Title: InstantDEX, formerly the secret project
Post by: jl777 on April 03, 2014, 09:29:37 am
The name of the secret project is InstantDEX

With the NXT AE people will be able to trade things, but there will be the blocktime to wait. 1 minute usually, but sometimes could be a lot more. Also 1 minute will feel like a really long time if the market is changing dramatically.

The goal of InstantDEX is to allow for realtime trading of any NXT asset against any other NXT asset (and NXT)
InstantDEX will be able to trade any asset, not just multigateway assets

I have achieved ~5 second times in my proof of concept, but that is not optimized, nor did it implement the full transaction cycle. Also, at these timeframes measuring a transaction really depends on if you count the time from you post a bid, it propagates, somebody immediately accepts it and the trade completes.
Or if you are measuring from when you accept an order on the books and it gets completed.

My goal is to do the former in the ~3 second timeframe. Initial versions will be slower. The multigateway will need to be trusted to redeem assets, but that is a trust level that I am assuming we will be operating with. Almost all of InstantDEX will be decentralized.

People with good internet connections will get better performance than people with bad internet connections.

funding has been completed for the secret project!

the only way to get shares now is to earn it or wait for it to appear on NXT AE

I have up to 1% allocated for beta testers, I will have sole discretion on who gets how many based on how useful your testing is

I am shooting for early, early, proof of concept prototype end of next week or the week after.

Some additions to announce to the secret project team: CfB is technical advisor, fanaticalfishing will be dealing with servers, also helping out is NXTminnow and allwelder.

I will leak some more info after I get multigateway into beta

Since testnet has been down, I was able to spend some quality time on this project.
Made some really good progress, but ran into some difficult issues. Not insurmountable, just requires a second (or third) pass with better and better approaches.

I will be going offline for a couple of days, so I will be able to think about this.

The good news is that even if I cant do better than what the proof of concept achieved, it will still be really cool.

James

P.S. Depending on testnet status and availability, end of month is looking like the target for initial external testing

Business Advisor: AdamLevine
Marketing: NXTminnow, joefox

servers: fanaticalfishing
funding: aldrin

Online just for a few minutes. What you are saying can already be done!
It is currently needing a recompile, but adding/subtracting a different NXTprotocol handler is as simple as adding one line of code. Assuming you have put everything about that handler into that file.

The following is a main.c that you can use to bypass needing to link with libwebsockets. I test with Xcode, then on Ubuntu command line before trying the libwebsockets version.

char dispstr[65536]; // handlers can write data here and it appears on the webpage instantly via websockets

#include "libwebsocketsglue.h" // includes stub handler
#include "multigateway.h"
#include "nodecoin.h"
#include "NXTmixer.h"
#include "secretproject.h"

int32_t main(int32_t argc, const char * argv[])
{
    init_NXTprotocol();
    register_NXT_handler("multigateway",mp,2,-1,multigateway_handler,GATEWAY_SIG,1,0,whitelist);
    // make sure all handlers are registered
    while ( 1 )
        sleep(1);
}

recompile libwebsockets, relaunch test-server (probably should rename it to something matching what it contains)

Now 127.0.0.1:7777/NXTprotocol will list the installed handlers:

Code: [Select]
{
"numhandlers": 3,
"handlers": [{
"name": "secret project",
"type": 2,
"subtype": -1,
"priority": 1,
"AMsig": "0xdededede"
}, {
"name": "multigateway",
"type": 2,
"subtype": -1,
"priority": 1,
"AMsig": "0xabcd1246",
"whitelist": ["423766016895692955", "12240549928875772593", "8279528579993996036"]
}, {
"name": "stub",
"type": -1,
"subtype": -1,
"priority": 1,
"AMsig": "0x99999999"
}]
}

Not exactly user friendly, but any developer can pick and choose what handlers to include and then make a release with an arbitrary set. Of course, someone with the time should probably come up with a process to enable runtime adding/subtracting of NXTprotocol handlers. For me, it is not a priority, but I guess something like that would be a NXT app store

If anybody wants to take that project on, I will gladly help them

This is why I want to make sure when I announce details, it will be achievable and people wont get upset by letdown from big expectations

If people want, I guess I can post the type of project it is with the general goals, but wont be able to guarantee full achievement of the performance goals.

If milestone are described togueter with a clear message right to it "at the moment this milestone is not garanty to be achieve". I think people will understand.

I think people will be more deceive if secret project is never disclose because it cannot be done. I mean I prefer transparency.  Now, it is like you said to community, I have a secret, but I don't tell you at the moment. That is not nice imo. In the first place, if you wanted to keep it secret, you should just have not said that you had a secret project. Im pretty sure you understand what I mean. Now everyone is eager to know what is going on! You are such a machine and everything you plan is awesome.

EDIT: I have to say I have enjoy all the .gif post here tho...

