nxt and good causes
« on: March 19, 2016, 03:50:45 pm »

Nxt wants to do good for world right?
Wants to get free publicity and new investors.

What about an option (boolean) besides the transaction fee where you can select to send a percentage of that fee to good causes.

These small fees are send to an address which holds the total amount of good causes fees.

Monthly there will be a vote where users can select their favorite good cause.
Based on the votes the percentages will be send to the good cause organisations.

Only thing is how do you know if the good causes have Real organisations behind them. You dont unless you get in contact with them.

Dont know if this is a stupid idea but wanted to post it to read your opinions.

No sense implementing this function.
If someone wants to donate to a "good cause", they can just donate. No need to shove a message on every modal.

Monthly there will be a vote where users can select their favorite good cause.
Based on the votes the percentages will be send to the good cause organisations.
This can be rigged extremely easily. Every whale will vote to donate to her own wallet. ;)

This reminds me of KindCoin: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1182234.0

But I don't think that Nxt should mix these things up: there are numerous possibilities to donate, no need to harcode this into a payment wallet. But make a plugin and let the users decide if they want to use it.

I have wondered about this kind of thing in the context of shuffling. With shuffling, you are going to end up with an amount of NXT in the recipient account that is too small to spend. There's not a lot you can then do with it. You can't send it back to the originating account without breaking privacy. You can't send it on to your next shuffling recipient without linking the two accounts and so breaking privacy. I reckon these small amounts will probably end up being abandoned.

An alternative is to donate them to some charity. Which one, though? The charity I pick reveals information about me. It reveals less information if more people donate to the same charity. So it might make some sense to have some big, community-sponsored, trusted, meta-charity that is made the obvious choice for everyone to donate to.

I'm not talking about a protocol change here. More of a PR and organisational initiative. It would declare a list of other charities that it would donate the funds it receives to, and in what proportion. Probably these would include NXT community chests for things like development and marketing, as well as conventional charities like Oxfam. The list would be updating by voting. I think it should be vote by asset, with the money paid for the assets going into the pot, but once you have the asset you don't have to pay for future votes. Having to pay for the asset would reduce rigging, but also whoever runs the charity would vet the recipients. I don't see this as a trust-free fund.

Which raises the question of who should administer it. Most of the people who are respected and trusted in this community are already busy. I'm too busy to do it myself, and probably don't have the standing anyway. And frankly, it is probably too early to do this now. The problem doesn't exist yet. There aren't enough people shuffling and finding themselves with unspendable residues. So I am throwing the idea out there now, thinking maybe someone will remember it in a few years when it becomes more relevant.

Googling "bitcoin charity" gives out 400k results. When NXT is mainstream, it won't be any problem with donating to a random charity. I don't think there is a need for any centralized solution.

Personally I think there is little difference between burning [abandoning] money and giving it away - in both cases you're giving your money away - in 1'st case to everyone in the economy, in 2'd case to charity recipients and owners. Option 1 isn't bad - look at how charitable some of the richest people are.

As a decentralized, technical solution to this problem I can imagine a plugin that allows you to send all your remaining money to a random charity from a predetermined list. Don't like *Autism Speaks? Just remove them from your list. This way there will be no voting and randomness will make donations anonymous.

* Included an example of a generally recognized evil "charity".

I actually had the same idea about shuffling leftovers. Indeed, if you shuffle more than once, there is often a tiny amount left in the intermediate account which you can't use for anything. Perhaps donate those to the Nxt Foundation? If this becomes the accepted default for disposing of such small change, it will not reveal information about who the sender might be.

This was done in the past.
No one deserves donations more than the creators of the software you're using right now. [Provided that the feature is opt-in.]
