Notice: 26 november 2014

Development of Offspring has stopped and it is unlikely that it will be picked up again.

Instead my focus has been on MofoWallet for the past few months now, MofoWallet offers a similar experience to Offspring but does so on a future proof framework.

MofoWallet is available as a cross platform download which you install on your computer and it's online version can be used straight from your browser.

Please check it out online at.

Discussion thread.

Offspring was a huge project, over 25,000 lines of code. If you think you can use it be my guest it's open source.
Contact me through PM if you have any questions.

OFFSPRING NXT CLIENT
OFFERED TO YOU BY DGEX.COM

Includes Windows Installer
Includes Update Center

Offspring is developed by Dirk (verymuchso on this forum) and is privately financed by Graviton the owner of the DGEX.com NXT exchange.

News

  • 14 may 2014 - Offspring 0.4.5 released.
  • 19 may 2014 - Offspring 0.4.6 released. Everyone should update.
      - Includes Upgrade Manager, no more manual downloads. Be notified of releases automatically
      - Embeds NXT 1.1.3
      - Several bugfixes, most notable; fix for AE buy/sell prices

Welcome

Offspring is NXT client software which looks and works much like Multibit or Electrum.

With Offspring you can...
  • Easily install/uninstall through our Windows installer
  • Be notified of updates and download them from within Offspring
  • Manage multiple NXT accounts from a single UI
  • Store your NXT keys in an encrypted wallet
  • Create new NXT accounts and add *read-only* observed accounts
  • Earn mining fees by forging blocks (you can mine with multiple accounts)
  • See exactly when one of your accounts will forge a block (through a countdown)
  • Send and receive NXT
  • View all your past transactions
  • Create or update your aliases
  • Issue assets on the asset exchange
  • Buy/Sell assets on the asset exchange
  • Manage your asset portfolio, see how much assets you own and what their current value is in BTC or EURO
  • Send and receive encrypted messages
  • Use it's live block explorer which lists all past blocks and transactions and allows you to lookup any block, transaction or account
  • Access the block explorer from every part of the application, you can for instance click on an account number in your transaction overview and it will open that account in the block explorer (same goes for all transactions and blocks)
  • See blocks and transactions coming in live
  • Get a live view of all connected peers, see how much you upload/download, you can even send them a message (if they are hallmarked)
  • Blacklist/unblacklist any peer you are connected with
  • See exactly how far the blockchain has downloaded (up to the second)
  • Delete and re-download the blockchain simply from the menu.
  • And much more ...

Easy Install (for windows users)

Windows users can use our easy all-in-one installer it will install Java (if you don't have it already) and Offspring. Simply download execute and follow the instructions..

Easy Update

Since version 0.4.6 Offspring stores it's update information in the blockchain and offers an intuitive download manager which notifies you about and downloads new releases of Offspring. The downloads are cryptographically verified by Offspring by each install file's SHA1 hash which is also stored in the blockchain.

Requirements

Offspring requires Java 7 (basically because NXT requires it which is embedded in Offspring).
If you are using the Installer Java 7 will be installed automatically.
For all other releases we advise you to go here to download and install Java for your platform.
https://www.java.com/en/download/

Installation

Windows users can follow the instructions in the installer.
For all other platforms:
  • Download the zip for your platform
  • Unzip the contents to some folder
  • In the folder you will find the offspring executable (double click and Offspring will start)

Please visit our Getting Started guide on the Github Wiki for more tips on using Offspring.
https://github.com/incentivetoken/offspring/wiki/1.-Getting-Started

Downloads

This section is updated for each new release. The downloads are hosted on Github. For Windows users we recommend the Installer.
Please see the WIKI for instructions on how to verify the SHA1 and MD5 hashes.

Cross Platform - Win|Mac|Linux

Offspring is cross platform and runs on all devices with a desktop (Windows, Mac, Linux). Under the hood Offspring uses Eclipse SWT technology which offers a truly native UI experience on all platforms (this means Offspring looks like a *normal* Windows app on Windows, a *normal* Mac app on Mac and a *normal* Gnome app on Linux).

