Free MS plugin for online wallet
« on: February 07, 2017, 03:18:46 pm »

I am getting a hard time promoting my MS currency as people can not use an online wallet directly for currencies other than NXT without first buying the MS plugin. This is my suggestion if we want to take NXT a step further. Please make MS plugin free.It will help to bring more people to the platform and transaction fees will offset the cost of the plugin. I know one can download the nxt server and have all features free of charge but not many people want to install the server that constantly downloads the blockchain and need upgrading from time to time. Devs please consider this.

Hello,

note that the myNXT online wallet, as explained in other discussions, is not operated by the Nxt devs or the Nxt Foundation - it is a third party development, currently seriously understaffed, and so far it has needed the (small) plugin fees to help pay for basic operational costs. If the MS plugin fee is too expensive for some users, they should use the core Nxt Client in lite/roaming mode. It is free, you have all the Nxt features and does not require blockchain download.

Thanks for your reply. How do I set NXT client to lite/roaming mode? Or is that another version of the client?

The roaming client feature, enabled by default, makes the client immediately
usable by forwarding API requests that need the full blockchain to a randomly
chosen peer (remote node), selected to provide the openAPI service. As all html
and javascript files are still served locally and not from the remote host,
this is considerably safer than just using a remote node. Outgoing transactions
are also signed locally, never sending the secret phrase to the remote peer.

This roaming client (API Proxy) mode is used automatically while the blockchain
is still downloading, with a switch to full client mode once the download is
complete.
It can be disabled by setting nxt.enableAPIProxy=false in nxt.properties.
For openAPI nodes, the API proxy remains disabled, ignoring this setting. For
light clients, the API proxy is always enabled.

The light client feature, disabled by default, makes the node run in roaming
mode permanently, without downloading the blockchain at all. It can be enabled
by setting nxt.isLightClient=true.
Light clients are not advertised as providing openAPI service even if they do
have their API publicly accessible.

Thanks but I think this is going to scare a novice and put him off. I will have to advise fans of my currency to buy the MS plugin, though I am looking at this as a great obstacle on my way to popularize my currency :-\