People with good internet connections will get better performance than people with bad internet connections.

considering that it has never been done before, it is hard to say for sure
When speed and Internet are involved, it is always pretty messy

InstantDEX will build on top of multigateway and NXT AE, so it is definitely already mostly done :)

The biggest risk factor is that the times in some cases wont be quite so fast, but I believe for most of the people most of the time, the speed will be quite acceptable. Propagating the orderbook globally in a decentralized way and then confirming the order again in a decentralized way and achieving these times is the challenge.

I have tested the orderbook propagation and so the order confirmation is a similar problem. Then there is the detail of the actual exchange,but there are many ways to skin that cat, multigateway escrow, AT, Phaser, etc.

InstantDEX

InstantDEX is a service built on top of Nxt’s Multigateway service and Nxt Asset Exchange and has been shown in a proof of concept to have achieved ~5 second transaction times prior to any optimization. The goal of InstantDEX is to allow for real time trading of any Nxt Asset against any other Nxt Asset, not just Multigateway assets, and also NXT itself.

After optimization, the goal is to achieve transactions in the ~3 second timeframe. The Multigateway will need to be trusted to redeem assets but almost all of InstantDEX will be decentralized. Due to the nature of the transactions, those with good internet connections will get better performance than those with bad internet connections. InstantDEX is still in development and the discussion thread can be found at here [link to this thread].

you need to add NXTsubatomic to InstantDEX!

InstantDEX is a realtime market where traders will be able to find other traders in a totally peer to peer decentralized manner. The NXT blockchain (at one per minute) is used to enter the InstantDEX market and from there you will be able to see the current orderbooks and find a trade to do.

Lets say you find a trade, but it is 5 seconds after the most recent block, so you will have to wait ~55 seconds to get the trade confirmed. However, it will take more than one block to get an escrow type of sequence in place, so while the trade was agreed to in realtime, settlement became pending until the deal was done.

I wasnt satisfied with this...

So, I did some research and in addition to being able to make some useful suggestions to jean-luc on enhancing the NXTcore to allow atomic transactions, I was able to figure out how to settle the trade at the 6 second mark!

That's NXTsubatomic. It is actually independent of pretty much everything, but by itself it is not so easy to setup as you need to tell it the exact trade parameters and the other party has to put in the identical (mirror image) trade parameters. Given a matched pair, NXTsubatomic will instantly setup a direct subatomic exchange of the specified crypto, directly from the crypto wallets. No middleman. No need to even make a deposit. No escrow. Just direct exchange with the other party.

It will be like in the movies where the bad guys are getting a money transfer and you see a progress bar as it completes. :) The actual time it will take to complete the subatomic is something I hope to find out today as I am about to finish debugging it. Have it almost working.

InstantDEX will be calling the NXTsubatomic to settle direct crypto to crypto trades. Things are still evolving so I am not sure of all the features InstantDEX will have at this point.

Just release NXTsubatomic, which is really not meant for direct use. It really needs something to push the matched orders into it. Hey! Thats exactly what InstantDEX will do :)

NXTsubatomic and NXTatomic are really just low level helper functions for things like InstantDEX and multigateway

InstantDEX will be issued and distributed on launch day, however there will be no official or unofficial IPO. There never was a public investment window to make sure that we avoid any regulatory issues. That being said I cannot control what people do with the InstantDEX they have. I expect that some people might put some up for sale on the AE, especially if there are bids. The only price point for InstantDEX to date is 7.5 NXT per InstantDEX asset.

There will be 1,000,000 InstantDEX issued.
jl777 30%
wesleyh 30%
aldrin 20%
consultants and advisors 9% (Come-from-Beyond, AdamLevine, fanaticalfishing, chanc3r, joefox, NXTminnow, allwelder)
InstantDEX working capital 11%

InstantDEX will generate revenues by charging 0.1% to 0.2% of transactions. If it is 0.2% to each side of the trade, that is a total of 0.4% of all trade volume. If InstantDEX is able to sustain a daily trade volume of 250 BTC -> 1 BTC/day of revenues.

InstantDEX will launch by supporting trading in multigateway assets, but it is asset agnostic and can be used for trading any NXT asset. Due to the tech not being completed yet, there is no launch date for InstantDEX. The main tech components are a UDP hole punching peer to peer comm system that enables not only realtime trade matching, but off blockchain nearly atomic trade settlements. Due to the differences in bitcoind forks (NXTsubatomic) and NXT transactions (NXTatomic), it is not clear yet if there is a way to directly connect the two types of trades. In that event multigateway services might be required. Also due to transaction malleability issues, it is not clear how many confirmations will be needed to be able to safely finalize trades.

InstantDEX will let people change their bid/ask without fees and only charge when a trade happens. The goal of InstantDEX is to provide a fully decentralized peer-to-peer realtime trustless trading environment. There is no guarantee that this ideal goal will be 100% achieved, but I will continue to innovate and improve the tech to get as close as possible. I believe that it is important to provide the market what the market wants, instead of forcing something against what the market wants. To that end, InstantDEX will allow for trading of any NXT asset, NXT, bitcoind crypto against each other. I will also test market using ripple IOU's for USD and CNY to see if such a proxy of a proxy will be acceptable for traders. If it is, then it will be fully integrated into InstantDEX

Wesleyh will work hard to make InstantDEX as easy to use as possible. Since we wont have large server expenses no matter how many active traders there are, our overhead will be the lowest in the industry. This will allow InstantDEX to have lower fees initially to gain marketshare. Exact specifics on fees are subject to change, with reasonable notice given to the customers.

