Title: Ability for Apps in Client
Post by: bitcoinpaul on April 25, 2014, 11:47:47 am
One of many similar quotes about additional apps in the client:
Now I thought about apps, I kind of like the idea. For example, we could have an app for James' multigateway (since I'm not sure it should be installed by default - it's not part of the core). The "app", once installed, can add a link to the sidebar menu and when clicked will show it's contents in a sandboxed iframe.

Apps were mentioned now a few times by different people in the community and I think we should talk about it more.

Let's discuss the possibility for developers to make add-ons for the client to enhance the experience with the core & to provide an interface/gateway for services on top of Nxt.

Add-ons are cool, because everyone can personalize his client by this. Everybody likes that!  ;D

I'm not talking so much about personalization, I'm talking about a smooth and simple way to integrate services on top of Nxt into the client or enhance the handling with Nxt core features.

Lets do it especially if wesley can expose some of this excellent javascript libraries for these add ons to use....

We need a name rather than plug-ins or add-ons - NXTlets (come on someone can do better :) )

Nxtras, I like that  ;D

Honestly, this would be awesome to be able to snap in new functionality.

Yes, basic idea would be to expose certain functions that the plugin can use, via messaging from iframe to main client.

Now hard part is, how to install these addons, user would have to manually place them in a folder somewhere I guess...

I guess we should be extreme cautious with installing third party add-ons if the development will reach this stage.

Apps on top of the client sounds great.
