Need a Good Client for Macbook
« on: June 26, 2015, 10:21:29 pm »

Hi all,
I'm going mad recently because nowadays I can't get any client to work at all.  I've enjoyed using NXT for years but suddenly I can't do anything!  I cannot just use the older version because that is already on a hard fork from the main NXT network.

I originally used a low spec notebook (OS: Windows) to run the official NRS client and it worked like a dream.  However, a few months ago a new version of the client came out and since that version I have not been able to run the client at all, even though I have been trying every new version since.  It seems to me like that certain version somehow required more resources and it had exceeded the specs of my little notebook.

My backup plan was to install the client on my Macbook Air.  However, I cannot find any stable clients for the OSX operating system of Macs!  I'm not interested in beta/test versions because I don't want to risk my NXT on an unproven client.  Can anyone point me to a proper NXT client for OSX (Macbooks)?  I need the actual link because I've been having a hard time searching for any at all.

So...I need either a lightweight Windows client (that will work on my very humble notebook) or a highly trusted client for Mac.  PPPLLLLEAAAAASSEE  HHHEEEEELLLLPPPP MMMMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

I run NXT on my MacBook, doing so right now. But it's not the "wallet" app, it's just NRS, launched from the command line and then accessed through Safari. If you can handle that, then I can help you set it up.

My number one ideal would be to get a client working on my windows notebook.  I am completely happy with using the command line NRS plus web browser, but where can I download that with the latest version of the NRS?  I need to be on the same fork as the latest monetary system, voting system, et cetera.

I also don't mind using the command line NRS on MacBook, but again where can I download the latest version of that?  Can you tell me the specific website?

Also, what happened to Offspring, that was good and it's disappearance is another reason I'm stuck!

The direct download link is:

https://bitbucket.org/JeanLucPicard/nxt/downloads/nxt-client-1.5.12.zip

There's a link to the page you want to read near the top of this page, where it says "Update to the latest" in blue ;)

I tried your suggestion with my humble Windows notebook.

When I try to run the 'nxt' Application executable my computer says:
"THIS APP CANT RUN ON YOUR PC, to find a version for your PC, check with the software publisher"

The 'Run' Windows batch file makes a window pop up and immediately disappear.  If I double-click on some other icons in there first and then the 'Run' batch file then it says the server started successfully and now its trying to download blocks, but also a lot of error messages filling the screen, lots of error messages about blacklisting and "your peer is blacklisted" and "disconnecting".

-------------

I also tried it on my MacBook and it won't run/recognise the files at all, it seems like they are for Windows.  When you are on the Jean-Luc bitbucket site, how are you able to find which downloads are for Windows and which are for MacBooks?

The direct link above will download a version that can run on a Mac, or a PC, provided it has the right version of Java installed. For the latest version of NXT, you want Java 8, which is not installed on a Mac by default. (I think they come with 6.)

You will want to install 8, and only then try to launch the NRS. The trick with the Java install is that you want to install the JDK on the Mac, not the JRE. The JRE download will install Java 8, but not configure things right so that you can use it easily. Install the JDK, and you'll be good to go.

Go here:

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk8-downloads-2133151.html

Agree to the license terms, and then download jdk-8u45-macosx-x64.dmg. Install that, then try running NXT again.

The latest 1.5.x versions have several problems when upgrading. :-[
1) You must be shure you have Java 8 and NXT is using it. 8)
2) Upgrading from 1.4.x versions needs reconfiguring the blockchain which needs some time (may be hours on slow machines), disk space (~4Gb) and RAM.  ::)
But you can download the new blockchain from http://www.peerexplorer.com/#myDownload  :D
3) On Windows machines the default location of blockchain is changed to Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\NXT\nxt_db  ;)

Many errors you see on log console like blacklisting and "your peer is blacklisted" and "disconnecting" are normal behavior, ignore them  :)

Its working now and on my humble little Windows laptop.   :D :D :D
The new NXT is very nice, too.
Thank you for all your help.

However, it does seem that the new downloadable client does not work on low-spec machines.  That is a problem.   :(
Also, normal people cannot be expected to have some funky JDK version of java, NXT must work on the mainstream java.   :(
Also, those weird error messages in the console have to be toned down so we know things are OK.   :(

There are clearly several issues that need to be attended to ASAP if we want normal people to ever use NXT.  Although NXT is brilliant, it creates far too many headaches for the average Joe.  The developers must realise that the network will never succeed unless they make it easy enough for my parents to use.

Great you got it working and thanks so far for the feedback. A lot of people are working to make it more "handy" and easier to access. Yet, most of them are not yet perfect but ongoing work and very important "good feedback" such as what you would like to see or want to have improved are important.

About the Java version, this change was urgent because Java itself does not support Java 7 anymore (which still is used on most machines). Therefore a change to Java 8 will need to be done on all machines anyway soon. I hope that Java pushes this quickly, so Users do not have problems with this in the future.

The lack of a simple Mac app is a problem, so I took the liberty of updating the old Nxt Wallet app to use the latest version of NXT. You can grab it here:

I will need this too, i have a home laptop which has mac on it, and would be easier to use NXT that way. I will install it soon and check it out.

Hi Wendy, there is now an experimental Mac installer provided with version 1.7.2e see https://bitbucket.org/JeanLucPicard/nxt/downloads/nxt-installer-1.7.2.dmg
Would you like to check it out ?

Wendy, please note that experimental release are on a fork by default as far as I know. They are not on the main Nxt network. So this 1.7.2 version is only for testing and not to be use with real NXT, unless Riker state otherwise.

Release 1.7.2e (now 1.7.3e as of an hour ago) is currently not on a fork on mainnet. It can be used side by side with 1.6.x and 1.5.x releases until block 621000 which is expected around January 21st, 2016.
After this block the new transaction types added in 1.7.x will become enabled, once such transaction is submitted it will be rejected by the 1.6.x nodes which will remain on their own obsolete fork.
The new features are already enabled on testnet, therefore the 1.7.x nodes are already on their own fork, furthermore even 1.7.3e will be on it's own fork on testnet.
