Monetization
August 08, 2015, 09:46:38 pm

[EDIT_March_2016]

It actually looks as if the world is not interested in this thing. So why spend any further time on it?
Still, this thread needs an update, because for now, I had chosen a different route to acquire currency.

Monetization

1 Below is one of the possible ideas ... create a kickstarter asset, to collect money for this.

2 For now, I have taken the second route, trying to sell the early version v2,
to test the market, and in order to finance further development.

3 Which are other ways? EU-funding, scholarships, a patron, whatever?

Open to ideas.

That current route 2 is stony, and lonely, and sad.

 ;)

[/EDIT_March_2016]

Please help me to design a new asset
that kickstarts my and team-work on a new tool:
AssetGraphs
I need to collect opinions, and think hard,
before I am issuing into the eternal blockchain.

  • Are you an experienced asset trader? What would you (not) buy?
  • Have you issued a successful asset yourself? What seems important?
  • Do you know of other assets which follow similar ideas?
  • Have you financed your own work this way?

and most importantly:
  • Would you buy this asset?
  • Then what is essential for you?

If you want to know why I am making such waves, please read the OP in thread 9741.

See my first thoughts below ...

The idea is easy to understand, but still not formulated in the most perfect way:

My initial ideas during the hackathon:
Quote
Welcome to ... the future.

I enjoyed the nxthacks weekend very much, but as you can imagine, I am very reluctant to completely open all the sourcecode. I need to finance myself, otherwise I cannot afford to stay in cryptocurrencies at all - So I definitely need to monetize my work (and if only to pay dividends to my shareholder, see below).

But ... I have an idea - I issue a new asset, with detailed conditions:

The goal is to convince me, to make all this open source. And I will, stepwise:
When the first level of sold assets is reached, I publish the API abstraction Python module.
When the 2nd level of sold assets is reached, I publish the whole data mashup & network generation module!
When a third level of sold assets is reached, I promise to have extended this to include many more options.
Of course, winning a possible nxthacks price would be counted in.

What do you think about this?

I want to hear your feedback first, any hint is welcome. Then I will soon issue that new asset. Good?

From the new "AssetGraphs.py is born" thread:
...
The near future
Monetization of my work is of paramount importance (or I must leave cryptos, and "sell myself to the machine" *g*).

I might issue a new asset  .... General idea: When that asset is fully sold, all source code is published, which then provides the groundwork to a platform for creating your own networks from blockchain data easily ...

The medium future
...

Criticism? How to put this better? What have I forgotten?

Any idea is welcome.

Thanks a million!

Ideas for asset issuance:

Code: [Select]

        quantity: 100
        digits: 4

The 100 assets are representing 100%.
When all 100 assets are sold, the whole sourcecode is published.

The brain is able to recognize 4 digits without counting:
77.8628
12.0010
99.3744

and 4 digits with the 100 would create 10000 * 100 = 1 mio pieces.

Constant price?
Rising price?
Quadratically rising price?

sum ( [1,4,9,16,25,36,49,64,81,100] ) = 385   # quadratically rising price
sum ( [0.6,6.4,12.1,17.8,23.5,29.2,34.9,40.7,46.4,52.1,57.8,63.5] ) = 385   # linearly rising price
sum ( [38.5,38.5,38.5,38.5,38.5,38.5,38.5,38.5,38.5,38.5] ) = 385   # constant price

Rising prices
  • encourage to buy early, to get a larger piece for a lower price
  • enable early buyers to later sell at profit, i.e. disturb the issuer's sale
That's why I also mention a decelerating rising curve - Sqrt:
sum ( [17.1,24.2,29.7,34.3,38.3,42.0,45.3,48.5,51.4,54.2] ) = 385   # sqrt rising price

But perhaps for the purpose of this asset, a constant price would be best?

... just ignore those price deliberations, they can also be thought about later.

Instead ... back to more essential questions:

What are aspects that need to go into the issuance DESCRIPTION ?

A while ago, I studied other people's asset descriptions a little bit.

But this one is different ...

and also ... even one step back from the final description ...

* what are necessary and
* what are sufficient
* building blocks
* of a well-designed
* crowdfunding asset
* to encourage me to open source my code?

