So I deleted the blockchain and then waited for it to sync, for a while it said I had no NXT, now I have 25K in both displays. I tried to spend the NXT but the client hung. However I do seem to be able to forge as I have a forge time estimate. ???

That it says you have no NXT is normal. The blockchain is scanned by NXT from start (november 2013) to finish, just like a person would read a ledger, it's at the end of the ledger that the person knows what balance everyone has. When only the first days of the blockchain are scanned only those transactions/accounts etc.. are known by NXT (and thus Offspring) so it seems you have a balance of 0 at first.

When you say 25K in both displays, what do you mean? Do you have two instances of Offspring running? Or is that on two machines. Offspring should not allow you to open a second instance on the same computer.

As a last resort you might want to manually delete your blockchain. When going through the File menu in Offspring (Delete Blockchain) you basically do a *soft* reset (this deletes the records from the database). What you want is to have your database recreated (aka a *hard* reset).

If you go in your HOME/Offspring folder (not sure what HOME is in your case, i'm not familiar with Mac) then you can delete your "nxt_db" folder. Please watch out when doing this, you don't want to delete your wallet file which is in HOME/Offspring to.

It is all true and correct now but I will clarify what I meant by both balances in case anybody has a similar problem in the future.

The both balances I referred to were the account balance and the wallet total balance. I only had one account so the wallet balance should be the same as the account balance.   the problem can be seen in the screenshot in a previous post and below.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/gtdrtn8veqmwg6u/Screenshot%202014-05-06%2012.07.47.png

When I deleted the blockchain it zeroed as it should but when the blockchhain was fully synced I had the 25k balance again which I did not actually possess and could not spend. Sometime later, I don't know how long or what happened but somehow the balances have corrected themselves.

Sounds like a problem with the blockchain, getting hung or becoming corrupted etc.

In NRS, I assume Offpring is the same, you can watch your account balance change as the blockchain re-downloads. It starts at 0, then your first transfer in then it tracks your transactions in step with the blockchain download. You reverted back to a previous time by the look of it.  You can't make any transactions that won't get rejected unless your blockchain is up to date.

For future peace of mind, use http://nxtportal.org to check the balance of your account using your account number direct with the blockchain. Whatever that says is correct. If your Client disagrees, you most likely have a problem with your blockchain download.

Whatever that says is correct.

That sounds cool. With how many servers across the world is that NRS instance connected? How big is that server cluster. That must be some special setup there. Can you tell a little bit more about how you can be 100% sure that that node is not on a fork. Please don't spare the technical details I'm really interested.

You are right, I overstated this  ;D

I don't know the set up. When I have had a problem, this has reassured me that the transaction has gone through. On the odd occasion, I would post the blockheight details on the pub thread to see what others have got and that it matches. But how do you know they aren't on a fork, right?  :D

Lesson learned, I won't risk stepping on your toes again  ;D And I'm glad it all got sorted in the end.

Lol. Did it came out that way? I'm serious about it. I have been working on this and it really comes down to a network of nodes across the world that have direct connections to each other, that's the only way to detect forks. But then still you can't be 100% sure. Such a setup could do a lot more like DDOS detection and overall network monitoring. To bad you're not involved.

Yep, your post seemed to be dripping with disdain  :D "How dare this little worm wriggle into my thread and start advising people on what to do, what does he he know?!" sort of subtext  ;D Luckily, I don't take myself seriously enough on here to be hurt and beat a hasty retreat instead  ;D  ;D ;D

But I do know there is another project you would be interested in that aims to detect forks on the network called Nxt Health Monitor. It sounds very similiar to what you describe, have you come across it?

If not, it is part of Nodecoin and still in early development. You can find more here >>>> https://nxtforum.org/multigateway-jl777/nodecoin/ or PM jl777 for a detailed explanation and current progress  ;D

That makes me sad  :'( I don't think that way.

I did not come across it but after doing a search for NXT health monitor I did come across a couple of other interesting posts. Thanks for sharing!

Nice to hear it  ;D ;D ;D No harm, no foul.

If I have greased the wheels for getting the Health Monitor here sooner than it would have been then I have done my good deed for the day  :D

Offspring 0.4.3 release has been taken down. There is a bug in the parsing of Quant values. Fixing it now.

im also programming fork detection and block orphan detection into the whole thing {his forging pool}, so it should be 100% smooth automatic operation, none of this BS where exchanges temp "lose" your withdrawal and you have to contact them for resolution.  this happens because NXT does occasionally fork, and sometime it happens when people are requesting withdraw.

(Dutch)

The fix is here https://nextcoin.org/index.php/topic,4525.msg42204.html#msg42204

Quote
The problem

OS X Mountain Lion ( 10.8 ) has a new security feature called Gatekeeper. Gatekeeper is enabled by default and prevents applications distributed outside of the Mac App Store from launching.

Launching such application results in the error: "<Application> is damaged and can't be opened. You should move it to the Trash."

The workaround

  • Open Gatekeeper settings located in "System Preferences > Security & Privacy"
  • Set "Allow applications downloaded from:" to "Anywhere" and confirm by pressing "Allow From Anywhere"
  • Download, unpack and run the Offspring
  • Once an application is successfully launched, it no longer goes through Gatekeeper. Thus you can restore Gatekeeper settings to the default option "Mac App Store and identified developers" after successfully launching Offspring

When I install the new client, do I need to delete the old one first?

If I have Window 7 with 64 bit operation system, should I use the x86_64 version?

When I install the new client, do I need to delete the old one first?

Download the zip. Right click the zip, choose Extract Here. If you want to (not needed perse) you can delete the old release (C:/Users/Dirk/Downloads/OFFSPRING.0.4.2.WINDOWS.X86_64.zip and C:/Users/Dirk/Downloads/OFFSPRING.0.4.2.WINDOWS.X86_64/).

As an example.. Downloading the installer will give you this.

C:/Users/Dirk/Downloads/OFFSPRING.0.4.4.WINDOWS.X86_64.zip

Unzipping that... Will give you this folder.

C:/Users/Dirk/Downloads/OFFSPRING.0.4.4.WINDOWS.X86_64/

Now start by double clicking..

C:/Users/Dirk/Downloads/OFFSPRING.0.4.4.WINDOWS.X86_64/offspring.exe

Your blockchain and wallet file are in HOME/Offspring that's something like..

C:/Users/Dirk/OFFSPRING/

Thats called your settings folder and should never be deleted, each other version of Offspring will use that!

There is a bug in 0.4.4 where the total order price of ask and bid orders are displayed incorrectly. Working on a fix right now.
