how related are two accounts

Quantify how related are two accounts

Today I got a message from my "first buyer" (of my new AssetGraphs-v2 app), sending me his idea.
I am sharing it here, because the idea is quite general; and I am interested to read your opinion:

Quote
Hi AltSheetsDev!
Just a thought.
Did you consider a product (service) "..." ?
Somebody pays to your account some fee (say, 10 NXT) with two Nxt account numbers attached.
Then (s)he puts that tx id into a form on your site http://altsheets.ddns.net
Your site checks that tx, extracts two accounts attached, and shows simplified accounts... (graph) for that accounts, which reveal (or not reveal) the connection between that accounts.
Such information (about connection) is useful to reveal a various Sybil attack attempts, for example, in Coins Shuffling.
Good luck!

First of all: A clever idea. Thanks for sharing it with me. Yes, I am the right person to talk to :-)
And secondly, to immediately think of it as a buyable product - nice.

(But 10 NXT is only 6 cents now = it would need literally (tens of) thousands of users to refinance the work needed.)

Let me think ...

Motivation why

Quote

Ah, I see where that idea is coming from.

You want information if two accounts are
1 owned by the same person, or
2 two people from the same mafia/clique/group, or
3 previously unrelated

- right?

Connectivity by shared objects

There are ways to infer such connections from the blockchain.

Right now, my assetgraphs is API-downloading
  • assets
  • account of asset issuer
  • accounts of asset shareholders
  • aliases of accounts

But of course, all nxt objects can be used to infer connections between accounts. Or between assets. Or between other objects.

Possible strategy

The product you are suggesting would perhaps

* follow all possible links (asset ownership / issuance, monetarysystem, marketplace, ...)
* and then try to quantify the overlap between the 2 given accounts.

Then there are also types of interaction which would suggest, that it is two different people. e.g.
* Asset trades that have happened between those 2 accounts ... would suggest the accounts are different people, right?

An interesting coding project indeed.
However, to use it as a detector against attacks ... not very reliable.

Sybil attacker

The thing is that if someone wants to Sybil attack a system,
he is unlikely to create evidence that two accounts are linked in the first place.

If it was me designing a Sybil attack,
I would probably buy a lot of coins at bittrex (with their 7 million NXT account)
and send them to 20 unique fresh accounts.

And I would not buy assets (or anything else) with those 20 accounts.
And if I then participate in the attacked game - who could tell that my 20 accounts are all owned by me?

Network analysis would not be able to.

network distance calculator

Still, I like your idea, and very much. Reminds me of
* the old Erdoes number or
* the funnier and more pop culture ... Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon

When I continue developing,
I can think about a "network distance calculator",
between any two nodes in a given network.

Financing the Future

I would definitely want to keep working on my assetgraphs-v2 software

You can read here some of the many ideas I have with this project.

Right now I am puzzled by the ignorance about my fabulous pretty useful cool new toy.
You are one of the few who are noticing me at all.

Any idea how to sell more ... I'd be happy to learn.

Do you mind if I put this conversation public, into one of my threads?
Perhaps other people have ideas to add to this?
- yes, for sure!

And here, fellows, we have the main reason why NXT has been tanking for the last 8months:

Somebody presents an amazing and valuable idea and what do we see? ZERO replies...

Well despite the idea is nice it is having zero market. Hence low interest here. Some kind of general purpose account analyzer for all major cryptos with examples of successful usage could attract much more interest.

Hmmm...I like the idea of an account/blockchain analyser, especially one with a funky visual display.
I'll take a look.....

Yep, I also hate inactivity, but I don't know what to say either, the idea is cool, but as blackyblcak says: for what?
Would be nice to have it, like the assetgraphs, both really cool, sure someone can use it "maybe myself buy a copy one day if I can achieve do something which worth the use of it..."

Anyways, just posting to say that I really appreciate and respect so much people who work and build new things, if that helps :)

Thx for your nice words  ;)
Yes, I can only survive & continue, if I am earning.

As you are already a bit interested in AssetGraphs ...
... then send me a NXT address you want visualized

- and then I have a look if it makes sense in your case.

i think part of it is homegrown by moving discussions to slack. particularly supernet and its assets are doing an outstanding job in that regard.

i admire your dedication altsheets!
