Promotional Offer: In order to start minting a coin you need to have nxt in your wallet account. The Elements team will help new users to be part of our community by sending a small amount of nxt to any new user that wants to start minting. Please post here your account number and your public key.

SPECS

NXT BASED
Total Supply: 84 000 000 ELEMS
Minimum Difficulty: 10
Maximum Dificulty: 150
Minting Algorithm: Scrypt
No IPO
No Premine

DESCRIPTION

Elements (ELEMS) is the first MS coin using Scrypt Algorithm and the first MS coin that people start minting. ELEMS had no initial supply (pre-mining). We believe in fair distribution. how do i mint ELEMS?

Added Update to the main post:

Update1: How do I mine ELEMS:

According to Nxt minting wiki:

1.Locate nxt-default.properties file in nxt-client-1.4.7.1\nxt\conf folder
2.Copy paste this file and rename it to nxt.properties
3. Open the file, locate the parameter below and change them accordingly:

nxt.mint.serverAddress - the address of the NXT peer accepting the transactions. Defaults to "localhost".

nxt.mint.currencyCode - specifies the monetary system currency code of the currency to mint.

nxt.mint.secretPhrase - secret phrase of the account to which the new currency units are granted. This secret phrase is submitted to the peer with each mint transaction.

nxt.mint.unitsPerMint - specifies the number of units per mint for each mint transaction. This is the number of units credited to the minter account, however, minting difficulty increases linearly with the number of units, therefore small minters should define small number of units and large minters a larger number [default: 1 whole unit per mint] This field accepts decimal positions according to the currency decimals.

nxt.mint.threadPoolSize - number of threads used for hashing [default: 1 thread per CPU core]

nxt.mint.initialNonce - by default (or when setting the value to 0) the initial nonce is chosen randomly and increased by one on every hash calculation. Set this value when you like the hashing process to work deterministically, for example for testing purposes.

nxt.mint.isSubmitted - by default the mint worker does not actually submit the minting transaction. To submit the transactions automatically whenever a hash is solved set this value to true. Refer to the best practices section below.

Example:

nxt.mint.serverAddress=localhost
nxt.mint.currencyCode=ELEMS
nxt.mint.secretPhrase=your passphrase
nxt.mint.unitsPerMint=1
nxt.mint.threadPoolSize=1
nxt.mint.initialNonce=0
nxt.mint.isSubmitted=true

Runtime

To execute the mint worker follow these steps:

1.Install NXT
2.Configure the mint parameters as explained above
3.Start the NXT node and update the blockchain
4.Once the node is started launch the mint worker by running mint.sh on Unix or mint.bat on Windows
5.The mint worker connects to the NXT node specified by the nxt.mint.serverAddress setting, to retrieve the minting parameters and submit the solution nonce.

Additional Best practices

Never set the isSubmitted flag to true unless you are absolutely sure what's you are doing. You may end up paying a lot of fees and spamming the blockchain.

Always start by minting 1 unit per mint and observe the log messages printed by the mint worker. Look at the hash rate and the number of seconds per transaction. Adjust the nxt.mint.unitsPerMint setting so that the mint worker solves no more than one hash per hour, but also consider that a single transaction cannot mint more than 1/10000 of the total unit supply.

Update 2 :
2.09 ELEMS already mined!

By looking all the other POW coins, ELEMS is the first coin that people start to mine. Thank you!

The first Exchange Request for ELEMS is live:   500nxt for 1 ELEMS

*This is close to the price of LTC before the big drop that happens the last 2-3 weeks. ELEMS and LTC have both the same amount of total coins: 84 millions.

Try opening a new account and letting the Nxt client choose a passphrase for you.  You can then copy and paste this passphrase into your config file for miniting.  Remember to fund your new account before you start minting as each successful mint op costs 1 NXT.

Probably not, this is just the info, that your computer verified/spent 1 MHash of its power for minting ;-)

Can someone confirm if minting also applicable to an account with an effective balance of 0?

Forging requires that the account must have gotten 1440 blocks confirmations, or approximately a day old. But does this restriction also apply to minting? =/

By the way, there is 0 result when trying to find a currency with the code ELEMS on the currencies list. What gives?

I atm have an effective balance of 0 although have 10k in NXT right now along with a lot of NXT in assets (I buy and sell a lot of assets :P). Still have been able to mint 1 ELEMS so far. (it takes 1 NXT away per mint from your account)

Thanks for the confirmation, wakasaki. I would suggest you to mint from an account that has a low balance; or that has an amount of NXT you are willing to lose because WHEN MINTING THE PASSPHRASE OF THE MINTING ACCOUNT IS SENT TO THE HOST. Please, let this be read by all minters! Happy minting everyone! :)

Oh, I still can't find ELEMS on the list of currencies. Am I missing something? Nevermind, found it now, currency ID is 7035962084481354251 :)

Aaaand I just minted 1 ELEMS. Nice... :D

Tha last row is probably really 0.01NXT per 1 ELEMS, not 100NXT per ELEMS, as you suggested before. And I probably suspect, why -- if you want to create sell exchange offer, the system cry, that "is necessary to input buy rate per unit", or something like this. So, if you want to create sell offer, you probably have to also create buy offer (it's bug or feature??), so, if somebody wants to sell only, he has to create some "pointless" buy order so that no one is using it.

