node - a computer speaking the Nxt Protocol as specified somewhere (wiki?, docu? I do not know)
forger - an account forging i.e. generating blocks
account - virtual entity within the Nxt Realm
peer - look it up in the dictionary; it means entities that are on equal level; we do not make words up here
client - fancy computer science term; means something like: a program with that somebody is able to interact with a system; here: a Nxt client is able to speak parts of the Nxt Protocol to ensure that the user can do what he wished to do with Nxt

I do write a lot of the wiki stuff, and I would update the terms, but like Daedelus I'm not clear enough on them to write it up.

For example in the client guide for the 'Peers' page I wrote:
"This area displays information about other nodes on the network that are processing transactions."

I'm now not sure if that is correct, as going by your above dictionary definition a peer could be someone who is not forging (acting as a node) but could just be using the client.

I came up with an idea to help get more nodes. We will be implementing the voting system soon so I suggested the idea of one vote per node rather than 1 per NXT or 1 per account. This would encourage more people to run nodes and thus help secure the NXT network. The discussion is here:

https://nxtforum.org/voting-system/1-vote-per-node-idea/

Let me know what you think there.

Nsc has incentivized running nodes. Payout is a little choppy now, but Ebby is working with someone on that. ;) I think if we can increase the value on NSC and make the payouts consistent, it will go a long way in encouraging people to bring up and maintain nodes.

I implemented UPnP for NFD.
IIrc the code is not touching any nxt core code, expect 2 lines in Nxt.java for init and shutdown call.
It should be very easy to transfer this change to NXT.
If required, I could also provide a patch.

I have been away a little while.

Has anyone made any progress on making it easier for non-techies to run nodes? Openshift etc?

So running your own node is still quite technical...

I can wait longer  :D

quite technical...
- hmmm.. If this 4 steps is "technical", then "yes"

1. Purchase VPS (for example 5$/mo DigitalOcean)
2. Download and install Java
3. Download and unzip NRS
4. Run run.sh

P.S. By no means I'm not a linux guy. But I managed to run my node since last december.
If you want, I can do that 4 steps for you, just PM me root password for your VPS (and change it later).

That sounds much simpler than I remember... can I try this?

1. Purchase VPS (for example 5$/mo DigitalOcean) Odroid
2. Download and install Java
3. Download and unzip NRS
4. Run run.sh

If it is a case of copying and running existing stuff, I think I can manage that. I was under the impression there were properties/system files etc. that needed to be edited, fine tuned and adjusted...

VPS (for example 5$/mo DigitalOcean) Odroid

- with VPS all your network questions have already resolved.  Not sure about the Odroid ...

Meanwhile, Feathercoin have a set of scripts to install full nodes on raspberry pi's. Could we mod this?