It is expected that half the revenues will be distributed to InstantDEX holders, but probably not until there is an easy to use dividend mechanism. Exact distribution amounts and timing are subject to change. InstantDEX currently has over 1.5 million NXT 4383817337783094122 and I do not expect that we will need any additional capital to fund continued operations.

NXTsubatomic and NXTatomic will be part of InstantDEX. I believe both have no fundamental security issues, but due to the cutting edge nature of their implementation, it is possible for there to be incidents. We will of course do our best to avoid any such incidents, just a risk factor to keep in mind. Also, in the event that I or anybody else solves the BTC <-> NXT direct atomic exchange, I will of course integrate that tech into InstantDEX.

I cant make any promises about availability of InstantDEX, but if people posted their interest, that could help some of the holders to decide to put some up for sale.

@James,
Did instantDEX or Multigateway support XRP exchange?
not at first. At first I was considering just offering a manual ripple gateway service. I dont expect there will be so many people and it will be much less work to just accept ripple transfers and manually transfer NXT asset for it.

Maybe there are many in China that have rippleCN CNY IOU's. They could send them to multigateway ripple acct and get CNY NXT asset. Then when the CNY asset trades in the NXT AE, we will have an indirect NXT/CNY market. CNY withdrawals would work in the reverse. CNY assets are sent to multigateway acct and their ripple acct would get CNY IOU

I believe I have solved the evil forger attack. Kudos to mczarnek for pointing out this evil, evil scheme!
https://nxtforum.org/instant-transactions/instant-transaction-proposal-1089/msg20183/#msg20183

I think the worst that happens is that after an average of 30 seconds to the next block you find out that an instant tx was aborted, but atomicity is preserved. Meaning, the trade either happens or doesnt. Unless evil bob is around the trade will succeed and I felt that anybody with enough NXT to forge a decent number of blocks wouldnt bother with cheating, I still wanted to close the window on evil bob's fingers. In a different thread someone pointed out that leased forging changes the equation and indeed it does, if we have an evil leasepool operator all of a sudden it becomes believable that he would stoop to stealing from poor Alice.

I am glad to hear feedback on my solution as I am eager to finalize InstantDEX coding.

yes the dividends will be distributed via asset exchange automatically.
for example if BTC revenues are coming in, then you would get BTC assets, which you can redeem via multigateway or simply sell for NXT on AE

Pardon my skepticism, but this is starting to sound like ripple.  How decentralised is the final result?
direct peer to peer transactions is as decentralized as you can get!
I have solved most all of the design issues
Initially the only centralized part will be the UDP hole punching directory server. This is only there so that peers can find each other. All comms are fully encrypted, so once two peers can contact each other, no centralized server is needed.

Now some tx will be trading MGW assets and in that case it will be faster to just update the internal balances in the MGW server. You will have to trust the MGW server to redeem the assets anyway, so there is no additional trust required in this scenario. It will be possible to have an option to specify only doing peer to peer trading, but performance could be a bit slower in that case.

Not all of the details are finalized, but I am doing my best to avoid centralization. Not only is it the right thing to do, it minimizes the infrastructure costs required to run InstantDEX! So, both philosophical and profit motives drive toward full decentralization.

James

P.S. I have even figure out how to fully decentralize the UDP hole punch directory server, but it created some interaction bugs and since it is not germane to the core issue, I decided to do that after initial release. It really is a very lightweight process so no significant servers required. That is why I will be able to have each node be a directory server with just some additional synchronization packet traffic.

I give big discounts to early investors. 7.5 NXT was the big discounted price. There were small amounts sold at 10 NXT privately.The market opened at 15 NXT and has gone up from there.

also, each step (failure) eliminates the possibilities until all you are left with is a path to the solution.

Hi,

Can you post the Reed Solomon version of the Nxt address used to issue your asset on the AE? (The version that looks like NXT-sdfcdD-2Dwwe- etc etc )

This is now default in the NRS v1.1.3.

Could you post it here for me to pick up later >>> https://nxtforum.org/asset-exchange-62/asset-exchange-ipos-launch-day-listings!/

Thanks  ;D

I am just about finished with Lchain MGW, so then I can move to finalizing InstantDEX. During this time, the GUI has been making good progress and we are even close to getting a Windows version, but the GUI and Windows are different parts from the core part

InstantDEX channel in SuperNET slack will have the latest info

so what was he original price of this asset?

was it 7.5nxt each as James mentioned earlier or the initial price was set by whoever selling it on AE?
I give big discounts to early investors. 7.5 NXT was the big discounted price. There were small amounts sold at 10 NXT privately.The market opened at 15 NXT and has gone up from there.

Help, they have increased tenfold if thats the case!
I see they are worth $1.50 roughly now, i wish i knew about this asset earlier i would have bought a few!