How much Nxt do you pay for 1 ELEMS? :)

The first Exchange Request for ELEMS is live:   500nxt for 1 ELEMS

*This is close to the price of LTC before the big drop that happens the last 2-3 weeks. ELEMS and LTC have both the same amount of total coins: 84 millions.

Where can I see this exchange request ? I just see :

Offers to Exchange NXT for ELEMS
Height    Account    Units    Limit    Rate
330108   NXT-L32A-SP75-LNQZ-8V89Y   1   1   1
330118   NXT-3FAT-YTFM-7GAB-9HHS9   1   1   0.01

This whole system is new to everyone, maybe someone from the development team can enlighten us.

Yes you are right. I change my post and delete this part, because it didn't make sense! :)

yes as long as the cmd doesn't force close or give an error. It is minting.  :)

Well, I am minting right now.
Where can I see how much I mint so far?

I think you can go to the "Monetary System" tab -> "Currencies" -> and top right should be a tab that says "My Currencies" which will show what you have got so far.

Also in the mint.bat there should be a notification with a lot of text that comes up when you mint something.

I really feel that it would be helpful to have a "Currency" tab on the Dashboard with the rest of the "Account Balance", "Assets", "Messages", and "Blocks" :P

Yes, it shows many comments in the cmd when you minted. I just minted 1. and it also takes away 1 nxt from your account. So guys, in order to mint you do need nxt in your minting account. Please take note! So i am able to mint 1 every 50 minutes or so now.

P.s how do you calculate cost per minting in this way? we can roughly estimate what is the price per coin in a way right?

The same for me. The minting procedure continues intact.  If you have already mint something you can find the coin in "My currencies". Also the coin appears in the "Exchange Booth". Please can anyone from the development team inform us if this is a bug? Any other coins that have the same problem?

Yeah can find it in "My Currencies" just not when searching All currencies. Im guessing its a bug. The system is still new so bugs are likely to show up.

One doubt... should I set nxt.mint.isSubmitted=false o =true?
In nxt wiki they say: Never set the isSubmitted flag to true unless you are absolutely sure what's you are doing. You may end up paying a lot of fees and spamming the blockchain.
But if it is set as false my understanding tells me that although I found a solution it isn't submitted, so I will be solving solutions for nothing...

PD: I already minted 1 elem with it set to true and received one message when it was as false telling me that a solution was found but wasn't submitted :S

I believe set it to true if you want to actually keep what you mint. OR false if you want to test out the rate that you mint before you actually mint. Or something like that.  :)

Wakasaki808 is right. You can also play with this value: nxt.mint.unitsPerMint=1 , if you have a slower cpu smaller values  than 1 is better, but first test it with isSubmitted flag set to false. With nxt.mint.unitsPerMint=1 you will receive 1ELEMS and pay 1nxt fee. The price of ELEMS is community driven so nobody wants to sell below 1 nxt. Chances are that nobody also want to sell 0.1ELEMS for 1 nxt so if you have a slower cpu you can have nxt.mint.unitsPerMint=0.5 for example. At the moment the lowest ratio for ELEMS/NXT exchange was 99Nxt per 1ELEMS.

Makes sense, thanks  ;)
So I suppose that I will never find a "false positive" right? I mean, like could happen in bitcoin that two miners find a block in the same time and one is rejected (because here we haven't got own blocks...)
I would like a more complete explanation in "not code" version to understand how the mining here works.... in nxt wiki says that no more than one transaction/account each block, so... can I have a queue of many minted coins waiting to be confirmed? If this is true, a very powerful miner can mine a lot of currencys in the begining with low difficulty and then subbmit the results once he have accumulated many coins "unconfirmed" with low difficulty

As a workaround to find ELEMS until we fix the search facility in the currency table, you can open the exchange booth with any other currency, for example with the one at the top of the currencies list.
Then in the Exchange Booth search box, type ELEMS

I think there is a difference when you use "exchange booth" directly or when you try to exchange your currencies using "offer".

lyaffe if you have time can you please explain us, it is a little confusing?

Thanks, now it's working fine, with 0.01 unitsPerMint, and finding some answers  :)

I will try now the submit = true

If you keep unitsPerMint=0.01  you will pay 1nxt fee per 0.01ELEMs that you mint. I think that ELEMS has the potential to maintain a high price, and when more people join and the difficulty will be higher and coin distribution wider , 0.01ELEMS will worth more than 1nxt but maybe you can try first to alter unitsPerMint between 1 and 0.5 (you will pay 1nxt for 0.5 ELEMS etc). At the end the community will drive the price and hopefully we will keep a big NXT/ELEMS ratio.

