Auction is planned after Rights Management feature. Coz this auction will be used to sell rights (on alias, for example).

I think Chuck is talking about auctioning an item on DGS. Which I agree with is a very good idea.

Auction on the blockchain (E.G. alias) is a slightly different ENFORCED auction, so that fits under RM.

Auctions are needed now more than ever and I believe should be designed like the voting system. I'd imagine you start by creating a "designator" which is a set of rules governing who can participate in the auction (for example "everyone", "asset X holders", etc).

Then you chose start and end block, starting bid and direction (normal or dutch)

Finally, you build an (optional) execution list like this:
* Winner receives N units of currency C
* Winner receives N units of asset A
* Winner receives alias L
* etc

Upon the creation of the auction, the system verifies ownership of the execution list items and locks them for the duration of the auction.

Upon the end of the action, the execution list (if supplied) is automatically interpreted and it's contents transferred to the winner.

Auctions are a good idea
although as mentioned above by cfb Rights Management is needed.
Rights management needs to be used as it is not necessarily a digital product that is sold but the right to use it.
For example if A has a game they want to sell.
They sell their game to B, now B owns all the rights to the game. But with rights management A could sell the right for B to play the game while A still owns the game so A could sell the game to C, D, etc.
Does this sound correct for the idea of Rights Management?
Is there any rights management associated with NXT now? as this discussion was a year ago.

Auctions should be independent of DGS, rights management (DRM) or any other current or planned NXT feature. Auctioning should be a core feature around which others could be built. Some auctions may not even involve digital goods or services.

There are not rights, right now. We are still in design phase. What we currently think which might be a good idea to have:

1) pre-defined rights on objects of the Nxt realm (like Alias, Assets, Currencies, etc.)
2) custom rights on real-world objects (like 'own good', 'may use' etc.)

I think auctions are somewhat gimmicky and niche (like MS?), and should not be a priority.
Raise your hand if you ever bought something at an online auction? :) I don't think I ever did.
Unless of course it's more of a technical requirement for some other feature...

But I think it's better to further develop the present features in the Marketplace, or anonymous voting, or develop much needed anonymity features like coin shuffling etc. Personally I really dislike have to strictly keep my public/private accounts separated for privacy reasons. Right now I go through BTC-E if I want to transfer some crypto from my private to my public account...

I have bought a few things via online auction, not just ebay.
Gimmicks may not be very good but do attract a certain customer base
