NxtHacks 2015 Hackathon is over, Winners Announced
« on: July 10, 2015, 06:16:37 pm »

--- new content

the website is now live and I added an introductory video, its a thing now :)

http://jnxt.org/nxthacks
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrL3WcReJyo

Now I need your help to spread this event to as wide an area as we can, try to get some developers interested, do those social media things I hear so much about.

Thanks all

----

I've been thinking about this for a few days now and I think it could work very well for nxt.

Generally I believe that the two things that Nxt could benefit most from right now are more developers, and a bit more exposure and recognition as a platform for building things on. This idea manages to do both in a fairly cost effective way.

Basically the idea is to round up a bunch of developers, and give them the nxt api, some guidance and inspiration (a slack-like chat to share ideas with maybe), and 48 or so hours to make something on top of nxt using whatever programming language they want to. Then the community tries out all of the entries and votes on the best, which wins some sort of prize, then a few other people win other prizes based on how good their projects were.

I would be willing to organize and run this event I just need a little help in two areas, one being a bit of prize money for the winners, and two being some help spreading the word and gathering developers who want to participate in the challenge.

I'm thinking somewhere around 10k/20k nxt for the winner and a few other k for runners up. I think it would be worth doing if were were able to attract around 10ish developers, though the more we can get the better.

Good idea.

NXTER.ORG will be happy to do what we can to help spread the word. We can also get the invitation translated if needed.
Hm, should be able to upload it to Copenhagen IT University intranet too.

I like this a lot, and I can say on behalf of Damelon (currently in his week of holidays) that he will support it 200%.

The front page of NxtInside, or the resources page (or anything, really) is at your disposal.

We can also promote a round of funding for this, and being ambitious 100K NXT shouldn't be that hard to reach.

thanks everyone, looks like everyone is positive about this so I will proceed.

I will find a good weekend a month or two from now to hold it, it will probably go from Friday on that week at midnight GMT+0, until Sunday at midnight UTC +0, as that allows most of the weekend to be used in most timezones.

I can handle the setup and running of the event, will make a splash page and countdown as soon as I can, along with a submission form once the event gets here and a place to hold all of the submissions.

Already got some Nxt pledged for the prize money, so I'm very grateful for that. As far as prizes go, feel free to make your own prize subcategories, (like the Jones Award, 100 Jay asset to my favorite submission), or you can pledge to the global prize pot that I will delegate along with the votes from people who review the submissions.

It's a great idea!
What is needed to make it happen?

The thing I need the most from the community is to spread the word once I get a date set and a page up, getting a big reach for this would be wonderful, lets try to convert as many btc and other developers to the nxt platform as we can.

At the moment I'm leaning toward 'NxtHacks' Hackathon 2015 as the official name for this.

when the SuperNET agents are available in the various languages (and documented) I want to host a hackathon with the various 2.0 platforms to see which ones are able to make the most useful solutions in the quick time.

even the bitcoin maximalists are welcome to submit a team(s) using only the bitcoin RPC

It is a good way to attract developers to try out a new platform, my initial idea was to have a hackathon on top of Jay once the new version was in beta, but I think nxt will benefit quite a bit from having a big one based on its api.

As far as dates are concerned, I am liking the 29th of July (Friday) to 2nd of August (Sunday) weekend so far.

Great idea, jones. I will probably participate.
If there's enough interest from developers, the community could even hold a Nxt / SuperNET related hackathon as a regular event. (Annually, monthly?)

I've posted it on reddit.com/r/cryptocurrency...(edit: and /r/Jobs4Crypto) if someone knows some good developer subs, that could be a good place to promote.

Retweeted also.

Good idea.
It can show the potential of NXT to developpers. All we need to do is to make them peek into it and that's a great way to do it.
I sent you a donation to be distributed to participants and winners

I guess so, haha.

I'm guessing it's some document root issues, which always seem to come up right when I go on a trip, once I get to somewhere I can ssh from I'll diagnose the problem.
