if your node is still on that fork?

I got another two rollbacks:
Code: [Select]
2015-01-15 19:23:17 FINE: Pop off caused by peer *, blacklisting
2015-01-15 19:23:17 FINE: Rollback from 332760 to 332314
2015-01-15 19:29:01 FINE: Didn't accept any blocks, pushing back my previous blocks
2015-01-15 19:36:52 FINE: Found a peer with better difficulty
2015-01-15 19:36:53 FINE: Will process a fork of 446 blocks
2015-01-15 19:36:53 FINE: Rollback from 332761 to 332314
Dont know how to catch 332760 before it rollbacks, now it answers "errorDescription": "Incorrect \"height\""  ::)

If you set nxt.isOffline=true and restart, it will not connect to any peers and those blocks should remain in place, then you can try looking at 332760.

Hmm...
No, it not helped.
I added nxt.isOffline=true and restarted, but last block now is only 332432, 332433 already gives error.
Problem is how to freeze just at the moment before rollback ::)

(rough overview of progress)

Can't even do that... The blockchain is done downloading and still nothing as far as connecting to localhost goes. I keep getting a "connection was reset message" in Firefox... :(

So I fixed my own problem. I just deleted everything in my NXT folder (except my SSL certificate and my nxt.properties file) and unpacked the thing again... That worked.

Then I guess you've entered a different passphrase in the nxt.properties file? Extra whitespace? new line?

No. password its 100% correct i copy password from KeepassX to client work fine if i copy to nxt.properties i see password
correct. Maybe problem because i use in my password Upper Letters and Lower Letters and numbers and white spaces and minus and underline and Special Characters?

What do you think?

Your log definitely says you are trying to mint with NXT-XRE2-FWHQ-JLHL-3BH8P.  :-[
Yes, this may be because of special characters in passphrase :(

Yes! If use Special Characters or non english words. Minting dont work.

I opened new account with only Upper Letters, Lower Letters, and numbers and now work fine.

Update!

Problem not in Special Characters. Old password work fine to now! Problem in config after nxt.mint.unitsPerMint=1  I had spaces! After remove spaces work fine.

So minting dont work if you have not english words! And dont work if you have Extra spaces in any part of the config

So minting dont work if you have not english words!
[/quote

To be more exact, in case your passphrase includes non-ascii characters then you must make sure that the nxt.properties file encoding is identical to file encoding used by the Java.
You can see which file encoding is used by Java from the nxt.log or console message:
Nxt.logSystemProperties: file.encoding = UTF-8
The best approach is to save your nxt.properties file as UTF-8 and make sure Java is using UTF-8.
On Windows, you can work with Notepad++ to save the file as UTF-8 (Encoding menu -> Encode in UTF-8), if your Java runtime is not using UTF-8 by default, you can set it to UTF-8 by adding the -Dfile.encoding=UTF8 flag to the Java command.

Quote
And dont work if you have Extra spaces in any part of the config[/b]

This is something we can fix by trimming the the value of nxt.mint.unitsPerMint value.

I thought about the economics behind a MS currency.

And my conclusion is there is a need for another option when you create a coin. It's a limit in coin creation.

Because right now if I understood how it work, there is no fix amount of coin created/day that people compet against each other for (like traditional PoW coin) . Here, the more hash = the more coin are created, and the difficulty doesn't adjust proportionally.
It create a pressure too big on a coin, especially at the beginning.

My proposition is : give the possibility to choose a limit and a number of block. For exemple 100'000 coin /5000 block.
When 100'000 coin are minted , you have to wait for block 5'001 to mint again, then when 200'000 are reach, you have to wait for 10'001, etc...
Of course if the limit is not reach, people can always mint.

It think that's really important. That's the only way to make MS currency viable

There was fix in 1.4.17 that fixed a critical bug in older versions. Someone is still trying to exploit the bug in the stragglers that haven't updated.

Update to 1.4.17 NOW, to support the network.
