I took at look at run.bat that is part of 1.4.5 and it should work no matter what Java version is installed as long as java.exe is in the PATH.  java.exe used to be copied to the \Windows\system32 directory so it was always in the path but it looks like that has changed.  Instead, the Java installer sets up symlinks in \ProgramData\Oracle\Java\javapath to point to the current version.

Anyways, from a command prompt, see if 'java -version' returns the current version.  If you get a file not found error, then the Java executables need to be added to the PATH environment variable.

All this is over my head. I can handle downloading, extracting to my C drive, and picking out the run.bat file and double clicking on it. Then when I get the message that the NXT program has started successfully I open up my wallet. Since I'm involved in FIMK, I do know how to edit the run.bat file to account for the fact that my system runs Java 8.25 (or something like that) instead of 7, but I really hate to have to do that. In any case, that is as complicated as I want it to be. Even simpler than that would be better :)

EDIT: For what it's worth, even the part I am comfortable doing to open up my NXT NRS wallet is actually pretty complicated. It involves several steps, and I didn't even include things like waiting for the block chain to download, or how often there is a need to update--it's been on average every other week for the past two versions I think. There's actually a lot involved in simply running a NXT wallet, and I suspect those complications may be an obstacle to wider adoption.

Uninstalled NXT and tried to download  https://bitbucket.org/JeanLucPicard/nxt/downloads/nxt-client-1.4.5.zip
Now, I get a map with under 1MB data, with no wallet or what so ever, dunno, what to do.
Any idea?

Are you on OSX, Windows, or linux?

On windows.
Now, I tried with google chrome and I succeeded getting the wallet, allthough it's 2.0.0.
It's now downloading the blockchain.
I think, it's all a bit strange because I need the 1.4.5 wallet.
Can anyone explain this to me?

Thanks.

You probably downloaded your client from here: http://nxtra.org/nxt-wallet/ ?

This is a third party wallet (although the core is the same) done by wesleyh. He doesn't have enough spare time to upgrade it, that's why it is outdated (the version of this wallet is 2.0.0, but it contains the reference software version 1.3.1).

I suggest you download the software from this forum here (top of the page, written in blue). To start the client, you have to double-click on the "run.bat" file, and then open your web browser and type http://localhost:7876/

Hi,

Totally followed your instructions, this is what happens.
I did this, like you said me to do;
"I suggest you download the software from this forum here (top of the page, written in blue). "
In this NXT map I double click run.batch file, then I get a question if I want to extract( I think this is the right english word), I get the message in my own language.
So, I extracted, but the NXT-folder didn't change much on first sight.
Opening my browser and typing http://localhost:7876 brings me a blank page.

Sorry to bother you guys so much, but is really frustrating for non--technical people when getting a wallet is this difficult, it's for sure not gonna lead to worldwidth adoption.

Try changing your old folder. Add Old so NXT Old or whatever its called.
Create New Folder and extract to new folder called  NXT or something
then run bat file and goto http://localhost:7876  you will need to download the blockchain again but that's automatic
if all good you can delete your Old folder

Thta's exactly what I did. But extracting doesn't bring anything. Now I tried same process on another pc and double click run.batch brings up a dos-window running. Opening my browser and selecting http://localhost 7876 brings again white page.

This whole story has me busy over 24 hours now.
I am going to download http://nxtra.org/nxt-wallet/ again, get my 2000+unity, 2000 PANGEA and NXT out of the wallet to exchanges and come back here in a month to see how things work.

Or is this NOT going to work either because of NRS?

need to extract all to a folder on internal hard drive of computer
dont use numbers in file path
rightclick on nxt client folder you download extract all to new folder you created
(maybe you need a new extract tool?)
when all extracted goto your new folder  (not the downloaded one)
click on run.bat (may have to run as admin -right click to do this
keep this window open and goto http://localhost:7876/ in browser

wow this one was difficult.  the upgrade barfed on both my systems, the home win8.1 PC and the Debian VPS.  I saw the instructions to use -Xmx2048M and that fixed the issue on my win8.1 PC but not on the VPS.

kept deleting blockchain and rewriting the backup from 1.3.3 and it would update SQL tables and such and the 1st scan completed and the 2nd scan would always bomb on me at almost the end.  finally upgraded the java on the VPS and it got to the point where it wouldnt need to do the 1st scan since the SQL update was good but it kept bombing on the 2nd scan.  finally it did start up though not with all my blocks, but I let it catch itself up and im all back in business.

Thanks JLP again, heres to MS really kicking things off again.

On my 1G VPS, I had to perform the following steps to get it to upgrade from 1.3.5 to 1.4.5 without deleting the database:
1. In run.sh I added -mx800m flag (don't set this value higher since ones it exceeds your physical memory you'll have other problems)
2. In conf/nxt.properties added nxt.dbCacheKB=400000 to allow the internal DB to allocate larger cache.
3. Start the node and wait, the following message is displayed in the console: "Will update transaction_index column..." this can take a long time, perhaps 30 minutes. Once this is done wait for a full rescan of the blocks which should take another 30 minutes.
4. Once your node is up, stop it with Ctrl+C and let it compact the database.
5. Remove the configuration changes you made in 1. and 2. and restart your node.

I have suggestion for you. Is it possible to put also zipped database directory in bitbucket, when new version needs rescanning? We all trust Jean luc and new clients, so I think we all will trust database put for download from Jean Luc depository. It will make update progress more easy, when rescan of database is needed. Any thoughts?

DB is really big though, around 500-600 mb compared to the somewhere around 6mb normal size of the package it would just take forever to download the client, I'm working on providing a Jones DB included version, but trust is still an issue, I can at least provide the db files on jnxt, but its still a lot of bandwidth for such a large file, compressed or not.

I tried to rar nxt_db directory and it takes only 300 MB. Of course, if bitbucket has some limitations for size and bandwidth, then it is another story. But we must find trusted solution for possibility to download ready for new version database somehow. It took hours for me to update my public node on TV stick (had to run new client on my laptop Windows 7, copy rescanned database to TV stick).

Until we get a windows installer ready, it may be best to remove the links to Wesley's package which is still 1.3.1 based, and point all users to the nxt-client-1.4.5.zip package. What happens now is windows and mac users download the blockchain with 1.3.1, then get the notice to upgrade, and get stuck on the out of memory problem with the upgrade. Even if it happens to work on their system, it adds another hour of waiting for the upgrade to complete. It is better instead that new users start directly with 1.4.5 to download the blockchain and not encounter any of the upgrade problems.

We do have an installer project in the works, and this should be the next feature we release, at least it will not require a hard fork.

Anyone know when the V1.4.5 client will be available for windows to download? Currently looks like only Linux is available to download at nxt.org. Windows is still showing as V1.3.1

Using the upgrade button on my client didn't work (server crashed, same issue as others are having). Had to uninstall old client and now I can't get a new client so that equals no client, which sucks.

Thanks!

The Windows and Mac Clients will auto update to the newest Nxt version. We don't have a one-click installer for Linux. Check two posts above, will update once it's available.

I am very surprised that there is still no full chain for download after all these time, why  ???
Even if it would be 1 GB or more it would have saved me and others many hours of frustrating waiting.
Took me more then 12 hrs before it was done, while 1 GB would have taken me 1 hr or less to download.
Would also be good for new users to get them up and running fast instead of may hours or days...

A lot of QT wallets have the well known boostrap file, BTC download is "just" 25 GB.
Qora creates a fresh download of chain every 2 weeks.

NXT deserves a better solution then a complete re-downloading or converting chains for hours.