Klokan you are not so new to nxt. Your account has already 28.8 nxt. :)
I just sent you another 7nxt in order to start mint your first ELEMS :)

But I'm quite new to minting process (as we all are, I suppose) ;-). Many thanx for that 7NXT for minting, Mr. Elements ;-)

I find it difficult to mint using my CPU. The first coin was probably the easiest. The next consecutive coins are hard to mint. This is getting serious.  :-\

I don't undestand how to mine  ???

Part 1  - Prepare the Client

1. Download the latest client version from here: hxxps://nxtforum.org/nrs-releases/nrs-v1-4-7-1/    (sorry, still can't post links)
2. Unzip the folder
3. You need to download the blockchain.
4. Navigate to "nxt"  in your newly unzipp folder
5. Run run.bat (assuming that you have a windows system)
6. After that a new folder called "nxt_db" will appear.
7. If you have already the database somewhere else from a previous version of nxt , close the console window and copy/paste the files inside "nxt_db"

Part 2 - Create an account

If you don't have an account or you want to create a new one just for minting purposes:

1. Run again run.bat
2. Double click "NXT_Wallet" (internet shortcut)
2. Generate a new passphrase

Part 3 - Minting

1. Locate "nxt/conf" folder
2. You will find two files inside
3. Copy paste "nxt-default.properties" inside the folder and rename the new generated file "nxt.properties"
3. Open "default.properties" using a text editor like sublimetext or notepad++ (you can use notepad also but the result is going to be ugly)
4. Find and change the below parameters (at the end of the file)

nxt.mint.serverAddress=localhost
nxt.mint.currencyCode=ELEMS
nxt.mint.secretPhrase=your passphrase
nxt.mint.unitsPerMint=1

(this means, you will pay 1nxt fee for each ELEMS that you will mint, you can change this accordingly, however greater number increase the difficulty to mint a coin, smaller number decrease the difficulty but you will pay more fees, check "Additional Best practices" below)
nxt.mint.threadPoolSize=1
nxt.mint.initialNonce=0
nxt.mint.isSubmitted=true

5. Save the file
6. Go back in the "nxt" folder and run "mint.bat"
7. A new console window open, if everything is correct after the initialization you will see "Mint worker started"
8. Happy minting

Try and if you need extra help post here. :)

What elems is for (planned)?

First of all we are very lucky that nxt developers create MS and we have the chance to experiment with it. Our coin is secured with the Nxt blockchain and can be exchangeable with "exchange Booth", so we will put our time and effort to find use cases.

With no GPU and ASIC mining at the moment, our coin is a chance for new users and off-course existing ones to experiment with the minting procedure. The early adoption will be more fair like BTC or LTC some years ago. Fair and wider adoption is one aspect of a coin value. Another one is to find ways to spend the coins that you own. There are people willing to spend computer power to generate coins, we need to have also people willing to buy these coins because they are useful to them. The Elements team will introduce ways to spend ELEMS for useful products and services. Nxt will also profit for ELEMS utilization. All these features and more is our plans for the near future.

minted 3 ELEMS only for about 10hrs. Is that right? Maybe I have a slow computer

Imagine that there are only 114.3342 ELEMS minted at the moment. So you hold a little less than 3% of the distribution. Another problem is the bug in Scrypt algo that we cannot use all your threads of your processor. But at the same time it is up to us to keep the value of the coin high and coin 3 coins will store enough value for you in the near future. Also something else that can be useful is to make a list of processors and hash rates so anyone can have a comparison.

Someone for example just bought 1ELEMS for 350nxt. And this is only the start. :)

Keep the supply low and the value high

Doesn't work.

The Mint worker stops at "INFO: Mint worker" then nothing since then, it's been about 20 minutes.

My conf is the following :

Quote
#### MINT ####

# Address of the NXT server to which the mint worker submits its transactions (default: localhost)
nxt.mint.serverAddress=localhost

# Specify a mintable currency code
nxt.mint.currencyCode=ELEMS

# Secret phrase for the minting account, this secret phrase is sent to the host specified by
# nxt.mint.serverAddress therefore do not specify secret phrase of an account with lots of funds
nxt.mint.secretPhrase=my secret pass

# Number of units to mint per transaction
# The minting difficulty grows linearly with the number of units per mint
nxt.mint.unitsPerMint=1

# The initial nonce used for minting
# Set to 0 to start with a random nonce
nxt.mint.initialNonce=0

# Number of concurrency threads used for minting
# Set to 0 allocate one thread per processor core
nxt.mint.threadPoolSize=1

# When set to false mint transactions are not submitted when a hash is solved.
# Set this value to true to perform actual minting
nxt.mint.isSubmitted=true

Is there a problem with it ?

nah sometimes it just takes a long time to get anything. Even the notification to say at "pool-1-thread-1" takes a while to come out.

