There is a good chance we will be on cointelegraph soon, until then there is a very nice article on nxter about the event.

http://nxter.org/the-nxthacks-hackathon-2015/

Thanks to Robert for writing this up.
Jones, I noticed that that article recommends using your public node to get a list of API calls:

http://jnxt.org:7876/test

But I think your public node is still running version 1.5.9, which is missing the latest new API calls.

wow, didn't realize that there were that many new API requests, will need to update when I get to my server.

Status Update:

there is under a week until the hackathon takes place, and things are going well. We have 15 people currently on the mailing list, and 12 officially signed up for the event, which is a fairly good amount for a first edition of a hackathon at this point.

In this last week I'd like to try to pick up a few more developers to sign up if we can, and continue to keep up the enthusiasm for this event.

Thanks all for the support so far, we've gotten some good responses on Reddit, bitcointalk (until the thread was moved to altcoins..), and a wonderful article on nxter.

I got close on cointelegraph, but they ended up not publishing the piece, don't want to pay off coin desk for an article either.

I'll try again after the event to try to get some coverage on the apps that were made.

Look forward to maybe getting something published on nxter.org?

Always interested in more news and views.

Yeah, the first Nxter article about nxthacks was very good, I really like the website as a whole.

An hour and a half remains before the competition begins, last chance to sign up (you can still sign up during the event, but you have less time)

The first nxthacks hackathon has concluded.

We resulted in having 19 people sign up, and 6 people with enough energy and followthrough to be able to submit finished projects. These projects can be viewed at http://jnxt.org/nxthacks

Overall I am very happy with how the hackathon went, I will do a more in depth run down on everything after the voting has ended but overall it was a good effort that brought some cool apps into the world and inspired a few developers.

At this point the voting for who will take home the 1st 2nd and 3rd place prize money will take place, I have create an nxt poll for this, https://nxtportal.org/polls/8316013305858322997 the id of the poll being 8316013305858322997. This poll is open to everyone to go review the entries and cast their votes, but the results of the poll will not be conclusive, as we have to filter out spam and reach consensus with the donaters of the funds as well.

I hope you all contribute to the vote, its only 1 nxt to do so, and review these entries to the hackathon, they are all pretty cool.

Really well done Jones!!!

From now on, we should invest more funds in this kind of events instead of throwing money on ads on magazines and other conferences. Guys lets make our conferences and get paid!!!

So just to better understand, "the nxt-filegateway" project (http://files.nxtresource.com/) could potentially became a web hosting service on the block-chain? I could pay them instead of the "Canonical" ones? http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2424725,00.asp

Storing files on a blockchain is not practical and insanely expensive. It's hard to imagine this plugin can be used for anything meaningful.
What NXT needs is a plugin to access Sia and StorJ distributed file hosting platforms, beautiful upload, download, browse interfaces to these and automatic nxt->sia, nxt->storj conversion in the NXT client to pay the hosting fees.

Well I do think there are some cases in which it could be useful. For instance it could be used as a "proof of existence" type app which also allows to store and share the file. The hash will stay on the blockchain even after the tagged data has expired. As the name says it's just a gateway to make tagged data accessible via web browser.
Of course for full fletched decentralized storage it will be better to use a platform that was designed specifically for that purpose, instead of Nxt.

I am sorry I didn't mean to belittle your contribution. You're right there are some cases your plugin can be used. What do you think of coding a plugin to use Sia or Storj platforms?

No offence taken :)
I've never used Sia or Storj so can't say much about it. If they do what they advertise I guess it would be a worthwhile idea.

Thanks a million for this unforgettable weekend !!!

I survived my 1st hackathon :-) Out of the 48hours, I slept 2 times only 4, and was coding over 24 hours:
  • 1052 lines of Python:
api.py = 1 completely new module for abstracted access to the nxt API in python.
api_testing.py = accessing & testing the above; generating the Top44 of issuers, etc.
network.py = 1 completely new module for getting, selecting, formatting API results and transforming them into a network structure.
I used none of my existing modules, but built everything anew. (import urllib2, urllib, json, pprint, logging, time, threading, random, threading, pickle)

  • ... which created the 9 network.json files as an input for ...

  • a JavaScript that I needed to understand & adapt (thx to d3 = a cool viz tool); plus
9 webpages to hold (stepwise adapted & extended) copies of that script, that went into ...

  • 11 webpages, 1 css & 1 navigation (adapted template from dreamweaver), and 1 screenshot,
to then present the whole thing.

I finished and submitted ... 17 seconds before the countdown reached zero  ;)

When Jones then said the form stays open for latecomers, I executed my
spontaneous idea to hash all the Python code to later prove 'no changes'.

And shut down my computer. The following hours were pure enthusiasm.
I walked through the night moon forest at 5 a.m., actually singing out loud *lol*

And then I collapsed, I was so tired - I have only slept and recovered ever since.

I have had a quick look at the other 5 submitted projects. All cool, and useful!
Congrats to every participant! Wasn't that a one-of-a-kind experience?

And I have just discovered the voting. Great! -->

Code: [Select]

Your voice in the nxthacks 2015 - before height 495,997 cast your vote at poll 8316013305858322997:
NxtWallet --> Voting System --> Nxthacks Hackathon Voting --> Vote

I suggest to add that to your signature for 4 days? Thx!

You want to know what I have built? -->
Study my epic at http://altsheets.ddns.net/assetgraphs (new readme for the zip).

Please vote for me: "AltSheets" - thanks.

Two new threads related to my nxthacks participation

"AssetGraphs.py is born!" explains backgrounds, and paints possible futures for my project.

"AssetGraphs to Open Source - help me design a new asset" does what it says  ;-)

Thanks!

Open Source: chaincountdown.py

Some of you were sad that I did not put my Python sourcecode of AssetGraphs.py as OpenSource,
because then you cannot study my programming style. I well understand that.

That is why I decided now to put chaincountdown.py onto github.

Please do me a favour:

- please try to break it, try to find what is not working

- have a quick look at the "README-serverinstall.txt
(I am not a Linux superdooperadmin, what would you do differently?)

So * tattaa * here is my Python sourcecode, opened especially for you guys:

https://github.com/altsheets/chaincountdown

It is easy to start:

git clone https://github.com/altsheets/chaincountdown
cd chaincountdown
python server.py

 :)
