New forum?
« on: March 10, 2016, 07:57:05 am »

What you guys think of this new forum software?

http://forum.iotatoken.com/
https://forum.nem.io/

I like it very much. Home page you can see immediately all last active threads and nothing else.

Also like that it shows users active in that thread.

Visually it's also pleasing.

Seems it's the NXT step in forum software.

NodeBB has been for some time around, and recently it is getting more visibility. If the community prefers to move to a new forum environment, we can look into it. But we'd like to have a good amount of feedback before considering it.

Then there's the question if SMF can be completely migrated to NodeBB, completely meaning users, posts, personal messages and other details, which might be a good deal of work if a tested procedure does exist currently... because starting a new forum from scratch could backfire by scattering people and information sources even more.

I like it.
I just noticed that a lot of important posts get missed by people that do not use the "recent posts" in the bottom of the main page.

However, I do not like so much the minimalism in those forums. It is all white space...

I like the present forum, because it´s nice and clean and a lot of posts fit on the screen.
I hate the current trend of webdesign with lots of empty whitespace and big fonts, such a waste of space, very inefficient, you keep scrolling and scrolling and scrolling.

When already choosing a new forum or layout, how about looking at open-source forum software, where we can get our community and developers to integrate nice Nxt functions to it? :)
(maybe the forum sotware team will pick one of those up which would be great for Nxt aswell!)

I think current SMF is good.
But if with domain forum.nxt.org will be much better, this can strong the NXT.org and NXT Brand.
Can we forward nxtforum.org to forum.nxt.org?

I agree on moving to a second generation forum, fits Nxt better.  ;D

Responsive and a nice layout which goes with the new website is what I really miss now.

In the Nxt Style guide is a folder with SMF-Forum-Theme. I guess it looks like this:

I don't think this is something to vote on.

Just take the lead, create it, and convince others to come over.

Yes. Especially since there's no rush, because afaik this forum isn't broken at all.
Creating a new one will take lots of scarce time and effort, that's maybe better spent on other things.

It will only take time from those that feel motivated to realize it.

The rest can just judge the new forum and decide whether they like to switch or not.

Set up a new forum? What name? Where would you host it?
How about the old content? Will it split the users in two groups, those who switched and those who haven't?

I'm sorry, I think it's a really bad idea to do such a thing haphazardly if it's more than just a new skin over the current forum.

I agree, I'm only interested in the new skin part. But is it possible to just have the new skin here?

Is it possible to transfer posts, users and passwords to the new software and put it up here?

Would also be nice to have the applaud/spank thing  ;D

Maybe it's not worth the trouble but this forum looks somewhat dated compared to these newcomers.

NXT needs to stay on top, the new kid on the block.  ;)

Maybe I should set out a bounty?

I think someday we use the forum inside NXT client, and this web forum is only a skin which fetch all data from NXT blockchain.

And that's a big step. :)

You don't change a forum because of the skin (or the color..), you develop a new skin, choose the default one, and let the users change it.
There are many skin for SMF.

Choose one here : http://www.smfpacks.com/page/sa=themes and ask admins to integrate, It can become default but just let me choose to use the original one because I find this white boards too flashy for my tired eyes.

This is, in general, a very bad idea to migrate, like peter2516 said.
You need very strong reasons to do it, like functionalities that you really want and can not have otherwise because it is most of the time difficult, you will probably be missing old stuff and part of users will not like it. Old users do not like changes (perhaps because it shows them they do not control..)

Its probably feasible now with prunable messages + archive nodes + reading unconfirmed transactions. The problem is not in the data but in all the functionalities this client plugin must have.
On should start with available open source stuff then reconstruct how it works regarding the server side.
But I'm not convinced it will work very well, you will miss things that are not calculated by the nxt server (user stats, last messages no read..), your browser would have to do that = programation, and once you change browser or data size exeeded, it must be done again.
I think there could definitively be a chat, chanels and encrypted ones (isnt it what tty is doing ?), a plugin for it should be nice, you only have to take messages when the transaction is unconfirmed.

If everyone is happy with the features, it would be great if users could choose the skin they want to use.

And just bookmark these for quick access: :)

There are many skin for SMF.

Well, my motivation is mainly first impression to new users.

These forums of iota and nem look really good in my opinion.

Nxt forum first impression to me would be: oh my god. Where do I start?

Maybe cutting out 90% of all these subforums and consolidating them in a few big ones would be a great move already.

Another idea would be a new standard skin that fits with the nxt look.

So that it fits with the nxt nrs client, and the nxt.org website.

Maybe we do not make new software or plugins, we only make protocols, at least at first.

Just take building a NXTwitter on the NXT blockchain for examples:

Instead of building a whole new fancy website or software, we make a protocols:

1. messages sent to genesis account or him/herself is a public tweet.
2. unencrypted messages sent to other account is a @ reply and those encrypted is a direct message.
3. account alias as display name.

So right now the NXTwitter is already there. Anyone can build a website or plugins to show a fancy interface, and without them you still can tweet.

Then of course we need extra protocols to deal with favs and followers...

Maybe we can build a forum(or other applications on NXT blockchain) like the same way, I think this is better than building a fancy plugins at first and then everyone has to install it and then developers no longer maintain it and then somebody start building a new one from scratch.  ::)

No SSL installed.

Neat!   is there a possible way that you could automatically transfer all the accounts and posts from this forum to that one?

It should be possible: https://www.cms2cms.com/blog/smf-vs-bbpress-choose-migrate-infographic/

The only thing that I'm not convinced about is that also buddypress groups can be created with forums within, but that's not a full forum solution like bbpress or SMF. That makes me wonder what should be the scope of the site and anyway not sure if anyone does like it.
Probably it would be a solution to keep the forum still on the current platform (SMF), and we play a bit with buddypress on the site I did.
If there is enough people then I would definitely buy a domain, a ssl certificate and then performance is the other question. At the moment it's hosted at home on a Mac mini server that is not the most powerful one. There are a couple of available domains I like :)
Happy Easter!

Needless to say, new community sites are always good :)

A little update with plans for this forum. Since soon we need to migrate the server, that will be a good opportunity to do a few upgrades and a facelift. This means pushing SMF to the latest versions, and using a new forum theme (I heard the same people behind nxt.org are preparing it).

That will bring the layout to a more current design, also a good moment to simplify the front page further.

Concerning the current forum, that's good news! :)

http://nxt.thewiring.com is now https://nxtfolks.com :)
I've also installed an ssl certificate.
What is left is the performance. Of course it's not the fastest server so I guess that it will be overloaded when 5 people connect at the same time. :)