Open Source

Offspring is open source and welcomes any one who wants to make Offspring even better.

https://github.com/incentivetoken/offspring

Community members working on Offspring so far ..
  • Dirk - Core client development
  • Graviton - Planning, design, testing
  • fanaticalfishing - User instruction WIKI

Donations

Donations are much appreciated

Bugs/Issues

Please report any bugs/issues/enhancement proposals at our Github page.

Screenshots

I took these screenshots on my Ubuntu machine, if you install this on Windows or Mac it will look different (it will look native).

Buy/Sell in the Asset Exchange(screenshot taken on ubuntu)

We hope you'll enjoy using NXT through Offspring.

Help wanted

Do you like Offspring, want to help out? Offspring has been made by me alone mostly. Which has been a lot of work. One can only do so much.
If you have Java or Eclipse skills and see ways in which Offspring can be made better, please do fork the code and improve on it and i'll be happy to integrate your improvements into Offspring.

I'm also very interested in usability tips/tricks. Offspring is so full of features that the task alone of fitting everything in one screen is daunting, add to that the fact that all the UI is hand coded (no Visual Studio drag and drop) and usability is the first victim.

https://dgex.com

DGEX is the first and largest cryptocurrency exchange serving the NXT community. We are also one of the largest Bitcoin exchanges in the world executing hundreds of BTC worth of trades every day. The large daily volume provides you the means to get the price you desire as soon as possible, with the slightest effort of placing a limit order or instant "quick buy" execution. Our afforable trading fees do not set you back, and instant withdrawals grant you full control of your funds at any time 24/7.

Where is wallet file saved?

Add a menu "item" called "back up wallet"  so the user doesn't have to find the file

Nevermind: found it. Yes please add "Backup Wallet File" in menu

Hi,

(1) I have just downloaded this client, and wanted to use my already NXT account that I have along with that pass phrase, is this possible?

(2) If, so can you tell me simple steps to achieve this?

(3) If, it is not, will you be adding that option feature in?

I really did not want to have to keep creating new accounts, but your client does look to have a lot of features with it that I think are going to be beneficial to the
community here:)

(4) Also, is it possible to install this onto another external hard drive, instead of placing it onto my main PC hard drive?

(5) How also can we change the wallet file name and have it in another location for extra security measures please?

Thanks and I hope you can help me to get these answers sorted so I can start forging with this client.

Where is wallet file saved?
Add a menu "item" called "back up wallet"  so the user doesn't have to find the file
Nevermind: found it. Yes please add "Backup Wallet File" in menu

You can choose where your wallet will be saved and where it is loaded from. All from the login dialog.
My idea was that if anyone would choose a random name in some random folder for their wallet file then malware would have a much harder time to find that file and send it to it's evil masters.

What you could do (for instance) is name your wallet "super-cute-kitten.jpg" and save that in your My Documents folder. Good luck finding that evil wallet stealing malware creator.  :P

What would you say "Backup Wallet File" should do?

(4) Also, is it possible to install this onto another external hard drive, instead of placing it onto my main PC hard drive?
(5) How also can we change the wallet file name and have it in another location for extra security measures please?

1. You can add existing accounts you own (you need the secret phrase for that), existing accounts you don't own (all you need is the account number) and create new accounts (click the button to have Offspring generate a new passphrase).

2. To add any account you should go to the Accounts section and click "Add NXT Account".

You should always name your account something. This name is used in Offspring only.

If you want to create a new account. Enter a name, click the Generate button a few times. On each click a new passphrase is generated and since your passphrase determines your account number Offspring shows that account number in the Account Number field. Now click OK and your account will be stored in your wallet.

If you want to add your existing account. Simply paste your passphrase in the passphrase text box and it will use that. Offspring will instantly show the account number for that passphrase and the balance for that account. All for your convenience.  ;D

Now the fun starts... You can also add accounts you don't own.

For this to work you must check the "Readonly account (without private key)" checkbox. Now the account number field becomes editable and you can enter any account number you want. These accounts will be stored in your wallet but do not allow you to forge or do any payments with them, for the rest they function like any other account.

And this is what you will see after adding that read only account.

4 and 5. See my previous post

LOL, I have a chihuahua.
Glad to help, you can concentrate on more difficult issues.

