Lyaffe and Tosch are our people on standby for this event: http://hackco.in/

What would be VERY useful is some info that the coders there can look at to be inspired.

Please, take a bit of time to input some info that is helpful to people who want to code something simple for the Nxt blockchain in this doc:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1E1Zgdbrq04yvlNfTfGavvPQbTQRKLfhTXVXHm8-sEBY/edit

Just input what springs to mind for now, we'll clean it up during the coming days :)

Even a link is useful.

Don't forget to mention NXT+, http://fimkrypto.github.io/nxt-plus-site/, it's websocket interface allows for a lot of nice hacking.
We have a hosted version running on a pretty fast server, so no need to set anything up you can start hacking on it immediately.

Lots of samples here http://fimkchat.com/2015/03/connecting-to-fimk-websockets/ although the samples are for FIMKrypto network all you need to do is replace the websocket address with wss://cloud.mofowallet.org:7976/ws/ to point it to the NXT+ servers.

Edit: when on HTTP one could also use: ws://cloud.mofowallet.org:7976/ws/ (use protocol ws instead of wss)
Edit2: seeing that the documentation says NXT+ is based on 1.4.17, that is wrong, current version is based of 1.5.9

Some background info on websockets in general, might be a good starting point before diving into the hands on examples in the previous link.

What would be VERY useful is some info that the coders there can look at to be inspired.

Even a link is useful.

I cannot edit the google document directly, therefore I have just written it down.

Would be nice to have this as a starting point for further editing/improving and critics, so maybe in the next days we have a good summary to present. Well, in the end, most useful should be the wiki and the Nxt API page I think. These links should always be handed out :)
-----------------------

Description:

Nxt is considered a second-generation cryptocurrency. Inspired by Bitcoin but with a source code written from scratch, Nxt tries to take virtual currencies a step further than the Bitcoin Protocol does.
It provides built-in support for robust features such as a decentralized peer-to-peer exchange, voting system, messaging/chat, decentralized DNS, and options for instant transactions. Many Bitcoin-based currencies implement one or two of these features on top of the existing Bitcoin network. Nxt implements all of them on an improved network model that is built for speed and scale.
It is 100% proof of stake (PoS), versus the proof of work (PoW) mechanism the vast majority of other coins are based on.
The Proof-of-Stake algorithm is efficient enough to run on smartphones and small devices like the Raspberry Pi platform. In addition, this method effectively removes a large security risk inherent in most other coins: the issue of a 51% attack and many of the other vulnerabilities inherent to Proof-of-Work coins are gone.

The wiki contains most of the important information Nxt has to offer:
http://wiki.nxtcrypto.org/wiki/Main_Page

The API page is accessible when you have Nxt running:
http://localhost:7876/test

For testing purposes. Create a nxt/conf/nxt.properties file which contains "nxt.isTestnet=true" before starting Nxt. Access Nxt via http://localhost:6876/test and ask for some testNXT on the Forum or via Skype. The testNXT are distributed for free for testing purposes.

USE-CASES BASED ON TECHNOLOGY:

To understand the usecases, it makes sense to at first explain how the API interface is structured, from this structure the applications can be derived.
Nxt API provides managing of:

-Accounts
-Aliases
-The Asset Exchange
-Blockchain
-Digital Goods Store (Marketplace)
-Forging
-Peer & Server Information
-Encrypted and not-encrypted Messages
-Phasing
-Tokens
-Voting System
-Monetary System
-Tagged Data

Each of these structures provide unique handling of transactions, which makes a lot of applications easy to implement.

Much greatness.

I am a bit surprised that so little people find this exciting!

A group of coders who don't know Nxt, that do a Nxt hackathon! How can that not be a big step?

I would definitely like to see more of these :)
The more people we get involved, the better.

Thanks for organising this, guys and thanks to tosch, jones and lyaffe for supporting it!

I was also excited to see this event, during a Skype session with the participants I picked up 3 projects:
1. Intellectual property protection application - you reveal a secret key only if you get certain amount of NXT by a certain block or time - this was conceived and coded the same day by folks who never worked with NXT before.
2. KYC/AML application - store customer data in a non-reputable way then query this data based on role based authentication. We couldn't map this directly to any existing NXT feature, its something between messages, tagged data, perhaps aliases and smart contracts for the queries, not sure what they ended up doing.
3. http://bitnfc.org - their developer tried to implement the NXT interface into their existing Bitcoin app. The main challenge for bitnfc is to perform local signing on the smart phone.
I walked the developer through the local signing code in the NXT client. I think he was very impressed that this is performed by the default client. He said that its too complex to port this code to mobile in the 5 hours hackcoin so for now he just implemented a direct sendMoney API.

Was interesting to read the programmer's impression of NXT. Hackatrons seem the perfect way to introduce new programmers to NXT.