Ok, lets try to find the error. Open your mint.bat file you will see this:

java.exe -cp classes;lib\*;conf nxt.mint.MintWorker

change it to this and run it again:

Code: [Select]
@ECHO OFF
java.exe -cp classes;lib\*;conf nxt.mint.MintWorker
pause

If somethis is wrong the console window closes automatically. By adding a "pause" stays open. Can you please copy paste here the logs so we can find the error?

1. Download the latest client version from here: hxxps://nxtforum.org/nrs-releases/nrs-v1-4-7-1/    (sorry, still can't post links)
2. Unzip the folder
3. You need to download the blockchain.
4. Navigate to "nxt"  in your newly unzipp folder
5. Run run.bat (assuming that you have a windows system)
6. After that a new folder called "nxt_db" will appear.
7. If you have already the database somewhere else from a previous version of nxt , close the console window and copy/paste the files inside "nxt_db"

Part 2 - Create an account

If you don't have an account or you want to create a new one just for minting purposes:

1. Run again run.bat
2. Double click "NXT_Wallet" (internet shortcut)
2. Generate a new passphrase

Part 3 - Minting

1. Locate "nxt/conf" folder
2. You will find two files inside
3. Copy paste "nxt-default.properties" inside the folder and rename the new generated file "default.properties"
3. Open "default.properties" using a text editor like sublimetext or notepad++ (you can use notepad also but the result is going to be ugly)
4. Find and change the below parameters (at the end of the file)

nxt.mint.serverAddress=localhost
nxt.mint.currencyCode=ELEMS
nxt.mint.secretPhrase=your passphrase
nxt.mint.unitsPerMint=1

(this means, you will pay 1nxt fee for each ELEMS that you will mint, you can change this accordingly, however greater number increase the difficulty to mint a coin, smaller number decrease the difficulty but you will pay more fees, check "Additional Best practices" below)
nxt.mint.threadPoolSize=1
nxt.mint.initialNonce=0
nxt.mint.isSubmitted=true

5. Save the file
6. Go back in the "nxt" folder and run "mint.bat"
7. A new console window open, if everything is correct after the initialization you will see "Mint worker started"
8. Happy minting

Try and if you need extra help post here. :)

The Mint.bat file is not launching for me why?

6. Go back in the "nxt" folder and run "mint.bat"
7. A new console window open, if everything is correct after the initialization you will see "Mint worker started

I have no console window open

First i copied nxt.defaut.properties and paste
Rename the new file default.properties
Open it with Notepad++ delete the text and add this

nxt.mint.serverAddress=localhost
nxt.mint.currencyCode=ELEMS
nxt.mint.secretPhrase=my nxt passphrase
nxt.mint.unitsPerMint=1
nxt.mint.threadPoolSize=1
nxt.mint.initialNonce=0
nxt.mint.isSubmitted=true

Save and launch the Mint.bat nothing happen

Ok, lets try to find the error. Open your mint.bat file you will see this:
Code: [Select]
@ECHO OFF
java.exe -cp classes;lib\*;conf nxt.mint.MintWorker

change it to this and run it again:

Code: [Select]
@ECHO OFF
java.exe -cp classes;lib\*;conf nxt.mint.MintWorker
pause

If somethis is wrong the console window closes automatically. By adding a "pause" stays open. Can you please copy paste here the logs so we can find the error?

Assuming that you unzip the file that you download from the forum. Navigate here:  \nxt-client-1.4.7.1\nxt\conf and you need to have one file with this name: "nxt.properties"

Oups sorry! My mistake in the tutorial! not "default.properties" but "nxt.properties". I will change the guide. Sorry again. :(

A question
Can i forging nxt and mining elems at the same time?
Or i have more chance to mine block if i'm not forging?

I think there is no problem to do both at the same time. Can someone please confirm this to be 100% sure?

I don't think there is a problem. Only if your Effective balance becomes 0 as a result of a mint then that would cause you to lose ability to forge for the 1440 blocks or so.

I think there is no problem to do both at the same time. Can someone please confirm this to be 100% sure?

Confirmed, explanation:
Forging is a server side action, you tell your node to start forging and it will continue to forge as long as its running even if no client browser is attached.
Minting executed by the MintWorker is a client side utility. It queries your node for information and then tries to solve the hash without any interface with the server node. Only once a hash is solved it submits a single transaction to the server.
Therefore minting while forging is exactly the same as sending a payment while forging and of course its supported as long as you don't spend all your NXT as minting fees.

Thank you lyaffe for the explanation. Do you know also if the development team tries to resolve the threadpoolsize problem for the Scrypt algo?

