NRS server has exited
« on: January 03, 2015, 11:54:52 pm »

I've been trying to update to the new version for some time, to no avail.
Setup : Windows 7 in a VMware VM

First thing I did was to update through the client itself.
After failing at that, I completely uninstalled the client through the Control Panel
Then I reinstalled the new client.
That failed also, so I uninstalled again, and reinstalled the old client.
That worked, but I was still stuck with 1.3
This took a few days, and then a new client was available, so I donwloaded it and installed it.
Same thing.

Here's a screenshot of what I get.

Anyone has an idea?

check your ram on the vm. New update requires more then usual.  Otherwise download the main release and run via command line, will give more output.

The VM has 4 gigs of RAM, over 3 of which are available at launch time.
I would think that to be enough, don't you think?

What do you mean by "main release"? Just the NRS client ?
I downloaded the Windows client from here: http://nxt.org/

Not sure it's the same problem that I had, but I had to add:
-Xmx1024M
to the commandline(s) in the run.bat, otherwise Java cannot get/use/allocate/whatever enough memory or something like that :)

The whole run.bat looks like this:
Code: [Select]
@ECHO OFF

for %%X in (java.exe) do (set IS_JAVA_IN_PATH=%%~$PATH:X)

IF defined IS_JAVA_IN_PATH (
start "NXT NRS" java -Xmx1024M -cp classes;lib\*;conf nxt.Nxt
) ELSE (
IF EXIST "%PROGRAMFILES%\Java\jre7" (
start "NXT NRS" "%PROGRAMFILES%\Java\jre7\bin\java.exe" -Xmx1024M -cp classes;lib\*;conf nxt.Nxt
) ELSE (
IF EXIST "%PROGRAMFILES(X86)%\Java\jre7" (
start "NXT NRS" "%PROGRAMFILES(X86)%\Java\jre7\bin\java.exe" -Xmx1024M -cp classes;lib\*;conf nxt.Nxt
) ELSE (
ECHO Java software not found on your system. Please go to http://java.com/en/ to download a copy of Java.
PAUSE
)
)
)

I hope it helps!

I downloaded the Windows client from here: http://nxt.org/

Download the real nxt client here: https://nxtforum.org/nrs-releases/nrs-v1-4-6/

extract to directory. Open command line go to directory type run.bat
Look for errors.otherwise adjust the -Xmx1024M

The error described in the screen shot indicates that your Java process has crashed, there could be several reasons for this. As @bobthebuilder suggested the best thing to do is to install 1.4.6 from the zip then run it from the command line and observe the messages in the console window and nxt.log
Post the error message you are getting here.

Re: NRS server has exited
« Reply #6 on: January 04, 2015, 04:50:56 pm »

I managed to fix this, though I am unsure how.
Here's what I did:
- I modified the run.bat file to add the Xmx1024M parameter. That changed nothing.
- I executed run.bat directly, and it seemed to work. Back to GUI client, it did not.
- I checked the Nxt.log, but it contained lots of data. I erased it and ran the GUI again. It seemed to work.
- But I didn't want to download the whole blockchain again, so I copied over the db from before. And I got that message again.
- I fully uninstalled again, reinstalled, copied the db over again, and executed the batch file and let it run for quite some time. Then I quit it (Ctrl-C) and launched the GUI again.
- That changed: I got a window with some big ASCII text about a node. Wierd.
- I uninstalled again, then reinstalled a clean 1.3 version. It worked.
- I copied the db over again. Kept working.
- I updated through the GUI to 1.46. It worked.

That's wierd, cause that pretty much what I had done before and failed...

So, unless the problem somehow reappears, it seems to be fixed.
I have another computer running a clone of that VM that will undoubtedly have the same problem when I try to update, so I may learn more soon.

Thanks all for your support.

Wesley sent me new links, I updated them on Nxt.org. Can you try out the new ones? :)

Edit: Tried it myself. Can someone contact Wesley? He probably knows the answer.

Weird, no problems for me... Can you right click the app, show package contents. navigate to Contents/Resources/nxt and open nxt.log and see if there are any errors shown there (at the end of the file)?

That's happened to me numerous times...It was usually after I did an update to the client. I've went back to the regular download style though from Jean

What I usually ended up doing was a "Redownload Blockchain" in Settings tab. Where it then gets fixed. It takes long though...

When I see this:  Database may be already in use: "Locked by another process".
I typically have an orphaned java process and after killing all java processes Nxt NRS starts again.

I made a new version, mac only for now, that should deal with this behavior. If an orphaned process is detected it will offer to kill it for you so that you can continue.

You can download it here: https://bitbucket.org/nxt-wallet/nxt-wallet-mac/downloads/nxt-wallet-mac-2.1.0-nrs-1.4.7.zip

Windows version sometime next week.

Btw, I wouldn't mind to add some functionality to download a pre-made zip file of the Nxt db, seeing as the blockchain download now takes ages.. Would need it from a reputable source though, and one that has a lot of bandwidth available, plus no captcha or anything of the like..

You could create the zip and check the hash in your software after download. That way you could ask several node owners for hosting the download - all "without" risk, since "everybody" trusts you.
I would put a copy on my public node btw.
