I managed to fix this, though I am unsure how.
Here's what I did:
- I modified the run.bat file to add the Xmx1024M parameter. That changed nothing.
- I executed run.bat directly, and it seemed to work. Back to GUI client, it did not.
- I checked the Nxt.log, but it contained lots of data. I erased it and ran the GUI again. It seemed to work.
- But I didn't want to download the whole blockchain again, so I copied over the db from before. And I got that message again.
- I fully uninstalled again, reinstalled, copied the db over again, and executed the batch file and let it run for quite some time. Then I quit it (Ctrl-C) and launched the GUI again.
- That changed: I got a window with some big ASCII text about a node. Wierd.
- I uninstalled again, then reinstalled a clean 1.3 version. It worked.
- I copied the db over again. Kept working.
- I updated through the GUI to 1.46. It worked.

That's wierd, cause that pretty much what I had done before and failed...

So, unless the problem somehow reappears, it seems to be fixed.
I have another computer running a clone of that VM that will undoubtedly have the same problem when I try to update, so I may learn more soon.

Thanks all for your support.

I don't know if this is related to your problem:

I'm using Nxt in a VM myself and had a not responding GUI here and then. The overall performance was very low. I looked at the VMs' settings and noticed that there was only 1 cpu core dedicated to the VM. Seems to be the default for VMWare, I can't remember that I changed that setting. After increasing to 2 cores it's much better now, the GUI is nearly as fast as on native desktop.

The windows version is now also updated:

New win and mac versions:

win sha256: 4c7d661036a590be46b8a04801910368d8085f3e5fa46443e232596dbfff75dc

Contains minting interface in the app itself and better shutdown of the app so no lingering processes remain (this was an issue sometimes for a subset of users).. Please test.

Minting on the Mac version works great. Having trouble with the latest windows build however. When I click on minting preferences, I see:

TypeError: Cannot read property 'length' of null

I am having this problem for a few weeks now, and it seems to be getting worse.
On Windows 7, Wesley's client, when I launch the client, it seems to be doing stuff for a little while (of varying duration), then shows the message "NRS server exited"
I click OK, and the client closes.
I used to think I needed to reboot to work around this issue, but it appears that I can relaunch the client right after that, over and over, up to the point it gets working.
This morning, it worked on the sixth attempt.

I talked to Ronny, from CCEDK. He has the same problem also.

Any idea?
If this problem spreads, it's going to look really bad for Nxt...

The problem with the Wesley client is that it masks everything that happens behind the scene. Therefore if something goes wrong we don't know what it is.
Let's do this:
1. Try to find where NXT is installed on your workstation (program files ? program files (x86) ?), then find the nxt.log in the root folder of NXT and post it here.
2. If you cannot find the log, install NXT from the zip distribution and try to reproduce the problem. Then post the nxt.log

^ This might be the same problem as mentioned by vladimirceman91 in this thread https://nxtforum.org/index.php?topic=340.msg156603#msg156603
Mentioning it just in case, debuggers might find more input there.

@lyaffe
I would prefer a much more lightweight installer, that basically only takes care of shortcuts and starting the download. This way the installer could be static for months even if you guys continue to release new NRS versions like crazy. It's all (download link and hash) in the blockchain, so it could be used straight from the beginning without the bundling. Just like DoM P I think the output from the server should be closer to the user. My idea is partially implemented here https://nxtforum.org/nxt-projects/nxtloader-v2-5-0-for-windows-net/ . I just tipped you a beer and hope that you have a quick look at it while you drink it.

There were plenty of them, I just uploaded the lastest one.

Thanks
