Sweden seems to be heading toward crypto currencies:
http://cointelegraph.com/news/115452/sweden-to-become-worlds-first-cashless-country

No, they seem to be headed to the worst possible system. The only positive is that, hopefully, experience with electronic fiat money could make transition to cryptocurrency less daunting.

Cashless society does not have to lead cryptocurrency adoption. I do however hope it will.
People here have a very high trust in government and government run institutions.
Most people I talk to is very sceptic about bitcoin and cryptocurrency since it's not "controlled by a national bank", and I usually get replies like
"bitcoin is only good for criminals. I have nothing to hide, so I use our national currency". There are some exceptions though.

Note: I live in Sweden.

Maybe. Unfortunately their reasons are very likely 1) surveillance and 2) charging you to use money.

Yet in the article there is something we must have one day, something like the Swish app but based on peggy / nubits / whatever is stable. This is what the unwashed masses need.

The Swish app is very smooth and user friendly.
My mom use it, that pretty much sums it up...

unfortunatly this is much worser than just surveillance. first goal is pure value extraction.

ZIRP->NIRP->?

there is an urgent need to cover the +500 trillion otc derivatives, major banks accumulated
over time, ready to implode just by smallest shakes. one reason, the fed doesn't hiked the
interest rate this summer, instead it seems they will initiate another hidden QE4/5...

banning cash allows your administration to create special one time taxes on your account on
demand (ofc only for systemically relevant | to big to fail structures ) all with a simple press on
a button and you can do absolutely nothing about it. without cash, there is no mass compatible
value transformation vehicle left. this gives administrations ofc much more tools at hand but the
value extraction is pretty urgent for them now. the rest will installed later.

here you have a nice visualization on the dimension we are talking about:
http://demonocracy.info/infographics/usa/derivatives/bank_exposure.html

ps: just for the relation. the nominal gross world product (GWP) is around 70 trillion.
those derivatives presents 5-10 years planet wide production value and the best is
'fully unregulated' based on virtual, externalized debt.

Interesting fact in this context is that sweden has a negative interest rate of -0.35%. By banning cash they prevent that people withdraw their money from the banks!

IMHO crypto currencies can even be useful without cash. I for example have never bought any cryptos for cash. Sure it's getting easier for them to ban cryptos then, but you could still trade other assets and things for crypto.

the NIRP (negative interest rate policy) you mentioned is used to 'motivate' people to convert savings into consumption, no matter how useless it is as long it keeps the boat afloat.
