Results Of Cointropolis_JustaBit Issue
« on: June 26, 2014, 09:51:30 pm »

I had previously mentioned to the community that I could get computer forensics done on John's computer regarding the Cointropolis_Justabit issue and many community members did not feel it would would benefit anyone so I stopped any further research into this matter.

Sad, I thought this would actually happen... Now I will not trust John again.

Are you kidding me?

With Justabit weird behavior after the scam has occured (dissapearing), we should be looking MORE closely into this, not giving up.

I know you are doing for the good of the community and maybe many people try to dissuade you, but I, for one, would be really glad if that could happen.

I'm taking no stance on the events that recently unfolded..

BUT. I think it would be wise to go forward with the forensics simply to discover how it happened so we can all prevent another incident.

I haven't heard anything from him since that day. Smells fishy to me. That forensics examination could have at-least helped to salvage some of his reputation. That's a shame, for him, if he's innocent.

Unless Tai Zen has a friend/colleague who is willing to do this work for free, a full forensic audit of a hard drive can be quite costly.

If the community wants it done, I think the community should fund it.

A service provider like this one may be of use: https://sunera.com/internal-audit-services/forensic-fraud-auditing/

Where did you mention it? Is there a link? And what did you ask for it to go forward? Was there a price tag - and who was supposed to pay it?
Do we have any other new information about how this was done? Are we sure it was just the forums account?

If there was a reasonable price, I think John should have many reasons to pay, for his own sake, no? Just to know how it happened. To prevent it from happening again. To clear his name. And to possibly find the culprit. Maybe even get the money back.
Not to mention for the communities sake. There is some joint guilt in this.

The poor handling started with the hype, the unanswered questions (and snark when they were asked) - and it continues now. I wont go into it - and it's too early to draw final conclusions. But lots should change for future expos.

In my opinion there is enough prove that the scam was done with John's nxtforum and email account.
So logical conclusion from this is that it was John, but since he claims to have been on an airplane without internet.
(for which I would like to see the proof as well, ie that boarding ticket)

So it was either someone else who was given access to his email account or someone who stole access to his account.
Is there any proof there was a hacker?  :-\

So the only fact i know for sure is that it was done with John's email account...

Another detail the admins could verify is wether 'the hacker' first resetted the password before starting the scam, or if he immiedetly had access to his nxtforum account and later used the email account to be able to login again after other people reseted his password. Although this doesn't prove anything.

many community members did not feel it would would benefit
I would like a link of these posts to, since I can't imagine people not willing to find out what happened there...
Also if he got hacked by using a website which is commonly used umongst Nxters, who would be againt figuring this out?

I like the effort you do for Nxt, Thai Zen. I don't find that this is your responsibility to handle this.
It is up to John to have an incentive to clear up his name and thus logicaly be willing to help in this matter.
And up to the scammed persons to try to get some leads to where their money went, in order to redeem it.
Also up to community to try to avoid scams in the future by figuring out who is guilty here...

So I think the best way is to set up a fund where everyone can donate publicly and anonymous so that these computer forensics can get paid, maybe using anon136 as escrow so that if the required amount does not get met, he can send the funds back.

I personnaly doubt something will be found with the forensics, but who knows...

The cost of the computer forensics was not an issue.

This is the forensics consultant i was going to use:

https://www.linkedin.com/pub/john-minotti/29/b23/818

I have personally visited his forensics lab in the past and he specializes in training federal law enforcement to do computer and cell phone forensics.

He is a forensics consultant for:

http://www.accessdata.com/

http://www.whiteoaklabs.com/

His forensics analysis could be used in a court of law and would be independently peer reviewed and verified.

I am not a detective and have no desire or know how to pursue this matter any further.

Do we have the IP address of the poster who posted the scammy post?  Or did that go through TOR or something like that?  Using an ip address you could theoretically look up the location of the attacker, which could at least be suspicious.

Also does JustABit still have access to his own computer?  Could he be deleting evidence if guilty?  Not sure how much information could be gotten from such a investigation.. if he knows what he's doing at all, he's probably already deleted the majority of what could be gotten from such an attack.

Regarding him not posting since, I'm sure he's busy and it could be doesn't even have access to it or want to do anything with his nxtforum.org account that could potentially mess up an investigation.  Plus he has to consider the legal implications of anything he posts, especially regarding the incident.

Maybe a text analysis could be done to compare the scammy post to some of his other posts?

I find it suspicious that this incident happened just after John started asking for money for PayExpo and jefdiesel told him that he needed to start paying his own bills.

You can also get in-flight wifi.  So just because John was on the plane doesn't mean he couldn't have done this.

Anyone willing to implement google authenticator for this forum?

If we do it, it should be restricted version  with no auto reset by email (only manual reset by admin)

Agree with going forward with the investigation. Completely disagree with it being non beneficial for anyone, clearly you are wrong here. The stake is the reputation of multiple parties; John, Cointropolis, NXT 'community' itself (see what I did there?). And our faith in NXT (and humanity). :p

Lately, all I see within NXT is people screaming 'Give me moneeeeeyyy'