One suggestion. It would be nice if the client would check for new versions and prompt the user to upgrade.

One suggestion. It would be nice if the client would check for new versions and prompt the user to upgrade.

Yes that would be nice I guess and not that hard to do. I'll look into it when I have chance.

Initially I wanted to take that a step further. In the Offspring source code there is actually a (almost) fully functional Self Update mechanism (Offspring automatically downloads only those files that actually changed). Because of limited time and the fact that I'm alone I could not finish that.

WARNING.. TECHNICAL LINGO AHEAD..

For anyone who is interested to see how it works I pasted the relevant parts of the source code below. Eventually I want to turn that on and it would safe anyone the time of constantly checking the SHA1 or MD5 checksums of the new versions since the update mechanism does the verification itself. All files are signed with a X.509 certificate that Offspring is able to verify for each updated file.

Offspring's build system is able to sign (java jarsigner) all installation files with a X.509 certificate, then when Offspring does the auto-update it verifies that all installation files where in-fact signed with the correct certificate.

You can find the source code for that here:

Self Update UI plugin https://github.com/incentivetoken/offspring/tree/master/com.dgex.offspring.update
Self Update Unit Tests https://github.com/incentivetoken/offspring/tree/master/com.dgex.offspring.update.test
Script to generate the certificate https://github.com/incentivetoken/offspring/blob/master/com.dgex.offspring.master/create_certificate
The build script and jar signing code
https://github.com/incentivetoken/offspring/blob/master/com.dgex.offspring.master/build
https://github.com/incentivetoken/offspring/blob/master/com.dgex.offspring.product/pom.xml (it's in the commented out "maven-jar-signer" part)

I would love to hear what the community thinks of such a feature.

A mirror for Github? You are downloading from https://github.com/incentivetoken/offspring/releases ?
Sure you can put up a mirror. I just really doubt it's needed.

Lets hope Github is having a bad day. I rarely have had problems with their services.

Yes you can. You can also see the value (URI) that belongs to any other Alias and you can see all aliases each account has.
Simply enter the account number or click an account number and look in the Aliases tab.

In the Offspring Block Explorer you can also see what kind transactions are Alias transactions. That's a lot of fun.
Sometimes people are registering a whole bunch of aliases which you can easily see in the block explorer (Recent Transaction Tab) you can then click the account number for that transaction and instantly you'll see all aliases that account has registered. Some accounts have a lot of them.

When a user create a new account and save the wallet, will this user have to save the new account's pass phrase? But for the existing accounts, a user can choose not to save the pass phrase by select readable only, right?

If a user decide not to save any wallet, this user will just need to put something in the wallet pass phrase on the first page and click every time when using Offspring. This user can use add account to work on a specific account. Right?

I advise everyone to save his/her NXT secret passphrase(s) in a safe place. Your computer (with wallet file) could be stolen, crash or be pulled into a blackhole. Write your passphrases down and save them somewhere safe!

But for the existing accounts, a user can choose not to save the pass phrase by select readable only, right?

Correct. If you add a readonly account only the account number is stored in your wallet.

If a user decide not to save any wallet, this user will just need to put something in the wallet pass phrase on the first page and click every time when using Offspring. This user can use add account to work on a specific account. Right?

Yes. From Add Account you can add any account, no matter what wallet file you have opened currently.
Also, a user cannot decide not to safe the wallet. If you add an account or create a wallet it is saved automatically.

A few notes:
  • You can right click an account and remove the account from your wallet
  • If you want to do some investigating (looking into readonly accounts) from the Offspring login dialog you can click the "Select File" button and then you can select (or create) a file that will be your wallet file (this will not replace your existing wallet).
  • Saving your wallet is done very carefully by Offspring. Before your existing wallet is overwritten it first is makes a test wallet which is fully inspected for consistency, then a backup of your wallet is made, then that backup is inspected for consistency and only then is your actual wallet overwritten. Which is checked again. If at any step something goes wrong Offspring will have a backup of your wallet and present you with instructions on how to restore it.
  • You can also work-on/look-in accounts from the main menu. Go to Menu / Block Explorer / Lookup Account and enter the account number. It will open a window for that account with transactions/aliases/assets/blocks/messages etc.. for that acccount

For info everyone,

https://nxtforum.org/general-discussion/clients-and-nqt_block/

Clients that aren't ready for the move to nxtQaunts will need to be removed from all Nxt related websites. We don't want anyone going to Clients that can do nothing but fork  ;D

No, sorry. Offspring will never look like that. Just like Offspring can never be made to look like the (soon to be) standard client (which runs in a browser) the standard client can never be made to do the things that Offspring can. It's like comparing apples and oranges.

