Will Nxt network ever become saturated?
« on: March 03, 2015, 11:53:29 pm »

After doing some investing on the Asset Exchange I was thinking earlier: a lot of these services are going to be doing Tx on the Nxt block chain; some with some quite hefty regularity. I'm thinking of SuperNET and InstantDEX (when it appears).

So how much traffic can the current network handle? Is there still some length before it becomes saturated and slows down? Will it have to be redesigned into the Nxt 2.0 net (or Nxt 3.0, since Nxt is currently designated crypto 2.0 status)?

Or is it sophisticated to handle much, much more traffic than is currently broadcast?

From what I understand Nxt as it is right now cannot handle very many transactions per block at all.. But I think this is a soft limit put in place deliberately??? Perhaps until transparent forging was activated?? Not sure.

Hopefully it can scale up to more txs per block because my upcoming project will potentially start to increase volumes.

with current limits ~50 instantDEX trades per minute will saturate the NXT blockchain and also provide ~10% per year income for forging (regardless of account size).

Since this wont happen overnight, there will be time to increase the current limits and also activate such things as EC and TF to handle much larger tx loads.

I think if NXT is yielding around 10% per year, then this is a very attractive investment. so as the tx volumes go up, we can reduce the txfees to maintain the yield at 10% per year

Is it a case of simply running more nodes to increase Tx propogation and forging, or would a rewrite of the protocol be in order?

If it just needs more nodes then I'm guessing that the problem solves itself: greater adoption to Nxt=more Nxt nodes, even if most users will only be online temporarily whilst using their wallet.

Thanks for the answer. Seems like InstantDEX is still in the pipeline :D I hadn't heard much news recently so that's good to know.

I know TF=Transparent Forging but don't know how it works. What is EC?

Thanks.

P.S. jl777: if you're still reading can you explain SuperNET slack? I've got a small amount of SuperNET on AE but don't know what the slack system is and I'm interested.

Economic Clustering - some algorithmic magic that will make network resilient against > 50% attacks. It requires adoption by businesses, that's why it's "economic".
Slack - think of it like a chat, but much more chaotic. It's a website to discuss and cooperate SuperNET development.

slack is to IRC as NXT is to BTC

Brilliant example haha.

Its been a while since I looked at TF, but can someone explain how it increases the TPS? I understand that the next forger is known so transactions can go straight to them, however if the block time and capacity are still the same then we are still bound by the same TPS limit.

Wouldn't that mean that the next forger would create a block as soon as he gets enough transactions to fill one?  Then the block time would shorten?

Increasing the limit is not much of a problem. However, I don't see raising numbers of transactions per block. We still have empty blocks.
