Why not make use of the NXT testnet? :D there you can test to your heart's content with 0 worries.

Thanks, I have been using testnet for several months.. but there is only so much testing I can achieve on my own.. its time to put the big boy pants on and hit the real world :)

I would like to see lots of real world ads indexed within BoatNET anyway, so I don't see this as a wasted exercise.

yeah! i like boats, sailboats to be more precise.
using blockchain for premiums like boats, real estate etc. is a very good idea slothbag.

let me add some thoughs here, perhaps they are usefull for BoatNET/EstateNET.

starting this, you will run into the classical checken-egg problem. without content no users, without
users no content, so first you need content for free, without users. placing the software and waiting
it will fills up doesn't work.

you have several approaches for an initial fill up.

1. brokers

you need access to yacht brokers listings, adding whole batches at once into BoatNet, making it alive.
moreover, you don't need much brokers, because as soon you have some good ones the others are far more
easy to convince due to competitive advantage they don't want miss too.

the interesting thing is, that those tiny listings costs are not the real problem here, they are always
looking for additonal sales channels but the work (manpower/time) to add theirs listings into the system
(same is valid for realtors btw). they are just to lazy and busy to maintain another listing service.
so you need to offer a listing import/export service to them. the problem here, compared to realtors,
is, that they mostly use customized software and they don't integrate or do inhouse exports just for you.

solution: offer them an auto-update from portals they are already in and code a html-scraper to extract
their listings for free to start, 'with' their confirmed permission. if you are not in the hurry, this
approach is the best, because after a while, they will see your service as a normal/usual sales channel
and since they don't know exactly from which channels contacts/sales are made over time, they will
continue to pay and support all of them, yours included.

2. web portals

teaming up with an existing portal to get access to all listings might work also. even if they tend to
see you as an compititor the second line (don't expect the bigger ones will welcome you) could be
interested because they could sell thier brokers your service as an additional, very innovative
sales channel. this would give some competitive advantage in arguing with their brokers to place
listings with them. it's worth a try because this way you would get tons of listings with a simple
db dump/export.

3. ninja scraper

not really recommended but doable just for the start. some brokers don't care very much and could
accept a free sales channel if they would see this but many wouldn't be happy simple due to data
updates. e.g. if you show a vessel with an old data/image/price due to update lags you are in trouble.

additional, boat related listings or groups you can target.

1. manufacturers
2. charter
3. moorings
4. equipment

charter would be a very good one. the data doesn't change much and they have big profit margins.

finaly, i think PremiumNET is a great idea and should be supported a little by fundings from nxt committees.
( assuming slothbag need/accept support )

nxt would look good in the media, providing a marketplace for high pricing luxury products.

Firstly, thanks Nexern for the great feedback.

Funny you should mention real estate because that is my real target, I initially chose Boats cause I like boats and it is a good testing ground but eventually real estate is where the big action is :)

I'm at the stage right now where the software is still not ready to be mass marketed, so i'm not looking to get thousands of ads just yet.  But you are right, the chicken and the egg problem is going to be tricky.  You probably saw a few posts back I am offering NXT rewards to those willing to (option 3) ninja scrape adverts into BoatNET, this should accomplish two things, 1. to test the software on a few more platforms and usage patterns, 2. To get a couple hundred of ads in the system just to test the scalability and prove its a viable system.

Once I am more confident that the system is running smoothly I will be approaching local brokers to see if I can get some on board.  It is a good point you make about time vs fees, one of the revenue models for me will be ad publishing on behalf of users that cant be bothered to do it/use Nxt.

These are great suggestions, I will have a think about how to integrate those items into BoatNET.

I am looking for funding as its all been self funded so far but I cant keep it up indefinitely, so i'm receptive to the idea :)

I just posted a short article about DApps in general and a brief mention of Nxt as a great platform for launching future DApps.

Give it the retweet treatment if you like :)

For those that are curious to click around the interface but couldn't be bothered to install the app, I have made a publicly hosted UI that anyone can access.

http://boatnet.dappcentral.com/

The cool thing about this is I have not made any changes to the application, I am simply doing an apache proxypass to the app interface on port 2628.  So it is exactly as if you installed and ran the client locally (except all the admin stuff is blocked).

Anyone can host this interface, and in the future I hope many people will.

Its also important to remember that if you do publish an ad, all the tx signing is done client side in the browser, your secret phrase never leaves the browser.  You can right click "View source" to verify.