Yes I know! Not the most friendly community... :)

Any publicity is good for the coin at this stage. We will try to use a lot of different source and ways to advertise the coin.

So interesting.. set my units to 4 and let it run.

Pushed hashes at an even 5 minutes, for 35 blocks but didnt report any full hashes.

I shut it down when i went to sleep. and this morning restarted mine.sh and my ELEMS balance in my account lept from 3 to 11.
Still no report of full hashes in the terminal.

For all MS currencies while miinting the passphrase of the minting account is sent to the host. It is strongly advised to mint from an account that has a low ballance of nxt.
I have one computer with by biggest account forging all the time. Is it safe to start minting from that account, but using the secret passphrase of another (minting) account in the minting preferences?

If I understand you correct you are forging with one account and minting with another account, both using the same NRS instance. That is perfectly fine.

Yes, I am logged in with my forging account. But I am using a secret passphrase from another account in the Minting preferences.

Do you have Java install in your computer. If not  download it from here:https://java.com/en/download/
If you already have java, then could be a wrong path?

mint.bat file has inside these commands:

Code: [Select]
@ECHO OFF
java.exe -cp classes;lib\*;conf nxt.mint.MintWorker

So I suppose something is wrong with java.exe. Either not install or not in the right path.

People should not using big accounts for forging, the passphrase of those accounts is written in plain text. So just use small accs for mining

Hi all,

I have create a guide about how to start minting MS coins. We want to make our announcement page more informative, so we think to add a FAQ and attach links to it. One of the links will be this guide. Please can you proof-check the guide because I am not native English speaker and my grammar is bad :)

The link here. Please if you don't understand something post your question here. Thank you.

Hi all,

I have create a guide about how to start minting MS coins. We want to make our announcement page more informative, so we think to add a FAQ and attach links to it. One of the links will be this guide. Please can you proof-check the guide because I am not native English speaker and my grammar is bad :)

Please if you don't understand something post your question here. Thank you.

Does anyone know why I don't see verbose logging in the terminal when I mint? (OS X Yosemite)

With every other coin, I see something like this when I begin minting --

INFO: pool-1-thread-3 computed 1 [MH]

With ELEMS, I only see

INFO: Mint worker started, and then eventually once I mint an ELEMS I'll see

FINE: pool-1-thread-2 found solution hash SCRYPT nonce etc etc

ELEMS is the only coin I've minted that does this.

Looks like some Java related phenomena like full GC taking place or git compiler kicking in.
There are tools to diagnose this if you are into it.

Definitely into it, Lyaffe, thanks! I'll give it a try simply for curiosity's sake (and maybe it's bug related?)

Yes, Scrypt is slow compared to other algorithms. I did some profiling and there is not much to improve, the code spends most if its time in the xorSalsa8 method which is already git compiled by Java. Garbage Collection activity is very low.
The only way to improve this would be to port the xorSalsa8 method to run on a GPU or Asic.

4. Find and change the below parameters (at the end of the file)

nxt.mint.serverAddress=localhost
nxt.mint.currencyCode=ELEMS
nxt.mint.secretPhrase=your passphrase
nxt.mint.unitsPerMint=1

(this means, you will pay 1nxt fee for each ELEMS that you will mint, you can change this accordingly, however greater number increase the difficulty to mint a coin, smaller number decrease the difficulty but you will pay more fees, check "Additional Best practices" below)
nxt.mint.threadPoolSize=1
nxt.mint.initialNonce=0
nxt.mint.isSubmitted=true

5. Save the file
6. Go back in the "nxt" folder and run "mint.bat"
7. A new console window open, if everything is correct after the initialization you will see "Mint worker started"
8. Happy minting

Try and if you need extra help post here. :)

Thanks for guide!! but my terminal returns unknow account error.

I have some problem.

You need to make an outgoing transaction to publish your public key to the network.

maybe that will fix. Try)

Maybe, you need to make at least one outgoing transaction (so that the info about this account is published in the blockchain)?

I tried. Dont work. My outgoing transaction have 11 confirmations. Maybe not enough confirmations?
What is your NXT account?

There is something wrong?
My system is Linux MINT MATE 64bit

Are you sure you have NXT on this account? (At least to me) nxtreporting.com says that it has 0 NXT.
Sorry, correction: my account is not the one shown.
I put the password in front of the = sign and leave no space.

Then that's strange. I think in this case you need help of someone more competent than myself.

No GPU, only CPU for now. Well, try to find a block of 5 EGOLD, for instance. It's not a good idea to mint too often, since you pay 1 NXT each time you find a block.

Thank you.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1_QdcrY1q6_n9J3NOcyoczGqELIeCy6S6zNG2Cj22bj8/edit?pli=1

The best dev is in this place!
Mint ELEMS !

