I have been looking around more at some old threads. It seems 512 and even 256mb of ram is enough NXT, after some initial confusion (and assuming NXT makes similar demands as it did then).

So the Zero has more RAM than the Rasp 2 or the original raspberry that have already run Nxt.
Ebereon did a solar forging guide, that is now down, on or before Feb 2014. And below are the release dates of the Pis

So Ebereon must have done his guide with either a Pi 1A or 1B. Both of these have the same processor and number of cores as the Zero, but the Zero is 1Ghz, instead of 700Mhz.
So, I think the Pi Zero W will work for forge. This is all assuming that NXT hasn't significantly increased in power and processing demands since 2014. And I am not missing something about how NXT works.
