For people with a mac
« on: February 06, 2016, 08:31:13 am »

Hey everyone,

At the nxt helpdesk we are getting a surprizing large amount of tickets regarding issues of NXT on mac.
I never knew there could be so many people using nxt that are mac enthusiasts :)

While I myself also have a few of these stylish machines, I've always had the impressing that (like with the iphone), you are somewhat tied to the appstore when wanting a smooth application installation experience.

So I'm putting my questions out there!
Dear mac enthusiasts!

  • Who are you
  • Why did you get a mac (did it come free with a box of cereal :D )
  • What is your overall experience with installation of software

And please enjoy this nice cat commercial! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4Sn91t1V4g

I have a mac.  About 4 of them.  I got a mac because they are of superior quality than most windows machines and I've been a mac guy since my Apple II+ with 16K of memory.

What I expect of software (any software) is to click on it and have it work as advertised.  This is what mac people expect.

I have downloaded the NXT blockchain more times than I can count.  I had 1.7.4 working well but 1.7.5 will not work.  It gets stuck on the screen that says ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY most of the time.

Talk about good timing:

Try that. It is working for me, on 10.11.3.

To quit, click the Cancel button at the bottom, then it will turn to Quit, and click it again. Still working on a better way to shut down.

This NXT wallet by PoofKnuckle works very well on my mac.  I highly recommend it to all mac users.  Note: you do have to download the Java Developers kit first.

Can be found here:
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk7-downloads-1880260.html

choose the Java SE Development Kit 7u79 and click on the download link for Mac OS X x64.

Why Java 7 and not Java 8?

I have no clue. It's just the one I downloaded. I imagine the 8 will probably work as well. I'm not much (at all) of a coder.

I use the nrs official release via command like and never had an issue. Sometimes is sucks up all my ram, which doesn't happen on other OS, but it works.
To answer to the first post, I have 1 Mac mini server from 2010, 1 MacBook Pro, 1 MacBook Air 11' and all of them have contributed now and then to the nxt network. :)

I've installed the nrs official release but I don't know how to open it from the NXT map it creates....

I don't know what you mean with the "NXT map". Here is how I do it:
When you download the official nrs, you get a zip that you unzip in your Download folder and you have a "nxt" subfolder. then you open the "terminal" that you can open from the spotlight search. Once you are in the terminal you should reach the "nxt" folder: most likely when opening the terminal you will be in your home directory (you can check that with command "pwd") so you can reach the nxt folder by running "cd Downloads/nxt".
Once you're there you can type "./run.sh" and you're client will start and you can open the wallet in the browser.
Hope this helps.

That can happen if you already have NRS running, for instance, if you started it from the command line and left it running.

In the "terminal" run the command "ps -ef | grep -i nxt". There should be something like "/user/bin/java.....nxt". If not then there should be no nxt process running