Thank you for your kind words but I think the credit need to go to the real developers of Nxt. They put this idea into practice and now we all have the chance to implement our own crypto-currency. I am just the issuer. :) From my side I will try my best to bring new ideas and promoting the coin in order to bring value into ELEMS.

Do we have anything right now or in plans of how to do scrypt minting/mining?

I have been minting with my MacBookPro, works fine.

I also have a 1.3MH Scrypt Miner GawMiner Fury. Was thinking when and how will I be able to use it for minting?
Or may be if could also use my MacBookPro GPU too?

:)

I would eecommand not to gpu mine with a laptop, you will signicantly reduce the life span of the laptop. It simply do not worth it, imo.

You will have the chance to use a dedicated scrypt device in the future, but at the moment the minting is only CPU based.

Hi all!

The last few days our project is not moving forward quickly. In order to give an extra push we decide to start a competition about our logo. As mentioned before a logo is vital, all our future projects and promotional acts will be more professional having a logo . We officially start our competition today and we will accept entries until Wednesday 00:00 GMT+0. It is weekend and more people can spend some time to participate. The community will choose the logo (poll with all participants and voting) until Saturday 31st of January. We want to have a big participation so we will have multiple rewards:

1st - official ELEMS logo + 50 Elems
2nd - 30 Elems
3rd - 20 Elems

Please use your creativity and participate in our competition!

1st - official ELEMS logo + 50 Elems
2nd - 30 Elems
3rd - 20 Elems

You need to increase the reward with another 0 adding to it. 25-30 ELEMS are generated in few hours by an i7 computer. On top of that ELEMS trade price has gone down than before. like 0.98, 0.77 etc. Before I traded ELEMS for NXT on double and triple price. It's not so interesting anymore... any plan to make it interesting?

you don't need to have 1440 confirms to mint anything. You can mint once you have NXT in your account.

On my dashboard there's a red dot beside Not Forging and when I click on it it says on right corner:
Quote
Your effective balance is zero, you cannot forge. (Effective balance is your balance after 1440 block confirmations)

EDIT You're right I just found a block ;)

but it says amount 0+1 in red...

but I minted 10 units......I guess I can't mine before the 1440 blocks after all...

forging and minting are two different things.

forging is protecting the nxt network and may win the protection fee with your forge account. you can't profit here.

you need 1440 confirms before you can forge.

minting is exactly just mining MSCOINS inside of nxt.
you need 1 confirms to mint. and you can choose types of coins to mint/mine. each successful mint will cost 1nxt.

am I minting or forging ?

and look at this transaction ?? isn't this minting / minnig ?

Right now, based on the MintWorker.run lines that you shared, you are minting. That is, you are "mining" a PoW coin like Bitcoin from "within" the Nxt network.

Minting costs you Nxt, but only indirectly. You need to pay 1 NXT per transaction. If you set

nxt.mint.unitsPerMint=1

then you are creating one transaction for each unit of the currency that you mint. However if you set

nxt.mint.unitsPerMint=10

then you are creating one transaction for every 10 units of the currency that you mint. It is suggested that you set

nxt.mint.unitsPerMint=1

at the beginning so that you can see how efficient your computer is at minting. Adjust later.

Forging is something that you do to secure the network (as a good community member), and you set forging from the NRS (the client). Forging and minting are independent operations and will not interfere with or help one another. In a POS system like Nxt, forging does not generate new units of the currency, since they were all created by the genesis block. Instead, forging entitles the forger to collect the transactions fees from other users of the network on a per-block basis. Forging will not generate a lot of Nxt as income unless you are forging with an account of several hundred thousand NXT. Even then, it's no way to get rich.

nxt.mint.unitsPerMint=10

Thank You for your answer;

I set it like that...and hit 2 blocks of 10 units....marked in the NXT minting window..

however I got payed 0 + 1 (red)...1 NXT was removed from me/transaction

and the twice 10...I never got them...

why is that ?

similar transaction can be found there:

i'm just not autorised to post links...or h t t p s

in the bottom table is marked as type : Monetary System Currency Minting but the amount is 0 and fee is 1

Thank you for your feedback.The reward has been increased. A new thread is now dedicated for the logo competition to make it more visible (https://nxtforum.org/index.php?topic=7890.0). We have a lot of plans in our minds but we need first the logo for promotional reasons. Any ideas also are welcome!

I really don't understand about selling ELEMS for NXT, I found currently exchange ELEMS for NXT is around 0.05, so meaning 1 ELEMS for 0.05 NXT, am I right? Then why we set minting ELEMS with nxt.mint.unitsPerMint=1? I really confused, anyone can explain this to me? Thanks!

If you set to 10, you still lose based on the exchange of 0.05. It should be 20 to set off, more than 20 to make profit. But I see post somewhere that value set above 10 will be difficult to mint, am I right?

