Development Roadmap Update 2014-07-05
« on: July 05, 2014, 10:08:40 pm »

This is a summary of the development planning discussion we had today.

1. Release 1.2.1e will be scheduled in a few days, with bugfixes to DGS. After more testing, 1.2.2 should be ready for main net, planned for the week of July 14th. It will have DGS, Alias Transfer, and Encrypted Messages features set to be enabled about a week after the release, to give everyone time to upgrade. Therefore these features will go live before end of July.

2. In parallel with 1.2 bugfixes, JLP will finish the work on the 1.3 database persistence branch, which will have no new features and will be compatible with 1.2. After the release of 1.3, in August, both will be supported for some time while making sure 1.3 is stable and fixing any database related performance problems.

3. As 1.3 stabilizes, kushti will port his Voting System branch to also use database persistence, and merge it to what will become the 1.4 release. The 1.4 release will also have the AE dividends payments feature already mostly done by CfB, and possibly Smart Leasing, which ChuckOne will be working on.

4. The Monetary System branch will be delayed a bit as CfB plans to include Mixing (CoinShuffle) in it. The mixing will only work for Monetary System currencies, not for NXT payments. The MS branch needs to be reviewed by me, ported to use database persistence, and merged to the develop branch, to be expected no sooner than 1.5.

5. After MS, CfB will work on finishing Economic Clustering, Anti-Deflation, and the next steps to Transparent Forging, such as Time Warp.

6. After Smart Leasing, ChuckOne plans to focus on Atomic Cross-Chain Trading.

7. Kushti will work on blockchain pruning, improvements to Asset Exchange and DGS, and possibly helping with TF.

8. After the db work and managing the releases of the above features, I will look into Phasing, which includes Multisig Transactions and Escrow and is also related to the Atomic Cross-Chain Trading project.

9. The Instant Transactions proposal by Matt is still in the design phase, and is also related to Transparent Forging. ChuckOne would also assist with IT design.

@ JLP will there be any changes to Nxt fee structure in 1.3?

As I read somewhere that might be the case.

As I read somewhere that might be the case.

The lowering of fees needs to happen after the database changes, so it can't be in 1.2.0. I want to make placing an AE ask/bid order cheap, but shouldn't do it now because open orders are kept in memory at runtime. And other transaction types should have their fees proportional to the transaction size in bytes, but again what is cheap and what is expensive (speaking in terms of effect on memory or disk usage) will change once those get stored in the database instead of in memory.

Ideally, if we also get the Voting System working at the same time, I prefer to have a poll and have everyone interested vote on what the fees should be, rather than making an arbitrary decision.

Anti deflation, please explain? I'm quite fond of deflation, at least the never increasing money supply aspect.

Anti deflation, please explain? I'm quite fond of deflation, at least the never increasing money supply aspect.

Monetary System will allow to create currencies on top of Nxt. In the very beginning only basic operations like money transferring will be available for such subcurrencies. At some point (BCNext wanted this to happen when market capitalization of Nxt == capitalization of Bitcoin with 21'000'000 coins) the community will allow to use subcurrencies for all other things - trading assets on AE, buying goods on DGS, etc. This is supposed to slow down the deflation caused by limited supply of NXT. We don't need Antideflation* right now, but it's better to have it ready earlier than later, coz some non-revealed features of Nxt may lead to explosive growth of the userbase.

@JLP & CfB,

Blockchain scripting in general and AT in particular appears no where in the development road map, although the community sponsored AT project is ongoing for several months. Please share with us the core devs' position on this issue. Specifically, we would like to know the following:-

(a) Are you in favour of implementing scripting capabilities after you have developed what you think are the high priority features?
(b) Are you apprehensive of blockchain scripting in general or merely the proposed AT implementation?
(c) Since AT is  not part of your development plan, are you working on another implementation of scripting or is that totally not in the medium to long term plan?
(d) What is your opinion of Ethereum? Does Nxt need an equivalent capability or is that not in your interest or not a concern at all?

Thank you.

I think it is missing coz until now there wasn't any concrete testing. When AT is tested and a good plan is made how to implement it
into the core, then it will be added to the roadmap.

This cannot be the reason because features like Mixing (CoinShuffle), Economic Clustering, Anti-Deflation, Smart Leasing, Atomic Cross-Chain Trading, blockchain pruning, etc have not seen any testing either. In fact, development of AT has been more transparent and appears to be more advanced in the development cycle than the other features. Granted, they may be in fact be more advanced and already been tested by the devs, but for the community in general, we know very little of what's going on. Hence, I would still like to hear from the core devs their honest opinion on the questions raised.
