- how much of this questions do we need to stop deterring new users from Nxt ? :

I just created a new account and it has zero NXT in it.  In order to send NXT to it, I need a public key which I can't get without sending an outgoing transaction which I can't do because I have no NXT.  How do I fix this circular problem?

There is no circular problem, it's an ingoing transaction that he needs (with pk announcement).

And could you tell people how to make this announcement ?

The warning in the client must be rephrased, the method is good but wording can not be understood buy newbies.

To activate your account you must now fund it with at least 1 nxt to your activation address:
NXT-37AY-456A-NSZ3-6TEEH38ca3d6298869ds7060fc8e013eaa305fc72843d149718dfd9fbfe2052161877
Once activated your NXT address will be: NXT-37TY-456A-NUZ3-6TEEH

This is clear enought for a newbie.

I have to agree that this have the merit to be very very simple. What is the main reason for against such a method?

Guys, I've been using a quite old NRS version mt the PC without any problems.
Now I'm trying 1.2.x versions but even though I get the "server started successfully" message, I cannot connect to the localhost, getting the following error.
Did I miss something on the release notes? Maybe a Java update?

HTTP ERROR: 403

Problem accessing /. Reason:

    Forbidden

1.1.6 works fine. Win7 64 bit, BTW, in case it mathers.

In v1.2.6 we disabled directory browsing and now attempting to browse a directory would return 403 error.
To start with, which URL are you typing inside the browser window ?

1. Please verify that the file index.html exists in your <NxtRoot>/html/ui folder (use \ if you are on Windows)
2. Make sure that you are using the file conf/nxt-default.properties from the installation and that your site specific changes are in conf/nxt.properties

If this does not resolve the problem please post your property files and I'll try to reproduce the problem.

When I connect to a remote server (eg via http://54.77.63.53:7876/index.html), am I right in thinking my secret phrase will be sent in clear over the internet? Or is the connection encrypted (eg as with https://), or does the client only send signed bytes?

(This arises from https://nxtforum.org/public-nodes-vpss/how-to-use-client-api-remotely/.)

Still same problem, even updated Java.

I'm just using the exact files from the offical release; extracting to a new folder and running the run.bat

http://hastebin.com/funequfaji.dos  In case it helps with anything

Edit: Same problem on my work PC as well. 1.1.3 works fine.
It's weird I'm experiencing the problem on 2 PC's whereas noone else experienced it :-) What am I missing?

Edit2: Extraced 1.2.7 to the same old folder and this time it worked on the work PC. I'll repeat the process at home PC.

To activate your account you must now fund it with at least 1 nxt to your activation address:

Once activated your NXT address will be: NXT-37TY-456A-NUZ3-6TEEH

This is clear enought for a newbie.

That is the best approach and explanation I have seen.

We were able to reproduce this problem on Windows when the nxt root folder name contains a combination of non-ascii characters and blanks.
What is your root folder (i.e. the folder into which you unzipped the nxt distribution) ?
Try unzipping into a simple folder name like c:\nxt and see if this fixes the problem.

Ahh, that might be the case, nice catch. It contained the symbol "ı".

Extracting to another folder seemed like to fix the problem :-)

Hey guys,

I set up a nxt faucet on my site when I spoke at the Texas Bitcoin Conference in march 2014:

http://prisonorfreedom.com/2014-texas-bitcoin-conference/

People are still going there to get started on nxt.

1.  Why am i getting this message when i try to send nxt to accounts, NXT-DTXT-HG5S-JWVB-23HZ9 and NXT-CFEK-JV62-79D4-65LMJ:

"The recipient account does not have a public key, meaning it has never had an outgoing transaction. The account has a balance of 3 NXT. To submit this request you must supply the recipient public key also."

2. Why won't the client accept the older format addresses without the NXT prefix?  Is that a setting in the client?

3.  @wesleyh - is there a feature in the client so i can insert multiple nxt addresses at once, enter a specific quantity to be sent to all addresses and send all the necessary nxt at once without having to manually send 4 nxt to each person like i'm doing right now.  it's taking up too much time for me to send nxt to every new user to activate their accounts.

4.  I like to make a new "how to" video to verify, download, n install nxt client.  How does a new user verify jean-luc' pgp signature? to make sure the new updates are not coming from a hacker?

thanks guys.
enjoy

@bitcoinpaul - lol

I am pleasantly surprised at the number of people who still visit my nxt faucet from my talk at the texas bitcoin conference in march.  Even more surprising is the wide diversity of people who are interested in nxt based on their titles on their fb profiles.

Enjoy!

"The recipient account does not have a public key, meaning it has never had an outgoing transaction. The account has a balance of 3 NXT. To submit this request you must supply the recipient public key also."

The new user has to provide their public key to initially fund their account.  This was implemented as a security precaution to prevent users' funds from being taken before they had a chance to publish their public key via an outgoing transaction.

Have new users supply you with their public key and NXT address.

2. Why won't the client accept the older format addresses without the NXT prefix?  Is that a setting in the client?

The RS format is enforced to prevent typos.

4.  I like to make a new "how to" video to verify, download, n install nxt client.  How does a new user verify jean-luc' pgp signature? to make sure the new updates are not coming from a hacker?

1 - Install GPG
2 - Download Jean Luc's PGP key from https://keyserver.pgp.com.  His key ID is 3BF9ED80.
3 - Verify his PGP key fingerprint is B88D C0A6 2ECD DDD1 643A  28FD CEF1 F4A9 FF2A 19FA  'gpg --fingerprint'
4 - Save his signed message to an .asc file.

Change log:

No longer allow creation of pre-DGS block transactions, and ignore such
transactions received from old version peers on a fork.

Improvements in exception handling, transaction validation, error logging.
Updated run.bat file. Blacklist unreachable peers on connection timeout.
Prevent server from starting if any of the startup tasks failed.

Added an optional "active" parameter to the getPeers API request. If true,
only active peers are returned (those in state CONNECTED or DISCONNECTED).

Avoid unnecessary DNS queries.

No longer process or return "comment" parameters in Asset Transfer.