I'm thinking about this, the highest buy is set at 0.051 so you would need to mint 20 ELEMS to make 1.02 NXT so less the 1 NXT fee that would leave you with 0.02 NXT profit

Is that right ? or am I missing something, it's not really worth burning out your CPU for that is it ?

I had my comp mining this for the last 24 hours set on "nxt.mint.unitsPerMint=20" and I didn't get any ELEMS ?

Any advice would be most welcome

Thanks

Yes but that would have cost you 7 NXT mining at 10 and your 70 ELEMS arn't worth 7 NXT ?

mnporter2001 is right, you will not profit even if you set to 15, or maybe should say you rather loss some NXT, the only profit should set to 21 as the exchange rate now.

Setting the 'unit' to the lowest/break even number isn't a great strategy in my opinion. You will always only be on the cusp of breaking even and you have the risk of the exchange rate moving against you in the mean time.

Rather than doing 7 x 21 mints costing 7 Nxt in, say, 12 hours, plan for 3 x 50 mints or 2 x 75 mints or 1 x 150 mint. Each ELEM with then have a much lower cost in Nxt fees and you are more likely to be profitable if/when you resell. The electricity will be the same as you ran your rig for 12 hours in both instances.

TL:DR Consider how long your current minting session will be, then plan to mint 1-3 times in that period. It is the most efficient use of your Nxt transaction fees.

Maybe it's also interesting to understand that nobody really is there actively buying a coin that has no inherent value and mintin for the sole purpose of selling will destroy this coin very soon.

I think it's more economical to only mint this coin if you want to hold right now and not destroy the coin before it even started, think about it :)

I have to agree with this.

The NXT devs have worked real hard in creating this but for now there is not much demand for ELEMS or any MS coin in general because there is no use for it. Right now most people are probably minting this just to make some fast money rather than looking for a new currency to build up. Which in terms of money is barely anything since there is very little liquidity in the exchange. In the early days it was something new and interesting to at least test out but since then its slowed down.

MS currencies are secured by NXT so there is no use for securing by mining(in this case minting) like other PoW currencies. I feel that the only thing MS currencies have going for it atm is the fact when minting it gives NXT forging some value because of all the tx fees made.

Until demand and value can be made the sell pressure will continue since there is barely any buying pressure. Marketplaces, games, etc. have to be made to get any use out of any of these currencies where they can be exchanged with as little reliance on NXT being used.

A reason for minting has to develop so these currencies can gain real value to the average crypto user if not then MS currencies have very little chance of succeeding on its current path. In my opinion :)

I've just started to test out counterparty(was bored at school :p) and it feels just the same basically as MS Currrncies(at least so far) where it relies on BTC for fees and also piggybacks on the BTC blockchain to confirm transactions and such. Maybe I'm wrong ??? Maybe a new MS dev can create a new MS currency that one sends NXT to the genesis in return for MS currency... Lol

Tldr;;...feel that MS Currencies have no use for now even though devs put great work. Need new ideas to get use of Currencies if not doesn't look bright for future. MS Currencies feel like XCP in my view.

Typing on a phone is hell...

But yeah..

I agree it doesn't feel much different. Its features each coin gives which creates value.

What gen1 clones had is that most didnt rely on other currencies to make more of a gen1clone currency and a unique little wallet. (Maybe im outdated for current times...dont follow many other than NXT, BTC, and a few other '2nd-gens' now :P). Along with thing like being able to hard-fork and change its algorithm if I'm not mistaken... Also wish there was the 'staking' feature many of the clones have nowadays.(unless there is and I didn't notice).

I remember all them coins like FlappyCoin, Corgi, COINYE even DOGE when it came out during MEME hell.... I think what attracted many is the need to just set their miners to a coin and start mining away either solo or through a pool without needing to use another currency to do so; or it was in some way 'new' algorithm or new PoS+PoW currency that followed Peercoin. Which is why I feel MS Currencies are like XCP in a way.

I got in late to the game and first coin I mined was Protoshares. Didn't have a BTC to my name but a partial btc after mining a few days. Missed the original NXT investors list...if only I looked on bitcointalk forums rather than protoshares...(at least BCNext was nice enough to send my money back after sending and not reading a post that wasn't in the OP :P) but used what I had and bought what i could from the original investors at the time.

With MS Currencies you need some NXT to start minting anything.

Of course I'm probably wrong on many fronts haha. I'm in no way a dev or anything like that...

That's okay for minting. Just set up the nxt.properties file as previously described and start mint.sh

What about FuelCoin?
does it have any inherent value?