As I have said before Offspring is Open Source anyone who thinks they can contribute can do so, we're all for that. Any input is appreciated.

As a side note. Offspring does include the ability to be skinned with CSS files. Anyone who wants play with that can look here https://github.com/incentivetoken/offspring/blob/master/com.dgex.offspring.application/css/default.css I haven't had the time to focus on that.

OFFSPRING 0.4.2 EXPERIMENTAL

Since NQT (0.00000001) is not enabled until block 130000, you must select the test net from the login dialog if you want to see it in action

This release consists of several bug fixes and is the first Offspring version that supports the NQT (0.00000001 NXT) amount unit.

With this release Offspring becomes usable after block 130000 and will not cause you to be on a fork.

Since the move to NQT required changes in almost every file we consider this an experimental release. In a few days we will release a final release after this version has been tested.
Graviton said he'd offer an reward for any serious flaws you find in this version.

Notable changes..

  • Encrypted Messaging now uses AES 256 bit encryption (integrates the bouncycastle library)
  • Old encrypted messages that used the XOR can and will be supported (read only)
  • Messages use prefixes 'CRYPTED!' for XOR encrypted messages, 'AESCRYP!' for AES encrypted messages
  • Support for NQT throughout the entire application, including Asset Exchange, Payments, Block Explorer etc..

I am a little confused about a discrepancy in my wallet balances.  The client shows a total 25k NXT which is different to the account balance of 1000 NXT.

The blockchain reads 71k NXT in and 70K NXT out so all NXT are accounted for.
So how come the client total says 25k NXT?

I dont understand why this is ???
Any ideas?

hmm, no it changed, but this is even stranger. My client now says I have 25k and the account now also says I have 25k NXT but blockchain explorer says I have 1000 NXT which matches my transactions history http://87.230.14.1/nxt/nxt.cgi?action=3000&acc=2452925285407876477

Very strange indeed. I suggest you click "Delete Blockchain" from the File menu in Offspring.
This removes and then re-downloads the blockchain, all you need to do is wait for it to finish.

So I deleted the blockchain and then waited for it to sync, for a while it said I had no NXT, now I have 25K in both displays. I tried to spend the NXT but the client hung. However I do seem to be able to forge as I have a forge time estimate. ???

That it says you have no NXT is normal. The blockchain is scanned by NXT from start (november 2013) to finish, just like a person would read a ledger, it's at the end of the ledger that the person knows what balance everyone has. When only the first days of the blockchain are scanned only those transactions/accounts etc.. are known by NXT (and thus Offspring) so it seems you have a balance of 0 at first.

When you say 25K in both displays, what do you mean? Do you have two instances of Offspring running? Or is that on two machines. Offspring should not allow you to open a second instance on the same computer.

As a last resort you might want to manually delete your blockchain. When going through the File menu in Offspring (Delete Blockchain) you basically do a *soft* reset (this deletes the records from the database). What you want is to have your database recreated (aka a *hard* reset).

If you go in your HOME/Offspring folder (not sure what HOME is in your case, i'm not familiar with Mac) then you can delete your "nxt_db" folder. Please watch out when doing this, you don't want to delete your wallet file which is in HOME/Offspring to.

It is all true and correct now but I will clarify what I meant by both balances in case anybody has a similar problem in the future.

The both balances I referred to were the account balance and the wallet total balance. I only had one account so the wallet balance should be the same as the account balance.   the problem can be seen in the screenshot in a previous post and below.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/gtdrtn8veqmwg6u/Screenshot%202014-05-06%2012.07.47.png

When I deleted the blockchain it zeroed as it should but when the blockchhain was fully synced I had the 25k balance again which I did not actually possess and could not spend. Sometime later, I don't know how long or what happened but somehow the balances have corrected themselves.

