How? webrtc? it is what I am using....But you need turn and stun servers for signaling
I found some decent C code and have been integrating it into NXTsubatomic
cool thing is that I instantly got a chat system
It just needs a server for initial contact, the rest is peer to peer
I can always install the server side code on multiple servers to get redundancy.

thats great james..webrtc has a c++ api which i though you were using..The initial contact with ip and port number is the "signaling". I think even google provides some for free to use,  could be a solution temporarily:https://gist.github.com/zziuni/3741933

Maybe a bounty can be pledged to get people maintaing these redundant servers down the line

Its very lightweight. At some point I will release a headless NXTprotocol daemon. People running NXT nodes could install this and we will have plenty of redundancy

had a few bugs, but easy to fix and Ive already started adding enhancements. Just need to make sure it actually enables the peer to peer UDP