What about NXT or BTC, does it have any inherent value? :)

Truth is, value is created by trust into something, nothing more and nothing less. You can argue now that the inherent value of any PoW coin is the time and energy it took to mine the coin but if you are the only one mining it, there is your crypto clones, I don't think there is any exception to this, it's how all currencies and all money operate, including gold, silver, the dollar, a rare art painting, bread, flour and about every other commodity on the planet and the universe ;)

But that is just my take on it, everything is useful for one thing or the other, as long as there is someone or many that are in need of that thing. If nobody is in need, then there is no reason for it to be here in the first place. (Which is, in my honest opinion, what the problem of the entire Monetary System is, at least as long as it's not properly decentralized or pegged to smart enforcing contracts or rules that will yield me the inherent and intrinsic value of other commodities or coins that are currently being developed hopefully :))

Fuelcoin was having a LOT of tradevolumes, but it made no sense. then recently the true volumes showed, less than $1K per day. now the market is revaluing it:

28   FuelCoin FuelCoin   $ 881,282   $ 0.008795   100,206,032 FC2 **   $ 4,240   -42.21 %

There a lot of coins that are just promoted and never really used. BTC is used, NXT is used (around 5% of BTC by tx volumes), DOGE is used. So if an MS coin gets some good promotion and usage, it can also obtain value.

Yes, I wholeheartedly agree with this :)

I think BTC and NXT has the offering of me being in charge of my investment because of it's inherent decentralized nature. Everyone can stake, mine and run nodes to secure their own currency. With the Asset Exchange and all the MS coins, we are still stuck in 1.0 fiat land where I have to trust a single or multiple entities to not mess up the contract I put my trust into. Of course the degree of trust varies with the name you take assets from (for instance, trusting you more than not-as-recognized members) but in the end, it's still a trust-based system and this is not what Bitcoin or the entire ideology is built upon and never was so I think the first true 2.0 movement will be the decentralized smart enforcing contracts that will put NXT or another crypto that implements this into the light it truly deserves.

Looking at Bitshares, even there you have the same problems you have currently with the fiat currencies, you are buying and exchanging assets in a decentralized fashion but still have a rich elite that rules over the platform and makes a lot of money from it. If NXT would have the possibility to trade, for instance, silver and gold with a proofen reserve, it would already be 10 times more appealing to many than Bitshares currently are, imho. NXT has great potential in this matter as it doesn't delegate their shareholders and I for once, will go and stick with the platform that allows me to own real commodities in the real world with a proof-like system where I know my value is protected and cannot be abused, hopefully the course NXT and other 2.0 cryptos will take this year!

Even voluntary and beneficial projects that don't carry inherent value, like NSC or ELEMS, could enforce certain Kickstarter like milestones that reward participators with physical or digital goods after a certain contribution, percentually funded by their own donations, which would make assets like this much more interesting for the sake of being a good guy ;)

I agree. Mostly everyone thought DOGE (at least in the early days) was going to be rendered useless and it was a joke currency (I was there in the few days of mining it just for fun and my .1 btc invested ended up becoming around 2 btc a few months later :P). Yet, now it has high volume and a lot of trading volume even though its a supply that won't ever reach cap (unless I remember wrong)..

Right now the Monetary System just needs to find a boost in the right direction. Where a Currency will be able to hold its value and people will rather hodl their Currency than just mint and sell at the soonest moment.

I believe the one ScripterRon made supports scrypt.

Only crashes the GPUs.

I think there is only CPU for Scrypt so far :)

Okay, I'll continue working on that, then. I could do the GPU miner, but it's less fun.

I am sure the NXT Community will appreciate it a lot having your skills on board for this currency experiment!

Hope you are doing well and hello on the NXT Forums!  ;)

Well, the CPU implementation of scrypt can do with some major work, as long as there's no GPU miner.

Can the ELEMS be exchanged against NXT ? Also I don't understand the system of needing some NXT to mine ELEMS. Can you explain me ? If I could understand I could mine !

Registering your mined/minted ELEMS on the blockchain is a transaction and each transaction requires a fee to be paid (1 NXT) to prevent people spamming the blockchain and bloating it for free.

You can only swap/sell ELEMS for Nxt if there is buyer out there. So you should check how active the market is before you mine, if you are only looking to mine and dump. If you believe an MSCoin might have value in the future, for whatever reason, then you could just hold the MSCoin and wait until you are right.

I'm not part of those who mine and next sell it for some Bitcoins/USD. If I mine some ELEMS it's to keep ELEMS. But I don't like to mine something that has no value and cannot be exchanged for something that can be used to buy something.

If it were easy to tell if ELEMS will have any value in the future, then everyone would be here minting and filling their boots!  ;) That's the risk/reward each person has to do. You might mine and only ever have sunk costs to show for it/

As crypto is so unpredictable, I might aim to mine a small percentage of as many MScoins as I can when they are easy to get up to a pocket change cost limit for each ($5-10) not expecting to get anything back for a long time, perhaps never on most of them.

Then all you need is to be holding 0.01% of the one that pops to make your money back and some profit. All the better if you can mine one that your can sell to cover your costs on the others.

But this still might be too high risk for many.