Sounds like a problem with the blockchain, getting hung or becoming corrupted etc.

In NRS, I assume Offpring is the same, you can watch your account balance change as the blockchain re-downloads. It starts at 0, then your first transfer in then it tracks your transactions in step with the blockchain download. You reverted back to a previous time by the look of it.  You can't make any transactions that won't get rejected unless your blockchain is up to date.

For future peace of mind, use http://nxtportal.org to check the balance of your account using your account number direct with the blockchain. Whatever that says is correct. If your Client disagrees, you most likely have a problem with your blockchain download.

That sounds cool. With how many servers across the world is that NRS instance connected? How big is that server cluster. That must be some special setup there. Can you tell a little bit more about how you can be 100% sure that that node is not on a fork. Please don't spare the technical details I'm really interested.

You are right, I overstated this  ;D

I don't know the set up. When I have had a problem, this has reassured me that the transaction has gone through. On the odd occasion, I would post the blockheight details on the pub thread to see what others have got and that it matches. But how do you know they aren't on a fork, right?  :D

Lesson learned, I won't risk stepping on your toes again  ;D And I'm glad it all got sorted in the end.

Lol. Did it came out that way? I'm serious about it. I have been working on this and it really comes down to a network of nodes across the world that have direct connections to each other, that's the only way to detect forks. But then still you can't be 100% sure. Such a setup could do a lot more like DDOS detection and overall network monitoring. To bad you're not involved.

Yep, your post seemed to be dripping with disdain  :D "How dare this little worm wriggle into my thread and start advising people on what to do, what does he he know?!" sort of subtext  ;D Luckily, I don't take myself seriously enough on here to be hurt and beat a hasty retreat instead  ;D  ;D ;D

But I do know there is another project you would be interested in that aims to detect forks on the network called Nxt Health Monitor. It sounds very similiar to what you describe, have you come across it?

If not, it is part of Nodecoin and still in early development. You can find more here >>>> https://nxtforum.org/multigateway-jl777/nodecoin/ or PM jl777 for a detailed explanation and current progress  ;D

That makes me sad  :'( I don't think that way.

I did not come across it but after doing a search for NXT health monitor I did come across a couple of other interesting posts. Thanks for sharing!

I tried to install the client for the Mac, but when I start the app, I see a message which says the app is damaged and needs to be deleted.

Offspring 0.4.3 release has been taken down. There is a bug in the parsing of Quant values. Fixing it now.

"How dare this little worm wriggle into my thread and start advising people on what to do, what does he he know?!"

That makes me sad  :'( I don't think that way.

I did not come across it but after doing a search for NXT health monitor I did come across a couple of other interesting posts. Thanks for sharing!

FYI, ForkedChain is working on fork detection too. I don't know anything else  ;D

Quote
im also programming fork detection and block orphan detection into the whole thing {his forging pool}, so it should be 100% smooth automatic operation, none of this BS where exchanges temp "lose" your withdrawal and you have to contact them for resolution.  this happens because NXT does occasionally fork, and sometime it happens when people are requesting withdraw.

(Dutch)

The fix is here https://nextcoin.org/index.php/topic,4525.msg42204.html#msg42204

Quote
The problem

OS X Mountain Lion ( 10.8 ) has a new security feature called Gatekeeper. Gatekeeper is enabled by default and prevents applications distributed outside of the Mac App Store from launching.

Launching such application results in the error: "<Application> is damaged and can't be opened. You should move it to the Trash."

The workaround

  • Open Gatekeeper settings located in "System Preferences > Security & Privacy"
  • Set "Allow applications downloaded from:" to "Anywhere" and confirm by pressing "Allow From Anywhere"
  • Download, unpack and run the Offspring
  • Once an application is successfully launched, it no longer goes through Gatekeeper. Thus you can restore Gatekeeper settings to the default option "Mac App Store and identified developers" after successfully launching Offspring

When I install the new client, do I need to delete the old one first?

If I have Window 7 with 64 bit operation system, should I use the x86_64 version?