Thankfully, in my twitter stream browsing, I came across these

2 very good articles about Funding Open Source (not FOSS but FOS, or FFOSS  ;) )

Flows of energy

More Money For Better Open-Source Software

http://marijnhaverbeke.nl/blog/sustainable-maintenance.html

NOAH KANTROWITZ
Funding FOSS

(2110 words, 12291 letters)

Both with an interestingly similar world length (5.73 and 5.83 letters per word)
;)

Licenses:
Why? --> Specify: In case of funding success, under which license will I then publish the source code?

MIT
MIT License
e.g.  Ruby on Rails, Node.js, jQuery, the X Window System, Psyco, PuTTY, Xterm, AngularJS, Beautiful Soup, py2exe

AGPL
GNU Affero General Public License, abbreviated as Affero GPL or AGPL,
e.g. Launchpad, Diaspora, MongoDB, POV-Ray, RStudio Server, Wikidot, Ghostscript

List of many FOSS licenses.

CC  ?
(examples from wikipedia list)

CC BY-SA 4.0 (Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International),
e.g. Wikipedia, Arduino, knol (mostly), OpenStreetMap (for certain content), Stack Overflow

CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 (Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International)
e.g. TED Talks videos, what else? (I found Zero-K, and Katawa Shoujo - but I mean ... more well known content)

License breakdown of the "882 million pieces of CC-licensed content on the web"
  CC0: 4%, CC BY: 19%, CC BY-SA: 33%, CC BY-ND: 2%
  CC BY-NC: 4%, CC BY-NC-SA: 16%, CC BY-NC-ND: 22%
bold: by me. Of the six CC licenses, those two appealed to me most, and now
I see they are the two most common choices. Sometimes I can be very normal, too ;-)

... most of my work is already under the

giveback license
*g*

Long ago, I already drafted my own license attempt
(tired of often being applauded, but seldom rewarded - in spite of the incredible accessibility of crypto tipping *sigh*):

giveback-license-v05.txt (18/July/2015, started ~ 17/March/2015)

It even found the first fan (of the license) who wants to fork it!
So the next version will probably include:
+ the licensing text itself is put under the giveback license
+ it includes the, and builds on top of the (...) license
(choose the best one, perhaps CC BY-SA ?)
= giveback license means to me:
do whatever you want to do with it, but remember to attribute it to me, and consider to send me something of value to reward me.

I like the suggestion with "setting up a monthly contribution":
Quote
If you are getting value out of Tern, especially if you are using it in a for-profit way, consider funding further development by setting up a monthly contribution. The maintainer (Marijn Haverbeke) is available for Tern-related consulting work. (http://ternjs.net/#support)

Good idea.

But that giveback license is just my desperate attempt to change the whole of our planetary society ... and not intended to be used for the asset & assetgraphs.py open source'ing.

So back to:

AGPL
CC BY-SA
CC BY-NC-ND

in danger of sprinting too fast now, but I want to put these somewhere:

Some centralized crowdfunding services
(mostly BSN 'before Satoshi Nakamoto')

* (370) kickstarter.com (links to google search "open source" on ks)
* (1,054) indiegogo (links to interesting (future-)FOSS project that already got quite some funding)
* (3,119) patreon.com (links to search "open source")
* (54,524) flattr.com (links to google search "open source" on f)
* (143,936) bountysource.com (links to my newest mini-project)
* (184,922) gratipay.com supports bitcoin (links to my new gratipay profile, also see my shiny new button)
* (205,592) startjoin.com powered by a bitcoin-clone (links to search "open source")
* (3,235,685) snowdrift.coop "Each month, I will donate 1ยข for every 10 others who join me!"
* (13,570,748) nxt-starter.com use your NXT to support the community.

(number=Alexa global popularity rank)

meta
* thorough analysis of 6 such sites - a whole book about crowdfunding FOSS
* list of other similar sites - 24 sites, with their fees & niches
* kickfailure.com - "Bringing you the funniest and the saddest Kickstarter projects ever."  ;D

May this help us. Somehow.
t'was quite a bit of work, this posting.
But I just love to do such research

Thanks a lot. Yes, I know there are tons of good resources on the web, and earlier in this thread, I had also mentioned some of them.
But when I read such short, and precise assessments of practitioners ... they are sometimes even more valuable than a perfect encyclopedic overview.
Anyways, thanks a lot. Appreciated.

And the EU R&I programme ... interesting, too. Thanks!
I have once heard that writing EU proposals take up so much time, that some institutions are actually forbidding their employees to apply for EU funds :-)
And hey - where in their whole list is "blockchain, cryptocurrencies, transparent finance"?
Not even anything on the ICT sub page.
Sleepy Europe  ;)
