Ora (original name Kora) was initially supposed to be a Qora clone for those who missed out on the IPO. The Kora community waited for Qora to go open source but it remained closed source for months while its market cap failed to grow. Because of this, the decision was made to create the coin on top of the NXT monetary system instead.

The description "ORA is to QORA as NEM is to NXT" is still somewhat correct. Both Ora and NEM began as projects to clone an older, more established coin. Both also changed their strategy mid-development and severed their ties to Qora and Nxt, respectively.

For those who are unaware of NEM's pathetic history, NEM is a total and complete joke because the founders (UtopianFuture & Co) decided to LIE to everyone and claim multiple stakes for themselves for free and then later charge others for a stake.  They did this all while promoting NEM as some type of egalitarian crypto.  It is patently absurd.  When I called UtopianFuture out on this, he and other NEMwits proceeded to take my stake away.  (BTW, I'm honest and only claimed ONE stake.)  Only when the publicity from doing so caused NEM a public relations nightmare did UtopianFuture give me back my stake.  I don't even want the stake anymore.  The whole debacle is pathetic.  Their PoI algo is fundamentally flawed too.  I seriously doubt anything ever becomes of NEM and to that I say, "Good Riddance!"