Download the zip. Right click the zip, choose Extract Here. If you want to (not needed perse) you can delete the old release (C:/Users/Dirk/Downloads/OFFSPRING.0.4.2.WINDOWS.X86_64.zip and C:/Users/Dirk/Downloads/OFFSPRING.0.4.2.WINDOWS.X86_64/).

As an example.. Downloading the installer will give you this.

C:/Users/Dirk/Downloads/OFFSPRING.0.4.4.WINDOWS.X86_64.zip

Unzipping that... Will give you this folder.

C:/Users/Dirk/Downloads/OFFSPRING.0.4.4.WINDOWS.X86_64/

Now start by double clicking..

C:/Users/Dirk/Downloads/OFFSPRING.0.4.4.WINDOWS.X86_64/offspring.exe

Your blockchain and wallet file are in HOME/Offspring that's something like..

C:/Users/Dirk/OFFSPRING/

Thats called your settings folder and should never be deleted, each other version of Offspring will use that!

There is a bug in 0.4.4 where the total order price of ask and bid orders are displayed incorrectly. Working on a fix right now.

What OS are you on, did you have a previous version installed? It's always a good idea to delete the blockchain files, that works miracles most of the time.
Otherwise look in HOME/Offspring/offspring.log.

I have the Windows XP. I deleted the previous client I stalled. Where is the blackchian file? On the log, the last line says Nxt init Start.

On XP the blockchain is at C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Offspring\nxt_db, you can safely delete that folder. A new blockchain will be downloaded.

>> Nxt init Start, seems like a problem with the blockchain.

Other important files on Windows XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Offspring\offspring.wallet (your wallet file)
C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Offspring\nxt.log (an extra NXT log)

OK. Understood, but in order to make Offspring better we really need people to use it or I will never be able to squeeze out all the bugs let alone improve on the usability. That's something community members need to do, Graviton and I can only use it so much. Not sure what operating system you're on but installation for Windows has become ridiculously easy with the new installer.
The next release contains a new feature which we call the Update Center, it will alert you about new releases and even downloads and verifies the releases for you.

Just saying, we could use you (or anyone) on board to help make Offspring (and thus NXT) better.

It's Offspring, (or bouncy castle  :D) just teasing you.

What you describe is in Offspring. We call it the Update Center.
It checks for new releases every 5 minutes or a user can access it through the menu.. File/Help/Update Center
It will download the update for you and then verify it's SHA1 checksum.

I have this problem.

My Os windows 8 x64.

The installer still requires that you Uninstall the previous version first. It's in Programs/DGEX/Offspring/Uninstall. Please try that before running the installer.

Cool I did not know that. Thanks for supplying the answer.

If the Offspring Installer does not work. Try running as administrator.

This is planned for the next Offspring release. Which is planned as soon as the next mayor NXT release is ready (current NXT version is 1.1.4)
@Daedelus thanks for alerting me!

No not yet. I've seen the update thanks.
I'm quite busy at the moment but will release a new version when I hopefully get a chance soon.

Thats because of the old 1.1.4 NXT version embedded in Offspring. The 1.1.6 version will solve this.
It's been too long already and I really want to make an update but my other work is piling every day.
I'll see if I can do an update hopefully soon.

I recently sent NXT from an online exchange to my Offspring client. If I check my account balance on NXT blockchain explorer, it shows the new correct balance, but my Offspring client still shows the old balance. Anyone had the same problem? Thanks!

Probably not updated for the fork. Use the official client for now.

I might take a look tomorrow, if there's no word that an update is being worked on.
Update is planned, but Dirk is very busy these times and it is not certain when the update can be large core update can be rolled in.

We should have some schedule within 24 hours. If you don't mind, you could have a look anyway as it would be of great help to have someone capable of working something for the java software. There is even the opportunity to earn some extra ;)

If Offspring lead dev sees this, please share status.

Good initiative! To get it working Offspring needs to be made compatible with RS accounts first. The rest is not much work.
Unfortunately not able to put a lot of time into Offspring at the moment. But I'm glad to help out where I can.

It is open source, so anybody could fork it and update the core.

Hi,

Did you have a chance to look at the source code? Do you need any help?
